Nikos Mertzanidis reposted thisNikos Mertzanidis reposted thisA historic day for for us at Ports of Faxaflói - and for Icelandic tourism 🚢⚓👏 Today, the expedition cruise ship Le Commandant Charcot made history as the very first vessel to welcome passengers through Vör, the brand-new Reykjavík Cruise Terminal. Seeing it come to life - with passengers arriving, departing, and seamlessly transitioning between journeys - is something truly special. Vör is Iceland’s first purpose-built cruise passenger terminal and the first new passenger terminal to rise in Reykjavík in 60 years. And what a way to begin! Le Commandant Charcot, a world-class expedition vessel built for Arctic exploration, connecting Reykjavík with some of the most remote and remarkable destinations on Earth. But this is just the beginning. Beyond the cruise season, Vör will transform into a vibrant venue for events, celebrations, and gatherings - bringing people together year-round in a truly unique setting by the sea. Congratulations to everyone involved in making Vör a reality - this is a proud moment. #Reykjavik #Iceland #VisitReykjavik #WeAreCruise #Maritime #ReykjavikPort #Faxaports #Ship #Vör

Nikos Mertzanidis reposted thisNikos Mertzanidis reposted thisTime to look back at a very successful event on the implementation of the EU Industrial Maritime Strategy and EU Ports Strategy organised in Athens on 30 April 2026. At the same moment, time to look forward, with the very concrete input we received during the panels and the formal and informal exchanges. Innovation, deployment, the specific characteristics of insularity, competitiveness, port ecosystems and jobs and skills in an integrated approach towards a competitive, resilient and sustainable future. This event would not have been possible without the co-organiser, and host, Ίδρυμα Ευγενίδου / Eugenides Foundation and the MINISTRY OF MARITIME AFFAIRS & INSULAR POLICY, under which auspices the event was organised. Furthermore, a special word of thanks to all key note speakers, members of the panel, and colleagues involved in organising this event. As indicated during the closing session, this event could serve as a model for future exchanges. Anastasia Vamvaka, Anastasios Georgiou

Nikos Mertzanidis reposted thisNikos Mertzanidis reposted this🏛️ From Athens today 🇬🇷, where Europe’s maritime priorities took centre stage. CLIA was pleased to take part in a high-level meeting on the EU Industrial Maritime Strategy and the EU Ports Strategy, hosted by the WaterborneTP with the Ίδρυμα Ευγενίδου / Eugenides Foundation and under the auspices of the Greek Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Insular Policy, with a clear focus: how to turn policy into implementation across the port ecosystem. 🎤 Commissioner Apostolos Tzitzikostas set the tone in his keynote, highlighting the central role of ports in Europe’s competitiveness, energy transition and resilience. Minister Vassilis Kikilias also underscored the importance of island connectivity and insular policy, pointing to the critical role of port infrastructure in supporting island communities and regional cohesion. 🗺️ 🗣️ In the “Port Ecosystem” panel, Nikos Mertzanidis joined fellow speakers to bring the cruise perspective: “Ports are becoming energy hubs at the centre of Europe’s maritime transition, but delivery will depend on aligning infrastructure, investment and regulation across the entire port ecosystem.” 🔌⛽ From onshore power deployment to alternative fuel availability, the message was consistent: progress is underway but uneven, especially for small and medium-sized ports. The discussion also pointed to what will matter most in the next phase: ⚓ Coordinated investment across ships and port infrastructure ⚓ A predictable and coherent regulatory framework ⚓ Targeted EU support, including through the next Multiannual Financial Framework Competitiveness and decarbonisation will advance together only if the entire port ecosystem moves forward in step. 🙌 EU Transport | Leonidas Dimitriadis-Evgenidis | Jaap Gebraad | Helena Athoussaki | Minas Papadakis | Apostolos G. This year, more than 250 schoolchildren from across the city took part, showcasing their creativity and teamwork through collaborative collages made from recycled materials, bringing together both innovation and environmental awareness. The initiative was made possible with the support of the Autoridad Portuaria de Santa Cruz de Tenerife. Puertos de Tenerife, the Santa Cruz de Tenerife City Council, and MSC Cruises. 💬 CLIA President and CEO Bud Darr congratulated the winners, noting that through this engaging program, students "learned about the people skills, teamwork, creativity, and care that make Cruise possible every single day." ⏩️ Programs like this are exactly how we inspire the next generation, and this class proved they are more than up to the challenge. 🛳️ #WeARECruise

During this time, I had the privilege of working alongside dedicated colleagues, trusted partners, and valued customers. Together, we built strong foundations, developed new business opportunities, and contributed to the continued growth of the company. What I value most, however, are the people I had the opportunity to meet along the way — especially on the customer side. Many of these relationships have grown far beyond business and have become genuine friendships. For that, I am deeply grateful, and I am certain that our paths will cross again. When I joined, my ambition was to help drive meaningful commercial development across sales, supply chain, business development, IT, and AI. Looking back, I am proud of what we achieved together and grateful for the trust, collaboration, and experiences built along the way. I would like to thank everyone who was part of this journey. I know that I leave MAVEKO in safe hands, and I look forward to seeing what comes next. #Leadership #BusinessDevelopment #Sales #SupplyChain #IT #AI #DigitalTransformation #NewChapter

Strengthening the resilience of Europe’s maritime sector and ports means greater energy security, stronger strategic autonomy, and more competitive supply chains. At the same time, it supports jobs, innovation, and the transition to sustainable transport. Our goal is clear: a stronger, crisis-ready Europe with modern infrastructure and safe mobility for all.

🚆🇪🇺 Exciting times ahead: the EU’s draft 2028–2034 MFF includes a historic doubling of transport infrastructure funding (from ≈ €25.6 bn to ≈ €51.5 bn) and a tenfold boost in military mobility spending (~€17 bn). This is a strategic breakthrough, recognizing transport infrastructure as essential to EU cohesion, competitiveness, and security. For Romania, it means: 📌 Faster upgrades to TEN‑T corridors and Solidarity Lanes 📌 Revamped port and multimodal logistics in Constanța, Galați, Sulina 📌 Balanced investments in road, rail, river and urban networks 📌 A clearer path to attract investors and accelerate projects aligned with EU’s eastern and defence priorities 📍 Romania stands at the crossroads of Europe — the time to invest is now. #EUTransport #TEN‑T #Romania #MilitaryMobility #InfrastructureInvestment #EuropeanCohesion

At yesterday’s European Council, EU leaders — including Belgian Prime Minister Bart De Wever — focused mainly on two key strategic priorities: 🛡️ Defence: advancing European defence integration through joint investments, standardisation, interoperability, and strengthening Europe’s defence & industrial base. 📈 Competitiveness: addressing global trade tensions, high energy prices, and delivering results on the single market and strategic trade opportunities. Our Directorate-General for EU Affairs @SPF Affaires étrangères, Commerce extérieur et Coopération au Développement coordinated Belgium’s position across the full agenda, from Ukraine and the Middle East to defence, competitiveness, migration, enlargement and the Western Balkans. #EUCO #Defence #Competitiveness #Geoeconomics #StrategicAutonomy #EUaffairs

The European Commission is pleased to announce the adoption by the European Parliament of the new BRIDGEforEU Regulation on 6 May 2025. The Regulation establishes a new instrument “to facilitate identifying and resolving cross-border obstacles”. Around 150 million Europeans live close to a border, in regions with a huge potential for economic growth and integration but whose development and interactions are hindered by legal and administrative discrepancies. According to a study funded by the Commission, removing 20% of current obstacles would boost GDP by 2% in cross-border regions and create over one million jobs.

As the Brussels-bubble event season is starting, here some advice from a non-event organiser that has suffered through many events. Invitations needs to be clear. Information such as date, time, place and agenda need to be easily findable. Fancy formatting often makes it more difficult to navigate the invitation because it rarely looks good after having been processed by security systems before arriving in my inbox. Do not offend the invitees. Make it easy to sign-up and do not force me to make an account. On a personal note, do not write in bold and capital letters that you got “all relevant policymakers” on the panel, when no Member State is present. I like to think that Member States are important too. Avoid echo-chambers. Too many events end up being a therapy session where panellists agree that someone should do something. The organisers tend to think it makes a great event, while the poor policymaker in the panel and most of the audience are looking for the emergency exists. Keep it real – avoid Pseudo-discussions. Too often, panel discussions resemble poor theatrical performances with well-rehearsed and standard answers to anticipated questions. It lacks the nerve that keeps the audience’s attention. Interesting panels start with panellists of different views that have a genuine discussion. Steer the discussion. That means getting a good moderator asking the tough questions. Answers to uncomfortable questions are where the audience is alert and where the answers can make a real impact. Use the buzz-word bingo detector. Most people in Brussels possesses the ability to speak at length without saying anything substantial. Make sure that the moderator is well-prepared and has the ability recognise and cut-through when a panellist suffers from excessive talking. That also means quitting opening remarks or keep them short. Expectation management. Make sure that people participating in the discussion have time and material to prepare. But do not hand out the exact questions before the event to avoid pseudo-discussions.

The EU-US Framework Agreement offers the best path to avoid damaging escalation and advance a more positive, cooperative transatlantic agenda. We continue to oppose tariffs, but there’s a bigger €8.7 trillion economic relationship at stake. We hope to see the Commission’s tariff reduction proposals adopted swiftly by the European Parliament and Member States, so that the rest of the implementation can move ahead. My quick take at the end of a lively Euractiv debate on EU-US trade and the implementation of the deal ⬇️

Last week in Brussels, we brought together policymakers and tourism leaders to discuss how tourism can support the revitalisation of rural Europe. As travel demand continues to shift beyond major cities, rural destinations are becoming an increasingly important part of Europe’s tourism economy. When supported by the right policy frameworks, tourism can strengthen local economies, create jobs and help communities thrive. Distributed accommodation, such as short term rentals, play a key role in enabling this shift, particularly in areas where traditional capacity is limited. Thank you to all speakers, Teodora Marinska, Sandra Carvao, Nicholas Hall for a thoughtful discussion. Watch the recap video below to revisit the highlights and continue the conversation on tourism as a force for positive change across rural Europe.

"Our study shows that the majority of the population in the seven European countries we surveyed has little knowledge of the major sources of air pollutants. Our analysis of perceived polluting sectors has shown that people see industry and vehicular traffic as the most relevant sources of air pollutants. Our findings also indicate that respondents’ education, age, place of residence or gender influence only to a small extent the perception of air pollution causes. This suggests that the lack of information and knowledge about the causes of air pollution is widespread across different socio-economic groups and countries and that even respondents with higher levels of education are not fully aware of the actual sources of air pollution." https://lnkd.in/dY5j8ygu

On 12 February 2026, the European Parliament adopted its resolution on “addressing subcontracting chains and the role of intermediaries in order to protect workers’ rights” which will feed into the Commission’s forthcoming Fair Mobility Package / Quality Jobs Act (2026). 📌 The final resolution does not call for an EU-wide mandatory cap on the length of subcontracting chains and recognises that subcontracting is not inherently problematic and is an essential practice in many sectors, particularly for SMEs. The resolution does call for better enforcement, more transparency and proportionate measures in high-risk situations. For logistics and freight forwarding, this distinction is fundamental. International supply chains are by definition highly specialised and geographically distributed. Freight forwarders coordinate infrastructure, expertise and capacity provided by regional carriers, customs brokers, warehouse operators and multimodal partners across borders. Very few companies in Europe, if any, can internalise the entire chain of services 📦🚛🚢✈️🚂. If the EU’s objective were to phase out smaller, specialised companies and concentrate activity in the hands of a few vertically integrated actors, then limiting subcontracting would indeed be an effective tool. A blanket restriction on subcontracting chains would: ⚠️ Disproportionately affect SMEs ⚠️ Reduce flexibility in international supply chains ⚠️ Increase market concentration ⚠️ Raise costs for European businesses and consumers As CLECAT has underlined in its feedback to the Commission on the Fair Labour Mobility Package, the EU already has an extensive regulatory framework governing posting, social security coordination and enforcement. The priority should be consistent enforcement, legal clarity and digital tools. As the Commission prepares the Quality Jobs Act, the balance between worker protection, SME participation and the functioning of international supply chains will be decisive. CLECAT will remain closely engaged. #QualityJobsAct #FairMobility #Subcontracting #SMEs #Logistics #FreightForwarding #SingleMarket https://lnkd.in/e2gDSJdG
