Excellent insights from Andrew Petcash and the Profluence Sports team on the opportunity in youth sports. However, I want to highlight one thing. There was a recent report from the American Academy of Pediatrics, which cited approximately 70% of children quit organized sports by the age of 13 due to injury and burnout. The professionalization and intensification of youth sports with year-round training, specialization, and over-scheduling can significantly contribute to injuries, overtraining, and psychological burnout. The pressure on kids is growing as quickly as the money flowing into the segment. Private equity firms are launching funds focused on youth sports, fueling an industry now valued at $40 billion (arguably higher). For emerging brands, this presents a massive opportunity to bring operational efficiency, fan engagement, and technology to a fragmented landscape. One of the most critical areas for the future of these young athletes is supporting injury prevention and recovery, and it’s no surprise that we’re seeing such strong traction with young athletes. Sports can influence life-changing values in young people, including discipline, commitment, resilience, and physical and mental strength. However, if we want them to stay in the game, we must also protect their ability to enjoy it in the long term. Because in the end, it’s not just about building better athletes. Elite high school sports “is going to be one of the more valuable media rights [categories] and nationally monetized [broadcast] products in the next 10-20 years,” Michael Schreiber (founder and executive chairman, Playfly Sports) said. My PGA Golf Shows was a whirlwind of meetings and growing new friends and partners for FlingGolf by New Swarm, but I also spent a fair amount of time in the Racquet Sports section, watching and playing #pickleball, #padel and a brand new sport, #typti. I’m a junkie for “new” sports and how they are growing, both the casual player community side, but also the business side. Understanding the process for each one is helping our strategy for #FlingGolf and our next steps for World League FlingGolf. I spoke with anyone around the courts from product side like Franklin Sports and Selkirk Sport - We Are Pickleball to the organized competition and league side like Racquet Sports Professionals Association and Pro Padel League. Intrigued by Typti which was just launched and is played on #pickleball courts. All of these stem from tennis, but did you know that “lawn tennis” was actually an innovation derived from an ancient game (mostly France and England) called “Real , Royal or Court Tennis” which is still being played today? Which of these newer racket sports has the right recipe for long term success? Right now, I’d put some money on Padel although it’s barrier may be the expense of building the infrastructure. Typti is kind of genius in that it is able to be played on the seeming millions of pickleball courts that have been built over the last decade. And it doesn’t make any sound! Why not use existing infrastructure , like #snowboarding did on ski slopes? I like that model. That takes down a huge barrier for adoption. (Pickleball took decades before it caught fire at least partly because it needed its own courts to be built.) Momentous Sports's Marley Hughes latest newsletter examines the behavioral economic impact of cashless transactions at sports venues using AMB Sports and Entertainment as a case study. His primary insight is that fans "spent significantly more while reporting higher satisfaction levels" is particularly compelling for #sportsbiz leaders given there is usually an inverse correlation between increases in price and fan satisfaction. I highlighted a similar dynamic when examining the increase in Major League Baseball (MLB) attendance during the 2023 season by spotlighting cashless transactions as catalyst for league attendance growth in a JohnWallStreet column. https://lnkd.in/gVCP9akk
