Gerry Song posted thisAs I turn my #opentowork back on, I want to take a minute to look back on my time at Bowery Farming and all the incredible people I met and got to work with. Last Wednesday started off just like any other when Irving, our CEO, called together everyone at HQ and announced that the company was shutting down at the end of the week. I'd hardly been there for 5 months and was just starting to feel like I had a good groove going. Despite all the challenges, we were on the cusp of launching something game-changing. I truly believed we could solve any problem together, so I wasn't expecting this was how it would end. I’m sure I speak for others when I say, I joined Bowery not for the promise of success or stability, but for the mission of making fresh, delicious greens sustainable and accessible in a future confronted by climate change and farmland loss. It was a dream come true for me — where else could I work with such a cross-disciplinary group at the cutting edge of automation and agriculture, AND get free salad in the office?? I grew and learned so much, and want to especially thank my manager Zachary Tessler for his calming presence and technical mentorship, close collaborators James Ellis, Andrew Cunningham, Natalia Zappernick, Julie Broadus, Ashwin Rane, people that got me on my feet early on Lauren M. and Kyle Johnson, as well as Colin O'Neil and Aashika Jikaria who welcomed me into the policy and outreach side and Rodrigo Pereyra and his sci-fi team at Farm X, and so many others... I’m sad our time was cut short, but I can’t wait to see what you all do next! All that said, if anyone seeing this is looking for some amazing, brilliant yet down-to-earth, resilient and determined people across a whole host of disciplines, I personally vouch for anyone mentioned above and really anyone with the Bowery stamp on their resume!

Gerry Song liked thisGerry Song liked thisI’m honored to share that I’m joining Simon & Schuster as CEO. For more than a century, Simon & Schuster has helped authors bring stories and ideas that shape culture to readers around the world. Being entrusted with the stewardship of that mission is both humbling and exciting. My own love of books began in a small town where reading was my connection to the wider world. After graduating with an engineering-heavy education, I realized there were gaps in my humanities knowledge and started working through the “World’s 100 Greatest Books.” Great books can change a life. That was certainly true for me. Simon & Schuster imprints have introduced the world to extraordinary books, from The Great Gatsby to Stephen King, from Joy of Cooking to Chicka Chicka Boom Boom. These works have shaped conversations, sparked imaginations, and become part of the cultural fabric. What draws me most to this role is the opportunity to partner with authors and help their stories and ideas travel widely, across formats, markets, and generations. Great publishers exist to serve great authors. Publishing is entering another period of meaningful change as new technologies, formats, and global audiences expand how stories reach readers. My career in marketplaces and technology, including time at Amazon and Airbnb, reinforced how powerful it can be when great creators are paired with platforms that help their work travel further. Simon & Schuster begins its second century with an extraordinary foundation: world-class editors, talented teams, and authors whose ideas matter. Every employee is also an owner through our Simon Shares program - something I believe deeply in. Great innovations, and great companies, are the result of talented people thinking and acting like owners. My focus in the coming weeks will be simple: listen, learn, and spend time with colleagues, authors, agents, booksellers, and partners across the publishing ecosystem. The first century of Simon & Schuster was remarkable. The opportunity now is to approach the second with the same commitment as the founders, and the curiosity and energy of builders. And if you’re an author, reader, or bookseller, I’d love to hear what books have mattered most to you.

My back-of-the-napkin math says this would've taken me ~9 hrs assuming I had all the wire lengths in front of me (also assuming I didn't have a midlife crisis half way through). I think I'm in love with this machine... Jamie Niu Serota Podium Automation

And for folks who want to really want to dig into the data, the MTA's One-Year Evaluation Report is now out! Stephen Crim, Ian Hartz, John Collier, Minha Lee and Conor Farrell have put a truly impressive amount of work into this report, and I am excited for folks to get to read their hard work: https://lnkd.in/eKrNEu2X

Gerry Song reacted on thisGerry Song reacted on thisI am excited to announce my new role with Cloudflare, with the mission to Help Save the Internet. The methods that good and bad visitors use to interact with the internet have changed. At Cloudflare, we are building the next generation of technology to get ahead of this, shifting the conversation to verifying Visitor Integrity and Visitor Trust. Cloudflare is already a global leader in application security and bot detection & mitigation. But we see a fundamental gap with other solutions in the market: they have no system for Ground Truth, and they fail to address the core impact of "bots". We are solving for the end-to-end challenge of the internet's future problem. To help drive this evolution, I’m looking for a Senior Product Manager in London or Lisbon to own this new Adaptive Intelligence Platform and help shape the next generation of Security and Trust. I’m seeking someone with an adversarial mindset, who understands that traditional feedback loops are under attack, to help us define Ground Truth. Apply Here: https://lnkd.in/g-TWVsAf

Just-in-Time UI: At Aligned Labs we frequently share reports about the data collection, fine-tuning and eval work that we do with clients. They often need different views or refined analysis, which is why we built Whiz-bang Boom! Our new tool takes a CSV or JSON file and generates a shareable, interactive report. You can easily modify the report or focus the analysis with a simple prompt, and it creates a new revision. You can organize reports into spaces and customize those spaces with a simple prompt. Try it out. https://wizbangboom.com #businessIntelligence #AI

Today the Pulse team published a deep dive on why a single “accuracy” score doesn’t tell you if a document extraction system will survive in production. The goal here is to lay out an introductory but still rigorous evaluation methodology - we have an exciting open-source benchmark building on this research coming out very soon. Let’s do the math: take 1,000 pages, each with 200 data elements. A model that’s 98% “accurate” on paper still produces 4,000 incorrect values. Now make some of those: 1/ Broken reading order that scrambles multi-column layouts 2/ Tables with shifted columns or missing headers 3/ Cross-page context lost entirely That’s enough to silently corrupt an entire dataset without throwing a single error. We’ve processed hundreds of millions of pages and built a multi-axis evaluation framework to measure what actually matters: reading order validation, region-level ANLS, reading order accuracy, TEDS for table structure, and continuity checks across page boundaries. The result? Fewer silent data corruptions, more predictable performance, and pipelines that keep working on the next million documents you haven’t seen yet. Full technical write up in the comments!

Document-centric tasks sit at the core of many enterprise, business, and government workflows. Search is important, but the real challenge is going beyond retrieval, enabling systems to reason across documents, verify facts, and handle multi-step information tasks. Great to see a new model from Databricks moving in this direction. I expect we’ll see many more models, including open-weight ones, designed specifically for document-driven workflows, an area with huge potential across enterprise and government use cases.

This is why I love working at Databricks. Innovation here starts from first principles (and it’s never easy). Our product and R&D teams build “Useful AI” capabilities that enable organizations to generate real alpha, not just add to agentic hype. Add KARL to the list!

Join us next Wednesday (Aug 6) for a deep dive into Fenic, our PySpark-inspired DataFrame framework built for the age of AI. If you’ve ever duct-taped a pipeline for embeddings, RAG, or agent actions… this one’s for you. Whether you're building batch inference pipelines, moderating UGC, or labeling data at scale, Fenic is built for production-grade AI infra. We’ll be unpacking the “why now” behind DataFrame-native AI with myself and founding engineer Rohit Rastogi and the team at AI Makerspace, covering: -How Fenic handles both structured and unstructured data -What it means to have an “opinionated” DataFrame for LLM workflows -Governance, scale, and semantic operators We will show you why DataFrames are the secret weapon for AI! This looks useful for folks in research or scanning what's coming out on the frontier: Lumi from Google's PAIR research team, a tool for better understanding papers on arxiv. Reading smarter, not harder -- that tagline brings me back to Mortimer Adler's classic 'How to Read a Book'! From their GH repo: Lumi uses AI to help you quickly read and understand arXiv papers. Features include: ✏️ AI-augmented annotations - read summaries at multiple granularities 🔖 Smart highlights - highlight text + ask questions 🖼️ Figure explanations - ask Lumi about images in the paper Demo: https://lnkd.in/ex7erTBb GH repo: https://lnkd.in/emz_Ghcs Medium article: https://lnkd.in/enky8dKC GitHub discussions: https://lnkd.in/efAmiCcp

There’s a lot of momentum around agentic AI right now. 📌 In practice, many systems labeled “agents” are really workflow automation with LLMs and tool calling. That’s often the right solution - workflows are predictable, testable, and deliver value quickly. Problems show up when we deploy these systems expecting agent-level behavior. Workflows are optimized for correctness on known paths. Agents exist to recover when the path is wrong. If a system can’t recognize failure, update state, and re-plan its approach, autonomy won’t magically appear - no matter how many tools or prompt chains we add. I wrote a deeper breakdown (with diagrams + concrete examples) on Substack 👉 Curious how others are drawing this line in production systems.

LLMs are everywhere and I believe one of the biggest challenges right now is aligning them to real-world utility Some thoughts from recent work: - Fine-tuning is great, but prompt engineering still wins for many lightweight use cases. - Evaluating with user-facing metrics (not just accuracy or perplexity) changes how you build. - Bias & fairness issues pop up even with apparently clean data. If you’re working with LLMs, what evaluation metrics do you prioritize, and why?
