"𝗧𝗲𝗰𝗵 𝗱𝗼𝗲𝘀𝗻’𝘁 𝗰𝗵𝗮𝗻𝗴𝗲 𝗼𝗿𝗴𝗮𝗻𝗶𝘇𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀, 𝗲𝗺𝗽𝗼𝘄𝗲𝗿𝗲𝗱 𝗽𝗲𝗼𝗽𝗹𝗲 𝗱𝗼." That was my opening line at the @DTLWomen’s Lunch Series: Empowering the Modern Workplace with AI at the Ion District Houston and it sparked some honest conversations about what AI is, what it isn’t, and why getting it right takes an entire organization, not just a few data scientists. 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝟯 𝗸𝗲𝘆 𝗹𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗼𝗻𝘀 𝗳𝗿𝗼𝗺 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘀𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻:  1. 𝗗𝗮𝘁𝗮 𝗶𝘀 𝗸𝗲𝘆: AI is only as good as the data that fuels it.  2. 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗰𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗲𝘀 𝗺𝗮𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗿: Streamlined workflows can make or break AI’s impact.  3. 𝗣𝗲𝗼𝗽𝗹𝗲 𝗺𝗮𝗸𝗲 𝗶𝘁 𝗵𝗮𝗽𝗽𝗲𝗻: From leaders to teams, everyone’s got to be all-in to get it right. As a Londoner still navigating my way around Houston (it’s no small city!), this was my first-ever AI talk and to say I was nervous is an understatement! But the warmth, curiosity, and energy in the room made it feel like home. We laughed, connected, and left inspired. I had a great time at the CO2 Pipeline Summit earlier this week. The conference was a great opportunity to gauge where the growing CCS industry sees opportunities and obstacles. Below are a few of my personal takeaways from the conference: 1.     The CCS market is long-term bullish, short-term cool. The global demand to manage and ultimately reduce GHG emissions isn’t going to disappear. Policy decisions will continue to cycle, driving ramps up and down in CCS investment. Ultimately, growth in the Variable Carbon Market and increased stability in carbon credit valuation will help drive us toward more investment in carbon capture technology and services. 2.     Mixed signals on policy are a major factor in CCS project uncertainty. Regulations carry pro’s and con’s. When designed thoughtfully, they balance the need to enable economic growth with mitigation of the associated risks. Right now, the US federal government is slow-walking regulations and thereby driving states to take matters into their own hands. The downside is policy fragmentation between states which challenges the economics of CCS projects. Permitting, eminent domain rulings, design requirements, and indications of future rulemaking vary state to state. While we may rarely get full consensus around what regulation should be, it’s a lot easier to make a project decision when we know what the rules are. 3.     Repurposing natural gas pipelines could be a viable CCS entry point for the right developer and right project. Putting new steel in the ground is costly and disruptive, but we’ll need to prepare tens of thousands of additional miles of pipeline “highways” to move CO2 from source to sink if we want to reach lower emissions goals quickly and safely. Repurposing inactive natural gas pipelines might offer a low-cost entry point to CCS for the right project with minimal infrastructure buildout. Developers still need to carefully consider the complexities of materials selection and operability when retrofitting NG pipe, but these types of networks, especially when they can operate as aggregation systems, offer an alternative to new construction. 4.     We need to serve and educate our communities. Misinformation can act much like a wildfire – it travels quickly and can be hard to contain. Education is the best “flame retardant.” Pipeline operators owe it to the communities where they operate to work with first responders, landowners, and the public and provide awareness of the operations taking place in their community. Education, listening, and acting with intent can abate a lot of concerns. Talking down and blank checks aren’t the best answer. One other theme that resonated is the clear advantages that ExxonMobil has in CCS: market position, technology, process, and perhaps most importantly, our people. There’s a lot of work to do, and I’m proud to work for an operator that sets the standard. I’m looking forward to future conferences and seeing what’s next in CCS!

Can Oklahoma Become a National Leader in Technology & Innovation? According to the American Tech Association's 2025 Tech Market Outlook report—Oklahoma City is the 19th most up-and-coming tech market in North America, supported by a workforce of 22,590 tech employees and a thriving ecosystem producing over 1,000 tech graduates annually. The Oklahoma State Chamber recently launched the Oklahoma Technology Alliance, an initiative uniting companies to drive technological advancements and attract tech startups. This alliance is set to foster a vibrant tech ecosystem, creating an environment where innovation can thrive and contribute to Oklahoma’s growing reputation as a hub for tech development. - In October 2023, Tulsa received a "Tech Hub" designation from the U.S. Department of Commerce’s Economic Development Administration (EDA), recognizing its potential in autonomous technologies such as drones. This designation, led by Tulsa Innovation Labs, was followed by a $51 million federal investment announced in July 2024. - Oklahoma City’s tech sector saw over 120 startups launch in 2023, contributing $4.2 billion to GDP, with a 25% increase in tech jobs since 2020. - Infrastructure enhancements, such as the Oklahoma City Innovation District’s $71 million MAPS 4 investment (approved in 2019, with developments continuing into 2023-2025), have expanded facilities like the Tom Love Innovation Hub and University Research Park, providing resources for startups and research.
