Maroš Šefčovič shared thisThe follow-up to the World Trade Organization Ministerial Conference at Yaoundé: We welcome WTO Members' efforts at today’s General Council to restore a multilateral e-commerce moratorium, essential for business certainty worldwide. While we regret that a multilateral outcome has not been found yet, the EU will continue working towards that objective. Our immediate priority now is to restore certainty and predictability for businesses globally. The EU will therefore maintain the practice of not imposing customs duties on electronic transmissions, in line with our commitments in the WTO E-Commerce Agreement and our Free Trade Agreements and Digital Trade Agreements. Against that background, we also welcome the "Joint Statement on the Moratorium on Customs Duties on Electronic Transmissions" issued today by a number of WTO members following the General Council. This is a meaningful step to help preserve stability in the current context that the EU is carefully considering, including with its Member States. European Commission EU Trade 📷 #MC14

Maroš Šefčovič shared this🇪🇺🇯🇵 I concluded the first meeting of the reinforced High-Level Economic Dialogue with Japan, which I co-chaired with Executive Vice-President Stéphane Séjourné on the EU side. On the Japanese side, the Dialogue was co-chaired by Trade Minister Akazawa and State Minister Horii. The EU-Japan partnership is strategic, reliable and forward-looking – and thus increasingly essential in today's global economy. With this Dialogue and our stepped-up cooperation on #economicsecurity, we are delivering on the EU-Japan #Competitiveness Alliance announced by our Leaders in summer 2025. For the EU, economic security is not about isolation, nor is it about protectionism. It is about becoming more resilient and reducing vulnerabilities together with like-minded partners, such as Japan. Our bilateral priorities are concrete: - We are addressing the growing use of trade-restrictive practices that exploit dependencies in global supply chains. - At the same time, we are reducing risks in key sectors, such as critical #rawmaterials and semiconductors. On critical minerals in particular, the EU and Japan are closely aligned and will reinforce their bilateral engagement, while also cooperating closely in plurilateral settings, including within the G7 and the US-led track. Moreover, we have agreed on a list of strategic technologies for joint assessment. As a first step, we will map risks. But we will not stop there. We must also develop effective and complementary strategies to ensure that we do not lose our technological edge. The EU-Japan partnership is rooted in respect for and commitment to a rules-based international order. Therefore, we will work together to deliver meaningful World Trade Organization reform. In parallel, we will continue working with partners that share our commitment to rules-based trade. The EU-CPTPP cooperation is a case in point. Together, the EU and CPTPP represent nearly one billion people and around one-third of global GDP. That is a powerful foundation for shaping open, resilient and rules-based trade. Maroš Šefčovič shared thisLast night, we spent almost six hours in an important trilogue on the tariff regulation implementing the 🇪🇺🇺🇸 Joint Statement between the European Union and the United States. This significant investment of time and effort suggests that we are making considerable progress and have already achieved a lot – although, of course, nothing is agreed until everything is agreed. My objective remains three-fold: · First, to demonstrate that the EU is walking the talk and honouring its commitments. · Second, to secure a result that fully respects the EU-US Joint Statement. · Third, to preserve the interests of EU stakeholders, including by equipping the Commission with the instruments necessary to ensure that the EU-US Joint Statement is faithfully implemented by both sides. Further stabilising EU-US trade, by reinforcing predictability for EU businesses, including many SMEs, and safeguarding jobs that depend on transatlantic trade of unprecedented scale is in everyone's interest. The intensive work continues between the Commission and the co-legislators to achieve a positive outcome swiftly. I also remain in close contact with my U.S. counterparts on the next steps in our legislative process, while calling on the U.S. administration to honour its commitments. Maroš Šefčovič shared thisThe EU trade agenda is essential for European prosperity, competitiveness and for our global standing. To keep driving this agenda forward - for the benefit of our consumers, businesses and farmers - we need committed leadership at both political and technical level. With this in mind, I spoke to Sabine Weyand and offered her my sincere thanks for her outstanding stewardship of the European Commission's Directorate for Trade and Economic Security. I first worked with Sabine during the EU-UK post-Brexit negotiations where her professionalism and expertise were evident. Since we started working together on the challenging portfolio of trade and economic security, Sabine contributed to navigating a new and complex geopolitical landscape, while achieving outstanding results - most notably, an unprecedented series of modern and dynamic Free Trade Agreements, including with Indonesia, Mercosur, India and Australia. I wish Sabine all the best in her new role. It has been a pleasure working with her. I now look forward to collaborating with Ditte Juul Jørgensen, with whom I also have had a strong working relationship in the past, particularly on energy security. The shape and global standing of Europe's steel sector are fundamental to our strategic autonomy and industrial strength. We therefore cannot afford to turn a blind eye to global overcapacity reaching critical levels. Today's political agreement on the measure to protect the 🇪🇺 steelmaking sector against global overcapacity helps bring much-needed stability for our producers to thrive in Europe - because this is, at its core, about people and jobs.
