AT&T completed the acquisition of the Lumen consumer FTTH division and Verizon completed the acquisition of Frontier. Next up is Cox+Charter. A lot of consolidation in the ISP space. Lot of changes in the cellco space as well. The big keep getting bigger - not better, just bigger - with hardly any anti-trust scrutiny. AT&T has far more market power now than it did in 1982 (they were divested in 1984).

Great reporting from Doug Adams on the problematic micro-management of this grant program by NTIA. Once envisioned as a “decentralized” program in which the federal Government recognized the states know their own markets better than a DC bureaucrat, BEAD is now looking more and more like a badly run reverse auction. This needs to be stopped.

Right now, in competitive FTTH markets, the incentive structure favors speed. Long-term operational viability tends to surface later. There’s a land grab happening in FTTH. Everyone wants passings. Everyone wants scale. Everyone wants to secure territory before someone else does. So teams get creative. They skip pre-positioning drop infrastructure. They may defer terminal installs. They assume aerial access will resolve as easily as it did in prior regions or projects. They price underground builds from spreadsheets instead of soil conditions. Some of it looks smart in the moment. It accelerates deployment metrics. It protects cost per passing. It keeps capital flowing. But here’s what the market eventually reveals: If you build primarily for near-term metrics instead of long-term operations, the tradeoffs surface over time. Operational shortcuts don’t disappear. They compound. They show up in O&M costs. They show up in customer experience. They show up in municipal relationships. They show up in valuation discussions. Speed matters. Operational durability matters more. The builders who win won’t just be the fastest. They’ll be the ones who built networks someone actually wants to operate and monetize.

Debt and spectrum pressures force EchoStar Corporation to Dish out its RAN Network to AT&T for $23B. DISH Network Technologies Boost Mobile sells 50MHz of national spectrum on 3.45GHz and 600MHz for 23 billion $. As a result of the deal, DISH will connect its subscribers on AT&T's RAN network (mostly Ericsson, with some Fujitsu Network Communications 1Finity) and its own 5G core network (Mavenir). DISH RAN network (Samsung Networks, MTI (Microelectronics Technology Inc.), 1Finity) will be decommissioned. Dish' #openRAN network could have been an addition to AT&T's if its radios were compatible with Ericsson's.
