Here's what I keep seeing on projects: the lighting and controls conversation starts too late. By the time someone asks "what's the controls strategy?" the electrical is already drawn, the panel schedules are set, and the options are limited. That's not a technology problem. It's a sequencing problem. The teams that bring infrastructure thinking into schematic design, not after CDs, are the ones cutting costs and compressing timelines. The rest are paying for it in change orders. Tom Kieley reacted on thisTom Kieley reacted on thisMy path to venture capital is different than most. I went to Virginia Tech. I built my first company in Blacksburg, Virginia. We were acquired by Rackspace, which brought me to San Antonio, Texas. No Ivy League schools. No MBA. No venture capital experience. But I’ve always been close to the startup world. Starting and building a company changed my life. My six years at Rackspace gave me experience at scale that I would not trade for anything. My 15-year journey from failing in our basement, to $10M in revenue and 60 incredible employees, to a life-changing acquisition, to executive at a pre-IPO and then $10B publicly traded company was a pretty good run. But like all good things, that run came to an end. When I left Rackspace going into 2014, I did not have a plan. I just knew it was time to go. And honestly, I was more lost than I expected. My career has always been an outsized part of my identity, and all of a sudden that identity was gone. It was a rough couple of years. I wanted to stay connected to the entrepreneurial world, so I started angel investing. I had zero investing experience, but I learned by doing. I backed a lot of companies. I had wins, lots of losses, and plenty of lessons learned. The biggest lesson was simple: I love the startup world. I love backing founders. I love venture capital. I love seeing creative people build the future. And I love playing a small part in their journey. So I decided to make venture capital my second act. It was not a straight line from entrepreneur to venture capitalist. I did not have a master plan. But I knew I wanted to start something new, and I loved investing. So I combined the entrepreneur in me with the investor in me. And Active Capital was born. My friend Lorenzo Gomez III writes more about that journey in Part 2 of his series on me and my story. We were also glad to have members of our internal team join us on site, reinforcing the collaboration and alignment that drive how we support our clients. In addition, we attended a Texas State University event hosted by Evan Jellison in support of the Engineering and Physics departments. We appreciated the opportunity to connect with students and contribute to conversations around careers in aerospace and defense. These interactions matter, and it is always a privilege to engage with the next generation of engineers. $12B into AI infrastructure in one region alone. This is real signal of what’s ahead. First - this is good for the local economy, no doubt: 540 high-skilled jobs. 1,700+ indirect roles. $400M toward water infrastructure. Real investment. Real impact. AI demand isn’t theoretical anymore… it’s physical. Land. Power. Water. Skilled labor. Community buildout. As AI scales, infrastructure becomes the constraint. The question isn’t whether AI will grow. The real question is: Can we scale intelligence without scaling waste? More data centers means more compute. More compute means more energy and water demand. Which means efficiency is no longer optional, it’s strategic and necessary. Infrastructure is expanding fast. It will continue to dominate headlines.
