This is a great interview with Kelsey Hightower diving into some of the philosophy of #DevOps! "I think infrastructure is only exciting when you think about it. Planes are only exciting when they don't do what we expect them to do. Once you land, you get off the plane, you don't think about it. It's only when you get turbulence." That really struck a chord! There is a lot of fun in getting to grips with something new and exciting - especially early on, when you're in greenfields. But as systems scale, constantly being pulled back into infrastructure becomes a distraction. You’ve moved on. Your focus should be elsewhere. The goal isn’t to make infrastructure interesting - it’s to make it reliable, repeatable, and boring. Build common patterns. Make it cookie-cutter. Set it up once, trust it to work, and only surface it when something unexpected happens. As soon as some chatgpt can execute a task end to end without any human involvement, the human in that process becomes obsolete. Why would a company like Google need you and your twenty dollars, once Gemini can launch and run startups on its own? That is why it makes sense to stop dreaming that AI will one day create fully functional, profitable applications from a single prompt for you. Yes, this will likely happen eventually. But by then, the one making money from it probably will not be you 💸
