Some reflections in the midst of the 4th USMCA SME Dialog this week: 1. US protectionist actions and the focus on "reshoring" manufacturing to the US under the Trump administration are causing profound uncertainty and severely undermine USMCA's goal of fostering regional integration, threatening Mexico's export-led strategy. 2. Despite the manufacturing export boom under NAFTA/USMCA, Mexico has been caught in a trap of slow economic growth (less than 3% annually) and unequal wealth distribution, creating a dual economy with weak domestic production linkages. 3. Although Mexico has emerged as the largest exporter to the US, benefiting from the potential of nearshoring, this advantage is imperiled by the US reshoring focus and Mexico's own significant internal infrastructure deficiencies and institutional uncertainties. 4. The automotive sector remains a central point of contention, with the US seeking to intensify trade restrictions and curb the influence of Chinese EV manufacturing in Mexico, further complicating the stricter rules of origin already in place under USMCA. 5. For Mexico, the immediate priority in the USMCA review is to secure the removal of new US tariffs and establish a stable legal framework, but its long-term need is to adopt a new development-oriented industrial policy to strengthen domestic linkages and escape its dependence on the US market. #USMCA #SMEs #Nearshoring

I’m excited to be presenting at AIAA SciTech 2026 next week in Orlando. Our Eos Atomics team, in collaboration with Kevin Bowcutt and the University of Maryland, has been exploring direct fusion-to-air heat exchanger windows for hypersonic propulsion applications. This work tackles a demanding set of challenges - surviving extreme temperatures, radiation, and pressure differentials, while maintaining chemical compatibility in both oxygen and hydrogen-rich environments. One particularly compelling outcome of this study is the identification of novel hypersonic operating envelopes that appear well suited for direct fusion-driven propulsion. These occur at extreme altitudes (>130,000 ft), where dynamic pressure and thermal loads are significantly reduced - beyond the limits of conventional combustion, yet still firmly within the realm of sustained flight. We’re looking forward to sharing these results at SciTech and engaging in discussions on what this could mean for the future of high-altitude, high-speed flight. The termination of the MOU between GlobeAir and LILLIUM GmbH gave me the material for this article. It was a good attempt at combining crewed and uncrewed aviation in a business model in which traditional aircraft will do the long flights and eVTOLs would do the last mile. It failed because the powerplant of the Lillium aircraft was purely electric and the batteries involved required a ground infrastructure that does not exists. I like the Electra.aero proposal better, start with hybrid technology and see where it takes you in terms of revenue and ROI.
