I spoke recently with Andrew Winston, founder of Winston Eco-Strategies, and Fortune’s Adam Lashinsky about the business value of measuring sustainability. You can watch the video here: http://pwc.to/1pOxMVf. This is a relatively new, but increasingly important, issue for stakeholders, who are calling for more information and increased standardization so that they can effectively compare businesses' approaches to managing risks like climate change, severe weather disruptions, and resource scarcity. For example, in our recently released investor survey on sustainability (http://pwc.to/1irI7RG), 61% of investors surveyed were dissatisfied with disclosures by U.S. companies, and two thirds of those surveyed said they would be more likely to assess the materiality of environmental and social issues if common standards existed. We see some of our clients investing in the tools to measure sustainability internally, with an eye toward ultimately quantifying it for external disclosure, and we are closely monitoring this fast-evolving issue.
