Meta is squeezing advertisers. On April 1st, Meta is moving larger advertisers off of credit cards and toward monthly invoicing, ushering a strategic shift for many ecommerce brands. Most of the conversation on this has been focused on the loss of credit card rewards. And that’s real. Brands spending $50K–$200K a month on ads can lose 1.5-3% cashback and reward points when payments shift off cards. Likewise, brands using credit cards with rolling net 30-60 terms will see cash flow disruption by losing this option to extend payment due dates.​​ This leads to the bigger question: how does monthly invoicing change financing for ecommerce companies? For years, brands used credit card billing cycles to smooth cash flow. Spend on ads today. Collect revenue next week. Pay off the card 25-55 days later. Monthly invoicing changes this dynamic. While it provides the same buffer as credit cards (typically the 30-day billing cycle followed by a short grace period), it will prevent you from charging multiple credit cards throughout the month or leveraging cards with rolling terms to give you more days of working capital. This creates a cash flow pinch and increased pressure to generate ROI sooner on ads in order to pay these bills. My First AI Post @2025 (and thank you to the Aperiam AI Fellows and to Dawn West and Alex Netelkos for making that happen!): If viewability was the training wheels of digital measurement, attention is the carbon-fiber racing bike we’ve just learned to ride. Erica kicked us off by pointing out the obvious: “viewable” doesn’t mean “seen,” and certainly doesn’t mean “engaged.” McKinsey’s neat formula — time × focus × intent — resonated as a starting point, but the real magic is in using that across channels and across the funnel. Why does this matter now? Because omni-channel is no longer a buzzword — it’s the messy, lived reality. CTV, digital out-of-home, mobile gaming, social feeds — each has wildly different engagement norms. An attention metric gives marketers and publishers a lingua franca, a Rosetta Stone to compare value and outcomes without pretending a click on a banner is the same as leaning into a big-screen spot. Publishers want credit for premium environments. Marketers want to normalize buys across hundreds of brands, countries, and media types. Attention-weighted CPMs (ACPMs) start to solve both. Even a global CPG can look across Meta, YouTube, stadium signage, and print — and make sense of it. Is it perfect? No. Is it better than a stack of inconsistent KPIs and gut feel? Absolutely. And yes, AI is in the wings — not as the protagonist, but as the stagehand making the hard stuff easier. It can normalize messy data, connect attention signals to outcomes, and embolden teams to try bolder experiments. Which brings us to the closing provocation: What if a few brave brands and publishers agreed to really transact on attention — rough edges, no gaming, shared responsibility for outcomes? The moment feels right to test whether attention can become not just a metric, but a currency. Perplexity’s decision to STOP testing advertising is more than a revenue story I think... It's a positioning statement. (https://lnkd.in/eYNGPXEG) According to recent reports like Search Engine Land, Perplexity recently chose to move away from ads out of concern that even clearly labeled sponsorships could erode user trust. In a market where AI tools are becoming the front door to information, that concern is not trivial. I've always felt that when answers are generated rather than linked, the line between relevance and revenue can blur quickly. Time and time again we've all watched what happens when platforms scale through advertising... The model works and it funds growth, but it also shifts incentives. Then the product slowly optimizes for impressions rather than integrity. Finally, over time, users feel that shift, even if they can't articulate it. In my opinion, this is a long game for them. They may be sacrificing short term monetization, but in return they will strengthen brand equity in a category where neutrality is everything. What do you think?
