Jack Derby posted thisNow just 4 weeks away from the final presentations when my 6 student teams present to the CEOs of their marketing project companies, who determine 40% of their team grade. Always wonderfully complex and exciting at this time of year. Been doing this for 20 years, and people often ask why I do this plus manage the consulting business. The tactical answer is that the objectives of our customers often merge with the opportunities of having very bright students provide develop detailed marketing plans. The more important emotional answer is that I have the privilege of working with extraordinary people like Kate who sent me this last week. This unexpected note took my breath away plus it reminded me of my own experience in the Peace Corps. This reinforces my strong belief that as professors one of our primary objectives needs to be as guides and mentors to our students. Hi Professor Derby, I hope you’re well! I’m reaching out to let you know that I officially swore in to become a Peace Corps volunteer in Nepal last week, and that I just moved to my permanent site yesterday! I’ve already had so many illuminating experiences in my three months of training here, and I’m so excited to spend the next two years learning about Nepal, the world, and myself. More importantly, I’m emailing to thank you. I still remember the exact tone of your voice on the phone one Saturday morning when you said, “I have two words for you: Do it.” That was the exact moment I decided to go through with the application process and to take the Peace Corps seriously as a part of my future, and now I feel like I am exactly where I need to be, doing exactly what I need to be doing. I wanted you to know how grateful I am for you— not only for that moment, but for all of the times beforehand that you established yourself to me as someone whose advice is worth listening to (even if that advice is to move to the other side of the planet by myself). Jack Derby liked thisJack Derby liked thisMEMO TO ALL DOCUSIGN SENDERS Minor request to every company, law firm, and service provider sending DocuSign requests: Step 1: Tell me who this is from and what it’s about. Because when I receive an email saying only: “Please review and execute” …from a sender I don’t recognize… I’m not clicking the link. That’s not corporate governance. That’s phishing training. Then comes Step 2. Once I finally determine the request is legitimate, I open a 97-page document written in a dialect best described as “defensive legal Esperanto,” and somehow I’m supposed to determine: what action is actually being requested, why it matters, and whether checking Box #1 versus Box #2 has trivial administrative impact… or materially changes my rights as an investor. As an investor in early-stage companies, I receive a lot of these. Most problems could be solved with a simple accompanying note (to be read BEFORE being asked to read/sign the document): what this is, why it’s being sent, what the key points are, and what the practical implications are. A little context dramatically increases the odds the document gets reviewed promptly — instead of sitting untouched while the recipient debates whether the email originated from opposing counsel or a teenager in Belarus.

I'm a firm believer that 'a well stated problem is already half-solved' and NYSERDA's comments about VPP readiness are perhaps the clearest articulation of a solution worthy of acceleration: "VPPs hold promise for reducing peak load on New York State’s grid by 2040, as they face relatively few technology, infrastructure, or supply chain readiness hurdles, feature short lead times, and are geographically unconstrained. However, several challenges must be addressed to realize their full potential. Customer participation is a key variable, highlighting the need for simplified enrollment processes, consumer education, and program designs that facilitate enrollment. Metering and telemetry infrastructure present a potential technical barrier. Current wholesale-grade systems are prohibitively expensive for smaller DERs, while less costly alternatives may lack the reliability or capabilities required for certain grid services. Internet-based communications and purpose-designed hardware for smaller loads show promise for reducing these costs. Communication protocol standardization across utilities and markets remains incomplete." Difficulty will be that the solutions are not purely technical, but a web of technical solutions and customer engagement. Ripe for entrepreneurship and ready to scale!
