U.S. Coast Guard Petty Officer 2nd Class Tyler Jaggers, a rescue swimmer stationed at Air Station Astoria, has died after suffering critical injuries during a rescue mission off the Pacific Northwest coast. On February 27, a Coast Guard helicopter crew launched more than 120 miles offshore near Cape Flattery to evacuate a mariner suffering a medical emergency. During the dangerous nighttime rescue, Jaggers was seriously injured while carrying out the mission. For days he fought for his life surrounded by his fellow Coast Guard family. On March 5, he passed away. Tyler joined the Coast Guard in 2022 and served in Astoria beginning in 2024. In recognition of his extraordinary bravery and sacrifice, he was posthumously awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross and advanced in rank. Coast Guard rescue swimmers live by a simple but powerful motto: “So Others May Live.” Tyler Jaggers lived those words until the very end. The Oregon Coast community is mourning tonight. Please keep his family, friends, and the crews at Air Station Astoria in your thoughts. Rest easy, hero. Your watch is over. 🇺🇸⚓ If you appreciate the men and women of the U.S. Coast Guard, please take a moment to honor Petty Officer Tyler Jaggers. I do so with nothing but pride, gratitude, and profound respect for the amazing people who make up this incredible organization. I will leave behind nearly a third of a century of invaluable experiences and meaningful connections. I marvel at the opportunities that came my way: 19 assignments, 13 moves to 10 states, living in or visiting over 30 countries. These adventures include over 1,500 days deployed away from my family, including almost 900 days in the Middle East. In each assignment, I was proud to represent American freedom and opportunity to people at home and around the world. In every case, I tried to personify the ideals of our always imperfect, but ever-improving, and still grand experiment. What’s next? My wife and I are going to execute the plan we’ve been dreaming about for 25 years: we will return to Happy Valley & State College, PA, the home of Penn State University where our journey together started. We’re going to try our hand at farming. After the nomadic life we’ve lived, we acknowledge the power and necessity of literal and figurative roots – we’re going to plant them. I will stay involved in the National Security, Intelligence, Cyber Security, Policy and Civic Leadership space, because it matters. I feel it is my duty to remain engaged, as a citizen who has benefitted enormously from the opportunities afforded me. I’m going to be patient, I’m going to be selective, and whatever I do will matter. Military service has been the honor of a lifetime. Time to throttle back, reset, and then give back!
