Can kratom offer a safer path to pain relief? A recent study dives into real-world answers There’s some new research out in The Journal of Pain about how people are using kratom to manage chronic pain, and it really gives some good insights into why it might be a safer alternative to traditional meds. I was honored to be part of the very first NIDA-funded study on kratom back in 2022, which helped start this conversation about how kratom can affect pain and quality of life. This new peer-reviewed study, "Kratom (Mitragyna speciosa) Use for Self-Management of Pain: Insights from Cross-Sectional and Ecological Momentary Assessment Data," looks at real-world data on how people use kratom and how it relates to their pain levels. Here’s what stood out to me: • Lots of folks say kratom helps them manage their chronic pain. • The study tracks daily changes in pain and kratom use, showing how people adjust their doses based on how they feel. • It adds to the growing evidence that kratom could be a safer option compared to opioids. It’s published in a respected medical journal, which makes this an important step forward — and shows we need more research like this.
