There’s a quiet issue in the VO world that newer talent rarely see coming: Demo producers recycling word-for-word audition scripts from real brands, slapping a 2+ minute mix on top, and calling it a “broadcast-ready commercial reel.” It might sound impressive. It isn’t. Those scripts are almost always client or agency IP, shared for audition purposes—not as a grab-bag for paid student demos. And in 2025, most major agents want commercial demos around :60–1:15, with short, sharp cuts that show your range quickly. When you see: RED FLAGS 1️⃣ Uses word-for-word audition scripts from real brands 2️⃣ Demo runs 2+ minutes as your main commercial reel 3️⃣ Multiple full :30 spots crammed into one demo 4️⃣ Producer talks more about their “sick production” than your marketability 5️⃣ No conversation about IP, usage, or how agents actually listen …it’s time to pause before you hand over your money. Look instead for: BEST PRACTICES 1️⃣ Original or heavily adapted copy tailored to you 2️⃣ Tight demo length: roughly :60–1:15 for commercial 3️⃣ Short, varied cuts that show your range quickly 4️⃣ Production that supports your performance instead of overshadowing it 5️⃣ Clear respect for client/agency IP and current industry standards Your demo is your calling card, not a producer’s playground. What makes a great livestream producer? Working with Meg McCauley from Homemade on a cooking show for PBS helped me understand what many other crews are missing. The producer role is often vague. On productions that consistently deliver great content, I've noticed the work splits into three distinct areas of focus. ➤ Logistics & Resources: Scheduling, staffing, sourcing crew, coordinating guests. Making sure the right people are in the right place at the right time. This is what most people picture when they hear "producer." ➤ Content: Working directly with talent to develop talking points, structure the narrative, and make sure key messages get communicated. ➤ Domain Expertise: This is the one most productions miss entirely. But not Homemade. On the PBS show with Meg, I watched culinary producers spend hours in the kitchen before every shoot. Testing dishes, coaching chefs on timing, preparing swap-outs for anything that takes too long to finish live. By the time cameras roll, the chef can focus entirely on performing. The path has been cleared for them. All the steps have been tested. Gaming livestreams accomplish this by bringing in someone whose entire job is knowing the game well enough to advise on how to avoid bugs and which areas will make for good content. On the Magic: The Gathering broadcasts I work on, gameplay experts sit alongside the production team specifically to flag when something significant is happening. Many livestreams fall flat because they handle logistics and content, but leave the domain expertise to whoever's on camera. A good producer either develops enough domain knowledge to be genuinely helpful, or brings in the right people to support the production team. Different producers. Different roles. Different jobs. Let’s dig deeper into what that really means—because it can definitely be confusing. Here are some producer titles to help give you clarity for your future project needs: - Executive Producer – The big-picture leader, overseeing financing, strategy, and vision. Might be juggling multiple projects at once. - Supervising Producer – Oversees the creative and budget, supervises other producers, ensuring consistency across episodes or projects. - Line Producer – Tracks budgets, schedules, and daily logistics on track. - Coordinating Producer – Manages, plans, and executes a production from concept to completion, ensuring projects align with creative vision and deadlines, and often serves as a liaison for different teams and departments involved in a project - Segment Producer – Owns specific pieces of content (perfect for talk shows, episodics, or news). - Associate Producer (AP) – Provides vital support with research, logistics, and coordination. - Field Producer – Runs the show on location, managing crews, interviews, and shoots. - Writer/Story Producer – Shapes the narrative, crafting arcs from raw footage, research, or interviews. Work to ensure handoff from field to post production team goes smoothly These roles can vary from project to project depending on the framework of the job. But if you’re hiring from outside the industry, it’s easy to see “Producer” as one job. The truth? Knowing which producer you actually need will save you time, money, and frustration—and help you build the right team to bring your project to life.
