But the new group exhibition Rumble Above the Clouds is adding to the city’s noise in a positive way. Presented by the art collective Openings NY, which explores the connections between creativity and spirituality, the show aims to shake things up with its challenging painting, sculpture, photography, video, and site-specific installations. Artists showing off their work amid the altars and pews of the beautiful Church of St. Paul the Apostle include Emily Adams, Lauren Gohara, Meg Graham, Joey Kilrain, Keena Gonzalez, and the Voice’s own Araceli Cruz. Be sure to come out for the opening-night party on September 29, where you can munch on tasty hors d’oeuvres and sip wine—how often do you get to do that in church? Opening night party is at 7 on September 29.

    Village Voice

Do you ever have those dreams in which you’re giving a speech and suddenly you realize you have no clothes on? Exposing too much of yourself can be scary, but that’s exactly what the provocative art collective Openings aims to do in their new group show Naked Measures. We don’t mean to say there will be tons of nudity—rather, this show is all about uncovering the “elusive mystery of spirit, body, and soul” through personal works of photography, painting, drawing, sculpture, and mixed media…

Last year, when we attended the Figment Festival via a free ferry from Battery Park to Governors Island, we unknowingly entered a dream world of tent villages, mini-golf courses, games of tug-and-war, and revelers dancing. And this year’s festival, a forum for the creation and display of participatory and interactive art by emerging artists across disciplines, promises to be even more exciting. We can’t wait to check out the TypewriterGirls’ poetry cabaret, artist Joey Kilrain’s painted socks…

And this year’s festival, a forum for the creation and display of participatory and interactive art by emerging artists across disciplines, promises to be even more exciting. We can’t wait to check out the TypewriterGirls’ poetry cabaret, artist Joey Kilrain’s painted socks, a bevy of belly dancers, and a new mini-golf course featuring a hole inspired by The Wizard of Oz. Toto, we’re not in New York anymore.

The 15 artists of Openings, whose mission it is to look at the connection between creativity and spirituality, each give their unique take on the theme through paintings, drawings, mixed media, installations, sculptures, and photography. From Tom Bovo’s colorful city-inspired pieces to the twisted paintings of former Catholic school boy Joey Kilrain, to the dazzling personal collage work and photographs by the Voice’s own Araceli Cruz, there’s not an ugly piece in the bunch. Opening party from 7 to 9 on October 1.
