This week alone I’ve: Answered emails while making snacks Taken calls on mute while breaking up arguments Worked in 20-minute bursts between “mum, mum, mum” And that’s just before lunch. Don’t get me wrong. I love spending time with them. I really do. But it still doesn’t explain the maths. School finishes at 3. Work doesn’t. Then add: Easter holidays Inset days Half terms Don’t get me started on the summer holidays which for us is 9 weeks 😳 And suddenly the expectation is: Be fully present at work Be fully present at home With zero structure to support either. And people say: “Can’t you just plan ahead?” Plan what exactly? The £100+ day out? Childcare that barely exists? Or trying to do both and hoping nothing drops? Because that’s the reality. Spinning plates. Constantly behind. Feeling like you’re doing a bad job at everything. No one really says it. But the system doesn’t work. We’ve just normalised forcing ourselves to fit into it. Not the normal day-to-day kind, but the kind of work that tends to show up only after you’ve stepped away for a bit. I’ve gotten a lot of crap over the years for this: “Vacation is vacation. Work is work.” I understand the sentiment but I’ve come to think about it differently. Some of my best thinking doesn’t happen when I’m sitting at my desk grinding through meetings and emails. It happens when there’s finally enough space to think clearly: a long walk, an unexpected conversation, a quiet morning with no urgency attached to it. That’s usually when the real work shows up: - Clarity around a problem - A new idea - A realization about what actually matters - A solution that wasn’t obvious before As a CEO and business owner, I’ve realized that stepping away from the routine isn’t separate from the work. Sometimes it IS the work. Not because you’re constantly “on” but because space creates clarity and clarity changes everything.

In the Monday morning rush, I forgot lunch for the baby and had to run back to the daycare. In 2026? ➡️ No biggie, I work from home and daycare is a few blocks away. It took minutes to run back home. PRE-2020? ➡️ When my daycare was 45 minutes away from my office in A DIFFERENT STATE? Before “flexibility” was a thing? This would have wrecked my entire day… a TWO-HOUR issue for sure. Having children on both sides of the pandemic-working-parent-life-divide continues to be mind blowing for me. 📸 Throwback to the Before Times… how did we do this?!

Johanna Parker reacted on thisJohanna Parker reacted on thisIn 1978 I sat for a vocational aptitude battery, to help guide my career ambitions. The results were interesting. They said I would probably excel at all things political science (to nobody's surprise - ever), and that whatever I would do I should avoid information technology. I should have listened. After forty-six years in tech, forty of them as a tech seller, I have to admit I'm just not getting the hang of IT. Psyche! Seriously, I've had a good run but it's time to pass the torch. After an abbreviated six years working directly in IT, I transitioned to software and spent thirteen+ years in datacenter and infrastructure automation, eighteen+ years in business intelligence and analytics, and combined search and document database for a fantastic eight+ year run. A special shout out to my team at MongoDB, who gave me a tremendous send off last week, my last days in the workforce (never say never). This is about as lengthy and as flowery as my farewell will get, I'll save the rest for other writing/music/baking/who-knows-what projects I need to complete. I'll keep an eye on LinkedIn, all the best to my friends and colleagues. Go well.

They believe in you - loudly When doubt creeps in. When the new role feels heavy. They’re still in your corner. 6. They celebrate what they no longer control No silence. No bitterness. Just genuine pride. 7. They understand loyalty isn’t possession People aren’t owned. They’re developed. Trusted. Then set free. That’s why they're unforgettable. Not because they were nice. But because they didn’t need control to feel important. Titles end. Influence doesn’t. Most sales and revenue leaders experience process adoption as a discipline problem with the frontline team. When reps don’t follow the process, visibility breaks down. The default response is more reminders, tighter definitions, and more enforcement. Leadership spends more time repeating the same thing over and over again. Most of the time, the reps aren't outright resisting the administration or process. They're just focused on what is more productive. The process is secondary to revenue, so they treat it that way. When the organization treats process as "just do the administration," the process becomes an obstacle to overcome. It doesn't help the frontline team produce revenue, so it will always take a back seat. No matter how well intentioned it is.
