I've been on the frontlines of some of publishing's biggest transformations, including print to digital. What we're experiencing now with AI reminds me of when we first moved to the web, except this time the stakes and opportunities are even greater. I just wrote a piece for The Scholarly Kitchen sharing three concrete things that publishers can do right now to unlock more value in this AI era:  💡globalizing portfolios,  💡modernizing technology infrastructure,   💡and shaping how AI is used rather than being shaped by it.    Why these three things and why now? Research output globally is growing at an unprecedented pace, and new research powerhouses are emerging. Publishing technology has the chance to leapfrog forward. And with 62% of researchers now using AI for research tasks (up from 45% just last year), we have both the tools and the market conditions to drive meaningful change. Publishers have a big role in shaping how AI learns from, applies, and distributes trusted knowledge. That means licensing content responsibly, setting clear ethical standards for its use, and building open technical frameworks that connect high-quality research to the tools people rely on.  That's also why we launched the AI Gateway, an open platform that connects peer-reviewed research directly to AI tools such as Claude and Perplexity, with partners like Sage and the American Society for Microbiology already on board.  The technology and the research ecosystem might look different than they did 3 decades ago, but the question for publishers is the same: will we move decisively enough to lead? A devastating (if unsurprising) piece in The Atlantic on how AI Overview searches are quickly bringing about "the end of publishing as we know it," and no one feels fine. One leading publisher is preparing for "Google Zero," while another predicts that AI search won't put publishers out of business in 3-5 years but more like "next Tuesday." For some, the loss of search traffic is already leading to layoffs and other cost-cutting measures. What's depressing is that amid all the hand-wringing there is little discussion about moves by publishers to redefine business models and re-establish direct relationships with their audiences. My love for the publishing industry, where I spent a large part of my career, and a desire to help solve for this challenge is a big part of the reason I joined Versus last year. We use AI to benefit publishers by transforming their passive content into interactive experiences that lead to more time spent on their sites and apps, drive deeper engagement and reward loyalty. At the end of the day, it's about winning by creating better experiences for the end user. Would love to see fewer complaints about a challenge the industry saw coming (and in many ways allowed to happen), and more reports on the ways smart publishers are experimenting with solutions that support the future of media.
