Ian Sephton liked thisIan Sephton liked thisWe unsell every CEO candidate we interview. This job is hard. Why do you actually want this? Not the polished answer. The real one. We hired a CEO who had a successful exit by any measure. Looked us dead in the face and said: "That was a failure." That's the energy we hire for at UP.Labs. If it doesn't physically hurt you when this company fails, you're not the right CEO for us. Some people think that's intrusive. But startups aren't safe.

Ian Sephton liked thisIan Sephton liked thisAmerican Public Transportation Association’s Capitol Hill visits were a great reminder of how important it is for our industry to tell its story. This week, we showed a united front between the public and private sides of transit—and that message matters. Public transportation is far more than buses and trains. It’s a massive economic ecosystem that drives jobs, fuels innovation, supports domestic manufacturing, and keeps communities moving. At Transit Marketing Group, we’re proud to support agencies with Buy America-compliant solutions that help deliver safer, smarter, and more reliable service. From industry-leading fire protection and multimodal bike solutions to passenger information systems, solar power and charging technologies, charge management, and environmentally responsible cleaning products, every solution plays a role in strengthening transit. These public-private partnerships are essential to the future of mobility, and this week was a great example of what we can accomplish when our industry speaks with one voice. Thank you to American Public Transportation Association and its staff for putting together such an impactful week. Proud to be part of an industry that keeps America moving forward. Ian Sephton liked thisIan Sephton liked thisI've spent the last decades helping organizations tell better stories. Newsflash - the best stories existed within the orgs all along, but they were buried. Invariably, the best stories are where the people inside come into contact with the people they serve. Nothing new here. What’s different now is our ability to access those buried stories. In many orgs, the stories are forgotten in old call transcripts, all-hands recordings, meeting notes nobody indexed. Real moments. Verified history. Claims no competitor could make — because they didn't live them. AI is not solving this. In fact, it’s making it worse. Now that everyone can produce polished, on-brand-ish content faster than ever, companies are just churning out more and more synthetic, generic, algorithmically pleasant sounding mediocrity. Everything sounds like everything else. So I built something based on a simple thesis: belief is won through the real, it’s not generated. The thing I built finds the stories your organization has already lived — and turns them into something you can actually use. This isn't a content tool. Content tools start with what you give them. This finds what you didn't know you had. I have a pilot already running inside one of my client’s orgs. I'm not raising (yet). I'm looking for the right people and right orgs to keep testing. Specifically: → Orgs with a real archive worth mining, a leader willing to define what the organization is not, and a mission worth proving with real stories. → Operators with deep networks inside nonprofits, foundations, universities, or hospital systems. → Technical co-founders in AI or enterprise data architecture → Strategic connectors who understand how mission-driven organizations buy Oh, and I should mention that your data stays exactly where it is. Nothing trains a model that isn’t yours. If this makes you lean forward, I'd love to talk. Most organizations have lived better stories than they tell. This is archaeology for those buried stories.

Ian Sephton liked thisThis is always such a great event. Westcliff University is the model for how to execute our inclusive sports days.Ian Sephton liked thisThere are days on the calendar you circle and this is always one of them. For the 5th time, Westcliff University teamed up with the Inclusive Sports Foundation to host Inclusive Sports Day, welcoming hundreds of student-athletes and local Orange County high school students with disabilities for a day built on connection, joy, and community. What stands out most isn’t just the games, it’s the relationships. Familiar faces finding each other again, new friendships forming in real time, and a reminder that sport has a unique way of bringing people together. From the first activity to the last dance, the energy never dips. And while our student-athletes come ready to give their time and support, they leave just as impacted by the experience. Moments like this are what it’s all about. #WestcliffUniversity #InclusiveSportsDay #Community #StudentAthletes #HigherEd

Ian Sephton liked thisIan Sephton liked thisOn May 15, legendary USC football coach Pete Carroll will return to Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum to deliver the commencement address for USC Marshall’s Class of 2026. Throughout his coaching career, Carroll has consistently practiced and preached his “Win Forever” philosophy, an approach that emphasizes competition and the pursuit of excellence in all facets of life. As Carroll looks forward to his remarks and reflects back on his career, it’s not the trophies or records that stand out. Most of all, he remembers the impact he tried to leave on his players and the entire Trojan Family. “I’m just going to coach [USC Marshall’s Class of 2026] up,” Carroll said. “I hope I make them understand how extraordinary they are one more time.” Read more: https://lnkd.in/giCrYKe9

Made me realize that there will be so many 1-50m signing bonuses made by AI native companies for single employees. Companies in the near future will be able to predict the future enterprise value creation of a single AI native contributor that has achieved mastery in a particular part of the run-time.

Our CTO, Erick Went, recently joined the "Innovation in the Inland Empire" panel to discuss the Southern California Aerospace and Defense Coalition at the War-fighting Innovation Summit. Alongside top industry voices, the conversation centered on a vital reality: We must move at the speed of the need. We believe technology without purpose is just a toy. To support the modern warfighter, we focus on: •Alignment Before Iteration: Engineering precision by aligning tech to mission requirements before the first prototype. •Operational Urgency: As Erick noted, "This is the fastest we’ve ever gone and the slowest we will ever go." •Our goal is to ensure that innovation isn't just fast but is actually applied. We bridge the gap between "interesting" tech and mission-ready capability, helping partnerships move with both intention and urgency. A huge thank you to Creative Defense Foundation and FedTech for hosting a stellar event and highlighting the incredible innovation happening across the Inland Empire and beyond.

🔋 South 8 Technologies Is Powering Up Exciting coverage last week from Eli Walsh at the San Diego Business Journal on South 8 Technologies and the momentum behind our LiGas® platform as we scale production, expand global partnerships, and accelerate commercialization across defense, aerospace, EVs, and beyond. A few highlights from the article: “The liquefied gas electrolyte technology fundamentally addresses the long-standing issues of battery performance degradation in extreme cold environments.” — Je Young Kim, CTO, LG Energy Solution “South 8 is in the process of expanding its production capacity from several hundred to roughly 150,000 battery cells annually in 2026.” “For a small company like us, defense is such a good place to start because there’s really strong need for our cold weather capability and our safety… you’ll see from us is capacity expansion and more and more customers using LiGas batteries next year.” — Rusty Heffner, VP of Strategy, South 8 Technologies The piece also spotlights several major partnerships — including CTNS, Galvion, and LG Energy Solution — that underscore the growing demand for safe, cold-temperature-capable energy storage. South 8 is proud to be scaling advanced battery technology right here in San Diego and enabling performance where traditional lithium-ion falls short.⚡ https://lnkd.in/gB7nvTap

COSMIC - The Consortium for Space Mobility and ISAM Capabilities

Close out AIAA SciTech Forum with COSMIC's executive director, Greg Richardson to discuss What is Preventing Space Mobility and Logistics from Taking Off? - Friday @ 9:50 a.m. ET in Bayhill 23. ISAM capabilities are not aligned with National Security priorities due to lack of compelling use cases and overarching architecture. Dynamic Space Operations operating concept implies need for in-space servicing but government has not established a clear path forward. Proliferation is unlikely to solve resilience problem, and some level of servicing may still be necessary. Industry needs guidance on responding to government needs. #AIAAScitech #SMLspace
