NRG Energy announced it would acquire 18 natural gas-fired power plants with 13 GW of generation capacity as part of a $12-billion cash-and-stock deal with LS Power. The companies said NRG will pay LS Power $6.4 billion in cash and $2.8 billion in stocks as part of the deal. At the close of the deal, NRG will also assume $3.2 billion of net debt. LS Power, headquartered in New York City, is an energy infrastructure investment firm. NRG CEO Larry Cohen said the deal is driven by the expected rise in electricity demand from industrial customers, including data centers. “This transaction is a significant milestone for our firm and investors,” said Paul Segal, CEO of LS Power. The deal is the latest for NRG as the company looks to capitalize on growth in power demand. NRG acquired 738 MW of gas-fired assets from Texas-based Rockland Capital in March; the deal was for one combined-cycle unit and five peaker units. NRG signed power supply deals with two data center developers earlier this year, and the utility also has said it is working with GE Vernova to develop as much as 5.4 GW of new natural gas-fired generation capacity. LS Power has said it will keep its LS Power Grid (LSPG) platform. LSPG, representing the company’s competitive transmission business, has more than 780 miles of high-voltage transmission lines in operation and another 350-plus miles currently under construction or development, representing a combined capital investment of more than $6 billion. PJM capacity auction prices have reached record highs, with significant implications reverberating throughout the industry. Today, PJM Interconnection, serving 13 states and D.C., concluded its 2026–2027 capacity auction at the regulated price cap of $329.17/MW‑day, reflecting a substantial 22% increase from the previous year. This auction is set to disburse nearly $16.1 billion to generation resources by May 2027. Key Insights: 💡 Escalating Consumer Costs: PJM foresees a 1.5–5% surge in electricity expenses at the consumer level, varying based on state-level cost recovery mechanisms. 🚀 AI Data Centers Fuel Demand: The uptick in large-scale computational requirements, notably in Northern Virginia's "Data Center Alley," is surpassing the pace of generation infrastructure development. ⚠️ Supply Shortfalls on the Horizon: Despite securing approximately 134 GW of capacity with an approximate 18.9% reserve margin, the gap between supply additions and load growth is widening. 🏗️ Encouraging New Investments: The heightened prices are attracting interest from power producers, evident by around 2.7 GW of new generation and uprates clearing in this auction, signaling a fresh wave of investments. As we head into the Texas Nuclear Alliance Summit 2025, I have a singular message: Large reactors are ready to build today, yet many bottlenecks + opportunities abound. #westinghouse #ap1000 There’s a time and place for #SMR. SMRs are going to help with the hyperscalers, who can pay a premium for 24/7 access to behind-the-meter energy. But that might result in a bottleneck and misallocation of time, energy and resources toward SMRs rather than the type of large-scale, grid-changing power plants that have helped lower energy costs in countries around the world. If we want a cleaner form of energy for infrastructure, hospitals, military, for everyday consumers like you and me, for heat pumps and electric vehicles that are becoming more and more prevalent, then it really has to come from the gigawatt-class reactors. We need to build ahead of those chokepoints. Everstar is methodically slashing those bottlenecks one layer at a time. N of 1.
