Vid Mićević shared thisThis weekend I ran a trail marathon traversing the three Issaquah mountain peaks, entirely self supported. No crowds. No finish line. No music. Just my two legs, a hydration vest, a PB&J, and some mango strips. Why? It was my way of celebrating of earth week. A recalibration before the mayhem of SF Climate Week and DC Climate Week (proud of you all!!) Time slows down on the trail. Weaving between towering Douglas Firs and Western Red Cedars, jumping over snow thawed creeks, ducking under branches — keeps the prefrontal cortex busy, while my lizard brain awakens. My whole life accounts for a thin band of rings on a fallen tree. Earth Day isn't really about the earth. Nature shows off its glory every single day. We’re the ones that forgot how to look for it. Earth Day is about us: modern humans still pretending that our actions don’t have consequences, and that we aren’t a part of the larger ecosystem. It’s about building a world where humans and the rest of nature thrive together. If you’re actively donating and investing in this space, let’s connect at SF Climate Week. Vid Mićević shared thisOver a decade ago, I was a college kid volunteering at GreenBiz. Imposter syndrome was loud. I was in rooms with my heroes, convinced I didn’t belong. Last week, I walked those same halls in Phoenix for GreenBiz 26. This time, it felt like a homecoming. Back on the desert trails that shaped me, something clicked. The desert doesn’t survive despite scarcity. It evolves because of it. Similarly, that’s the story of this year’s GreenBiz: Risk & Resilience. Risk is understanding that our resources are limited. Resilience is doing something about it. I'm now realizing the people I once looked up are just people willing to step forward. Maybe that's what resilience is. And right now, solitude is where I find myself inspired. A few weeks ago, I started writing for ten minutes every morning. Just me, the page, and my stream of consciousness. It's called morning pages, and it clears the noise long enough for my actual thoughts/feelings to emerge. You just need some space to listen to yourself.

She crushed it out there 🙌🏼 Now, less than 12 hours later, I’m heading to NYC Climate Week… a triathlon in its own sense. Each leg is different. Panels, networking, intimate dinners. They all have their own pros and cons. The key is to play to your strengths while pacing yourself through the rest. In the climate space, we have updates on projects that think big (a new aggregated VPPA with Carhartt) and small (first carbon credits from the Family Forest Carbon Program with American Forest Foundation), local (a partnership with Florida Atlantic University’s Pine Jog Environmental Education Center for high school students via Sol Systems) and global (retirement of our first sustainable marine fuel credits via ZEMBA). But what excites me most about this year’s Impact Report is the incredible work happening across the entire co‑op. A few highlights: Ambercycle's circularity innovations with polyester, millions (!) of messages sent via the Cooperative Action Network, and the way inclusive design shows up in latest bike designs. Massachusetts is doing a lot of things right on climate policy and innovation, and ClimaTech Live brought together a sharp mix of people across policy, finance, and startups to prove it. Here are my key takeaways. Drop a comment if something resonates, or if you push back on any of it. And as always, loved seeing old friends and meeting new ones! Susan Hunt Stevens, Brian E Kurtz, Katie MacDonald, Julia Travaglini, Sam Crum, Katie Rae, Luke Sawitsky, Andy Klump, Sean M. Kondas, Raphael Herz, Sammie Hasen, Tiya Gordon, Jack Taylor, Dr. Chima McGruder, Chase Johnson Show up to town meetings: - Yes, they're usually painful! But clean energy projects typically get slowed or blocked because only the opposition shows up. Resilience is a business imperative: - The word "resilience" is up 162% in corporate earnings calls since 2020. - Utilities plan to invest $1.4 trillion in infrastructure upgrades by 2030. - Mitigation and resilience are linked, as mitigation projects need resilience infrastructure baked in as they scale. Progress on climate tech deployment is real: - We're 13.5% of the way toward the low-emissions tech deployment needed to hit 2050 goals. Paris agreement aligned pace would put us at 17%. Industrial energy use dwarfs data centers. - Data centers get the headlines but represent about 4% of electricity use today, with IEA projections topping out around 12% by 2030. Industrial energy use sits at 30 to 40%. Stories and emotion move people, not scientific reports: - Historically, the climate movement figured this out the hard way. The factory image needs an update: - Most people still picture black smoke and rust. That's not what modern manufacturing looks like. Closing that perception gap matters if we're serious about building things in this country again. For climate startups: - Lead with value, not technology. Customers and investors want to know: is it easy to use, fast to deploy, does it save money, and does it create positive impact? - Climate startups operate inside a policy environment, which is much different from traditional software startups. The argument was simple: As the planet warms, billions of people in hot countries will need cooling to survive. Air conditioning is one of the most greenhouse-gas-intensive technologies we have. The cooling demand of India alone, met with today's vapour-compression systems and refrigerant gases, could push warming past tipping points and make large parts of the world uninhabitable. A self-reinforcing loop. The hotter it gets, the more we cool. The more we cool, the hotter it gets. 🌡️ 🔄 I have not stopped thinking about that article since. Heating and cooling already account for around 15% of global CO2 emissions. Cooling alone exceeded 4 Gt of CO2e in 2022, and demand is expected to triple by 2050. 📈 Data centres in Europe already spend roughly 37% of their energy just on cooling. And the underlying technology, vapour compression, is essentially 200 years old. This is exactly why we at World Fund led Barocal's $10M Seed round. Built on more than 15 years of research at the University of Cambridge by Prof. Xavier Moya, the leading scientific mind in caloric materials, Barocal has cracked something the field has been pursuing for decades: a solid-state cooling and heating platform that rivals vapour-based incumbents on cost. No refrigerant gases. Significantly lower emissions. A real path to scale. The market is around $450bn today and projected to reach $577bn by 2033. The team is exceptional. The timing is right. 🎉 For Europe, this is more than a climate story. It is energy security. Less dependence on imported gases. More efficient cooling for the data centres our economy now runs on. It started in 2020, peak pandemic, when my girlfriend nudged me toward Al Gore's first-ever virtual Climate Reality Project program. That shifted everything, eventually leading to my departure from the corporate world to begin advising and investing in early-stage climate startups. A couple of years later, my friend Daniel Kriozere introduced me to Enduring Planet and the high-impact work they were doing to connect climate founders with non-dilutive funding. I was immediately hooked and joined their Scout community. Around the same time, Five Spheres was gaining some serious momentum, as I began advising early-stage climate startups on investor relations, business development, GTM strategies, and operational systems. 1,000+ founder conversations. 100+ companies advised. $50M+ raised through capital introductions. Not long after that, I joined my friend Daniel Kleinman & Seaworthy Collective as the non-profit's first Investor-in-Residence, further advancing my work in investor relations and startup program development. Through it all, one theme never changed: a relentless commitment to increasing my impact on the climate space. In early 2025, CRC lost $1.4 million in anticipated federal funding, part of a broader $260 million rollback across California. Tom Llamas is an American journalist who anchors NBC Nightly News and Top Story, which streams on my TV. Besides being handsome and gifted with journalism, he enjoys stories that feature diverse cultural concepts. Last night, Tom interviewed a Japanese journalist who reported that the Kansai Airport, in Osaka, Japan, has never had a lost baggage incident in the 30 years since it opened in 1994, earning recognition as the airport with the world's best baggage service. The reporter thoroughly investigated the process and says that the Japanese treat the luggage the same as they do the traveler and handle the baggage with great care. Imagine what would happen if we learned from the Japanese about such customer service excellence? My-my what a different world we would enjoy. Each week, I encourage my colleagues and friends to post a new opportunity, share scholarship resources, and/or repost an article or blog post about better mechanisms for searching for or procuring a job. There are many. Did I say MANY people are out of work? So let's pay it forward, do our part, and share opportunities and resources. There is also another Japanese concept of Ikigai, which represents the reason for being or purpose in life. It is derived from the combination of two Japanese words: Iki (meaning "alive" or "life") and gai (meaning "benefit" or "worth"). Ikigai is about finding activities that bring joy, are meaningful, and contribute to the world, aligning personal passions with societal needs. This concept emphasizes the importance of having a clear direction and purpose in life, which can lead to a fulfilling life. I believe my life purpose is to bless others with positive, proactive, and helpful information. There is too much negative noise and distracting backbiting on social media and in the news airwaves. Let's change the tenor of websites like LinkedIn by sharing what we know, what comes across our desk, and a bit of encouragement. Let's do it without fanfare or negotiating a change or cost, so that a potential candidate or a student seeking financial support for college or the Trades will see it and be blessed—does that sound good? You are all amazing, and I adore you. Have a great weekend. I don't have connections with those employers or sources, so I can't connect you or get you in. Today we share 4 new funding commitments added to Impact Mapper's 2026 Funding Database: 🔸The Climate Smart Communities Initiative (CSCI) Grant seeks to provide funding and technical assistance to advance community-based climate resilience in US communities or regions that are highly vulnerable to the impacts of climate change. Grants typically range from $75,000 to $115,000 based on the scope of work proposed in the application. CSCI anticipates awarding between 16-20 grants for the 2026 cycle. In From Take-Make-Waste to Regenerate: Building a Just Circular Economy, Together, Natalia King Quick shares how the County of San Diego is advancing Zero Waste and circular economy goals through cross-department collaboration and community-centered action. Natalia is a Sustainability & Environmental Justice Liaison with the County of San Diego Office of Sustainability & Environmental Justice. Her work spans waste diversion, environmentally preferable procurement, and public engagement, including organizing the County’s annual Earth Day Fair. She brings hands-on experience from both County operations and nonprofit recycling programs.
