John Brennan shared thisToday I’m excited to officially announce Holly Ventures I, a $33M fund designed to back #cybersecurity #founders at the earliest stages of ideation. This marks the culmination of a lot of hard work, a bunch of luck, and an endless well of support from those around me. I am so grateful to the countless number of people who’ve had my back as I’ve worked to get this off the ground, with a special thank you to my wife and children, who’ve afforded me the latitude to lay the foundation for Holly Ventures. It takes a village - and what I’ve learned over the past couple of years is that my village is larger and stronger than I ever realized. My only regret is that I can’t yet talk about the six amazing teams that comprise the Holly Ventures portfolio, as they all remain in stealth (though not for long!). I’ve been supporting founders in #identitysecurity / #PAM, #securitydatamanagement, #exposuremanagement / #CTEM, #endpointsecurity, #cyberresilience, and #networksecurity - and with a #seed #security environment teeming with talent, I expect that scope to expand quickly. John Brennan posted thisIt’s with mixed emotions – the most prevalent being gratitude – that today we are announcing that come September, I’ll be transitioning out of my current position as a Senior Partner at YL Ventures to an Advisory role. One post can’t begin to cover the appreciation and respect I have for my colleagues and friends across the YLV community, and so I won’t even attempt to do that all here (and we’ve got plenty of time for that in the coming months!) I can still remember first meeting Yoav Leitersdorf for lunch in the Presidio back in 2017 – a meal that would change the course of my career. At the time, I had never even been to Israel, a place that now feels like a second home, in large part thanks to the partnership and friendship of Ofer Schreiber, Sharon Seemann and so many other past and present colleagues in Tel Aviv. The genuine privilege it has been to learn from others in this position can’t be overstated. The generosity of the CISO community, fellow investors, and our amazing Founders is something that I don’t take for granted. I’m also so proud to have been a part of the growth of our U.S. team, and I’ll miss working every day with Michael Cortez, Kirk Manoogian, Kate Burkhardt, Frank Kim, Ryan Gurney, Andy Ellis, and Shiloh Shaeffer. The good news is that, as planned, they are already making me feel redundant 😊. As for what’s next – my focus right now is on working with everyone here to make sure that this transition goes smoothly (including advising here wherever I can be helpful beyond September), though I can’t imagine ever straying far from cybersecurity. For now, at least, I know that I’m well behind my quota for bedtimes and diaper changes with my eleven-month-old son – and so Flynn might be the big winner here in the short term. When I was young, my father would often say to me that no matter what happens, be sure to leave a place better than when you found it. YL Ventures was already pretty great when I got here, but I hope I’ve lived up to that mantra over the past six years.

The shift is away from collecting everything “just in case” and toward understanding what actually matters in real time, across identity, cloud, and application behavior. When you can see how access flows, how APIs interact, and how systems behave under normal conditions, anomalies stop being abstract alerts and start becoming understandable signals. That is where observability becomes powerful, not as a toolset, but as a way of thinking about risk. Because once you can understand behavior as it happens, you are no longer reacting to incidents after the fact, you are intervening while the system is still in motion. And that is the difference between monitoring infrastructure and actually managing risk.

And I want to talk about something that's gotten tangled up in culture wars when it deserves a much more honest conversation: return to office. I'm not pro-RTO because I think people are more productive in an office. I'm pro-RTO because we are wired to be with other people. We can argue the productivity data forever. But what we don't talk about enough is the mental health cost of sustained isolation — especially for those of us who are introverts. Here's the irony: introverts often need the office more than extroverts do. Not because we love small talk, but because without a structured reason to show up somewhere, we simply won't. And the slow withdrawal that follows is hard to see until you're already deep in it. I've heard from people who worked from home for two years and felt "fine" — until they didn't. We can't always see the forest for the trees when we're inside it. Yes, you might be on a Zoom call with colleagues who aren't in the same building — because your company is global. That part is real. But I'd bet most of you, when you walk into the office, find a cluster of people around you. Not your team. Not your department necessarily. Just... other humans. That matters more than we admit. Some people are built for full remote. I respect that. But "some people can" shouldn't become the default policy for everyone. This is one of the threads woven through a film I'm honored to be part of — Midnight in the War Room, premiering at Black Hat this August. Hackers and CISOs sat down to have some of the most candid conversations our industry has seen. I'm one of them. I think it's going to be worth watching — not just for the security content, but for what it reveals about the humans doing this work. To me, there was nothing more fulfilling than giving back to my alma mater, and nothing more intellectually stimulating than being an investor in this fast-changing world. I was lucky enough to have both for my first job. None of this would have been possible without my inspiring colleagues at OoI. Thank you to all of you, and a special shoutout to my incredible mentors who always encouraged and pushed me to grow: Anders Hall, CFA, Nichole Burnap, CFA, CPA, Roy Yum, Brandon Baker, CFA. I'm deeply grateful. As for what’s next, I'm moving to Boston to pursue my MBA at Harvard Business School and will spend most of the summer in Asia exploring its hardtech ecosystem. John Brennan liked thisJohn Brennan liked thisEvery SIEM vendor is shipping their own agents now. Microsoft, CrowdStrike, Elastic, Splunk. And every one of those agents is built to live inside its own vendor's platform, on data that's been ingested through that vendor's pipeline. Which means when you pick SIEM vendor's agents, you're also picking how your data gets handled and how the work gets done around it. You don't really get to buy the agents on their own. For builders that's the harder problem. The agents you build yourself, or any third-party agents you'd want to bring in, don't get the same access the vendor's own agent does. The vendor's agent has the inside lane. The vendor has every reason to keep it that way. The teams pushing furthest into agent work want the opposite. Data and agent decoupled, so they can swap one without losing the other. Room to bring in something new next year, when a better agent ships, without rebuilding the pipeline underneath. That kind of independence is really hard to get inside any one vendor's walls.

Just read a piece from the team at Camber Creek portfolio company Proof on the evolving state of authentication…and it hit home. For years I’ve been thinking “passwords are dead,” but also lamenting the difficulty navigating the labyrinthine world of advanced security. This blog lays out exactly what’s replacing passwords in a way that’s practical, not just theoretical. Five methods stood out: - App-based authenticators finally killing SMS (good riddance, SIM-swap nightmares) - Continuous authentication that watches behavior during the session (the “someone stole the cookie but can’t act like you” protection we’ve all been missing) - Adaptive authentication that doesn’t treat grandma on her usual iPad the same as a login from a Tor exit node in a new country - MFA done right (and then taken further with verified digital certificates) - Biometrics with actual liveness + document tying, so it’s not just “a face” but your verified face What really resonated was the reminder that the strongest systems aren’t about piling on more factors; they’re about using the right factor at the right moment. Risk-based, context-aware, and (crucially) user-respecting. I’m biased but Proof’s angle of anchoring everything to high-assurance digital certificates feels like the missing glue. It’s one thing to authenticate someone at login; it’s another to carry that verified identity forward through the entire session, signature, or transaction. This one is worth the read.
