🚀 Mastering Memory Management in Java Using Java Mission Control (JMC) & Flight Recorder (JFR) By Syed Shahul Hameed — Edited by Ravindra K Memory-related issues like OutOfMemoryError, memory leaks, and inefficient GC are common in Java applications — especially under production load. Fortunately, tools like Java Flight Recorder (JFR) and Java Mission Control (JMC) offer deep JVM visibility with low overhead. ⚠️ Common Memory Issues OutOfMemoryError: Java heap space OutOfMemoryError: GC overhead limit exceeded Memory leaks from ThreadLocal, caches, or session retention High GC frequency Finalizer/Reference queue misuse 🛠️ JFR & JMC Overview Tool Purpose JFR Always-on, low-overhead diagnostics built into JVM (Java 11+). JMC GUI for analyzing JFR recordings — memory, GC, threads, allocations. They allow inspection of heap, GC, threads, class loading, locks, and application events. 📘 Real-World Debug: Spring Boot Memory Leak Problem: Java 17 microservice crashed intermittently with OutOfMemoryError. Steps Taken: Enabled JFR in production: -XX:+FlightRecorder -XX:StartFlightRecording=duration=1h,filename=recording.jfr Analyzed recording in JMC: Allocation trends Dominator tree Live set size Findings: Guava Cache had no expireAfterWrite. HTTP sessions weren’t cleaned up. Fix: Added cache eviction policy. Invalidated stale sessions. Outcome: Memory stabilized, GC overhead dropped 60%, errors resolved. ✅ Best Practices Enable JFR in staging/production: -XX:+UnlockCommercialFeatures -XX:+FlightRecorder -XX:StartFlightRecording=duration=30m,filename=recording.jfr Set JVM flags wisely: -Xms2g -Xmx2g -XX:+UseG1GC -XX:MaxMetaspaceSize=512m Log GC activity: -Xlog:gc*,gc+heap=debug:file=gc.log Use heap dumps with: jcmd <pid> GC.heap_dump /tmp/heapdump.hprof Analyze allocations in JMC: Allocation Flame Graph Object Statistics Capture dumps on OOM: -XX:+HeapDumpOnOutOfMemoryError 🔧 Extra Tools Eclipse MAT LeakCanary (Android) YourKit, Plumbr VisualVM 📌 Summary JFR + JMC are essential for diagnosing Java memory issues quickly and accurately.
