I walk into messy situations with a dangerous assumption: Someone can fix this. And sometimes… I quietly assume that someone might be me. For a long time, I thought that was just initiative. Work ethic. Maybe even leadership. But the older I get, the more I realize it’s also a form of privilege. Not the kind we usually talk about. Not money. Not title. Not access. Upbringing. I was raised in an environment where problems were considered solvable. Where adults didn’t wait for permission to improve things. Where curiosity wasn’t seen as overstepping. So when I see a broken process at work, my instinct isn’t “Who am I to touch this?” It’s “Why hasn’t this been fixed yet?” And then, almost without thinking… I start. That assumption has served me well. It’s helped me build things, untangle complexity, say the quiet part out loud. But it also made me realize something important: Not everyone was taught they’re allowed to engage. Some people were taught to stay small. To wait. To be grateful just to be included. For them, stepping forward doesn’t feel natural. It feels risky. That’s why I’ve come to think of audacity differently. Healthy audacity isn’t loud. It doesn’t need to dominate the room. It asks one simple question: Will this help? Not: Will this make me look important. And the more responsibility I carry, the more I feel the obligation to use that assumption carefully. To open doors wider. To name invisible rules. To remind people around me that initiative isn’t a personality trait reserved for a few… it’s something that can be invited. Because the real power of believing you can isn’t just solving problems. It’s making it safer for others to believe they can too.
