I’ve been asking myself a tough question: 👉 Is it better to ship fast and get feedback quickly, or to slow down and refine until the design feels solid? I’ve done both. Shipping fast exposes friction early—but it also creates debt that teams have to pay back later. Slowing down produces more usable products—but it can feel like you’re holding the mission back. 👇👇👇👇 Here’s the principle I’ve landed on: Match the speed of design to the reversibility of the decision. 📌If the decision is reversible, ship fast. Learn, adapt, iterate. 📌If the decision is hard to reverse, slow down and get it right. Because at the end of the day, speed without usability is wasted. A fast but broken design costs more time, trust, and energy than taking an extra day to build it well. In high-stakes environments like defense, design isn’t just about moving fast—it’s about knowing when to move fast and when to hold the line.

Jeremiah M. Lewin liked thisJeremiah M. Lewin liked thisLast week I posted about building a team and finding the best designers. I was flooded by the outreach and interest. I'm glad that Anduril's mission and work is resonating, but I saw a few common mistakes that are costing people opportunities. Password-protected portfolios get you ignored. Unless your background is exceptional, hiring managers aren't going to ask for access. They'll just review the 50 other candidates who made it easy for them. Your work might be great. They'll never know. NDAs are real, but too many designers overuse passwords for work that isn't sensitive. Shooting your shot sounds good until you land the job. Requirements and expectations for a role are there to ensure candidates are successful. If you get hired for a role you're not ready for, you'll struggle to meet those expectations. That can hurt your career. Companies get flooded with applicants who don't match their needs. How you interact now is how I assume you'll work. Most people were great and respectful. But some were desperate, like using my personal contacts to "get noticed," demanding the team talk to them, or just plain rude. If you can't be professional before an interview, why would anyone think you'll change after you're hired? Don't sabotage yourself in the first message. I hope these observations help everyone currently hunting for their next dream team. The job market is hard enough right now, don't make it harder on yourself with avoidable mistakes.

Lewin liked thisAs a designer who doesn’t write production code, it’s honestly wild to see how tools like Claude Code + Figma Console MCP have changed what’s possible. What used to require engineering support - building internal tooling and plugins - is now something designers can prototype, ship, and iterate on themselves. I just shipped a Figma plugin that every design system team eventually needs: Design System Governance The real problem Design tokens only matter if they’re actually used. In large files, hardcoded values quietly creep in and manual audits simply don’t scale. What I built A plugin that automatically audits your Figma files and flags anything that should be tokenized. It detects: ✔️ Hardcoded fill & stroke colors ✔️ Hardcoded typography (font size, weight, line height) ✔️ Hardcoded spacing (padding, gap) ✔️ Hardcoded corner radius Key features: ✔️ Click a violation to jump straight to the exact layer ✔️ Filter by category (Colors, Typography, Spacing, Radius) ✔️ See the actual hardcoded values (e.g. #FF5733, 16px) ✔️ Fast scans (current page only for performance) ✔️ Total token usage at a glance Why this actually matters ✔️ Catch inconsistencies before they ship ✔️ Enforce real design system adoption ✔️ Identify components that need token migration ✔️ Maintain visual consistency at scale The work is still in progress, but this is just the start. The bigger takeaway for me isn’t just the plugin - it’s how AI + MCP has fundamentally lowered the barrier for designers to build real tooling. We’re no longer limited to specs and handoffs. We can now build the systems that enforce the system. Product Design fears change. Not incremental change. I mean real innovation — doing things differently, even if it ruffles feathers. For years, designers have built rigid systems, optimized for edge cases, and followed strict accessibility guidelines. That’s important. But in doing so, we've also created a safety net. A formula. A sameness. Look across SaaS products: dashboards blur together, interfaces are interchangeable. Integrations improve utility, but where’s the actual product innovation? Take Apple’s liquid glass interface. Many designers criticised it for accessibility concerns, valid ones. But with modern OS-level accessibility tools, is there also room to explore more expressive, emotional, even unexpected design? We’ve flattened everything. Colours, hierarchies, typography — in pursuit of standards. But maybe it’s time we give users more than usability. Maybe we give them wonder, too. As AI continues to homogenise design outputs, the real opportunity lies in pushing against the grain. Let’s make room for difference. — — — — — — Edited with AI

🔄 Reposting because this really resonated. At the start of a project, the energy is usually high — ideas flow, discussions are rich, and both sides are excited. But as deadlines approach, that spark can fade. The focus quietly shifts from creating something great to simply finishing and sending it off. That’s when designers risk slipping into “cursor-jockey mode.” The reminder here is powerful: great design needs collaboration, trust, and space for professional opinions. When both the client and designer play their parts fully, that’s when good work becomes truly great.

Figma Grid is here! (beta) It sounds great: organize, align, and place content into responsive layouts. But… It’s not really a full code like grid. It's more like a bento grid. 1. You can’t wrap items inside the grid. 2. No support for variables for gaps or sizes. 3. You can’t reuse column sizes as child sizes. 4. It is only responsive in one viewport at a time. So, if I want a 12-column grid on desktop and a 4-column one on mobile? Nope. If I want a 6-column child on desktop and full-width on mobile? Nope again. Config 2025 had a lot of cool stuff (Sites, Make, Draw with variables 😍), but GRID needs a lot more love. Please, Figma fix the grid. It could be amazing. 🙏

The biggest shift I have seen as a VP of Design isn't AI-generated wireframes or prototyping shortcuts. It is designers using AI to step directly into frontend coding. No more design QA. No more translating Figma into tickets. Designers polish the experience in the same medium the user actually sees and feels. This change transformed my team. Designers loved the autonomy. Engineers loved being free to work on complex backend code. Quality went up, and we shipped faster. The more I talk with design leaders, the clearer it is that this will not stay a niche skill. This is becoming part of how modern design teams work. I launched CraftAmplify to help designers build this skill properly. We focus on writing production-quality code rather than prototypes. The response has been incredible. Thank you to everyone who put in the work and started shipping real code. Watching designers push their first production PR has been the highlight of my year. Each cohort is capped at five designers to keep the experience hands-on. I checked this morning, and there is only one seat left for all of 2025, so I added new sessions for January and February 2026. “Design is dead” is the new “my nephew knows Photoshop” Every time tooling gets democratized, people confuse access with quality. All that’s really happening is more people can produce a screen now. Design was never about the artifact. It’s the information architecture, the systems thinking, the psychology of human behaviour. AI can produce a UI. It’s truly terrible at making good UI without significant human intervention. Vibes won’t replace people who deeply understand craft, which is essential now more than ever to stand out from the slop. The floor for what passes for design just dropped. Doesn’t mean the ceiling moved.

What does "Investing in Design" look like for companies? Large companies are Investing in design. Earlier stage companies are saying "Design matters to us". Where does that actually show up? There's a lot of layers this can permeate through. Some broad ways in no particular order; - Design in Leadership roles, working together to steer strategy and impact - Investment in Design resource, what's the head count? - Investment in Design Headcount in specialty areas, Motion, illustration, Brand, Writing, Dedicated Design Systems - Market salaries (don't have to over pay, but definitely don't be under-paying!) - % of Designers work time freed up for play and exploration - Offsites, work trips...bringing Designers together to inspire them and fuel their creative cups - Retention incentives, learning and development stipends, equipment etc etc. - Access to tooling resources (Want them to bolster their ai skills...get them access to ai tools!) What else you can add, I'm barely scratching the surface right? If a company is doing these things - great. Those are quality signals. If they're not, but they say they're "invested in design"... dig deeper and think twice.

Most designers think perfection is about pixels. It’s actually about time. Specifically, 3 seconds. ⏱️ If a user has to pause for more than 3 seconds to figure out your interface, the design has failed. We often confuse "beautiful" with "usable." But in the digital world, confusion is the ultimate conversion killer. Perfection isn't reached when there is nothing left to add. It is reached when there is zero cognitive load left to remove. The best interfaces don't make you think. They let you flow. Here is the 3-Second Test for your next project: 1. Show your screen to a stranger. 2. Don't explain anything. 3. Watch their eyes. If they hesitate, you still have work to do. Design is silent communication. Make sure yours isn't mumbling. Does your current project pass the 3-second test? The Future of High-Velocity Design Engineers are moving faster than ever. AI can spin up seven different prototypes before we’ve even finished a "Research Plan." If we stay stuck in 3-month linear loops, we become the bottleneck. I recently had a talk with my team on how we’re evolving. Our goal is to eliminate the translation layer between our design intent and the live code. This means: Redistributing our time: Less time pushing pixels, more time "jamming" in the live build. Vibe Coding: Using AI (Claude/Cursor) to build functional realities, not just "clickable" prototypes. Trust through Speed: Shipping Research Previews early to learn from real-world data. Loved this. Jenny's perspective on general trends in how design work is moving aligns fairly closely with my own experience and what I'm seeing. I loved that she called out that Figma is still valuable (and faster) for many design tasks than jumping straight into prototyping. Just like persistent chat and UIs won't completely go away, I don't see a "drawing" tool going away, even for designers comfortable with code and AI prototyping tools. (Side note: I've been using hand-drawn sketches to illustrate ideas, and it's worked surprisingly well.)
