The "modern" data stack isn't feeling so modern anymore. Cloud computing costs are rising globally, making it more expensive than ever to cover SaaS costs and really any cloud-based data pipeline. Meanwhile, the laptop on your desk can most-likely run circles around around your x-small warehouse in the cloud. Think of all the long-running dbt dev builds you've run in your career, and how much that probably cost in warehouse credits. Imagine if you could just run your dev builds on your laptop instead, for practically nothing? Tools like DuckDB with MotherDuck are making it easy to dynamically shift workloads between cloud and local. dltHub makes it easy to run ingestion code wherever you can run python. With tools like these, I believe we're moving towards a "more modern" data stack - one which can run the same workloads we're accustomed to from our favorite cloud providers, but utilizing local hardware and open-source tools to significantly drive down costs. Excellent discussion on intelligent systems. I'm almost sure that (human) intelligence didn’t evolve to generate the most probable sequence of strings. Some linguists focusing on language as a vehicle for intelligence might disagree. Intelligence evolved to help us survive and adapt to a very challenging environment. Today, #AI is trained on vast knowledge that captures a massive amount of semantic dimensions written and reflecting our existential reality.
