Mourad Yesayan reposted thisMourad Yesayan reposted thisWith the signing of President Biden’s sweeping Executive Order on artificial intelligence today at The White House, we wanted to flag that last Thursday, Chris Inglis (who, until recently led White House’s Office of the National Cyber Director), Prof Mary Aiken, and I wrote a piece in Barron's on protecting innovation while prioritizing the values of free and open societies. We wrote the piece not only as policy wonks but also as investors and advisors to Paladin Capital Group. In the article we lauded our nation’s free enterprise system, noting that “the U.S. has largely rejected government control in favor of private sector-driven capitalism, augmented, when necessary, by the use of limited government power…ma[king] the U.S. one of the most innovative nations the world has ever known.” We also argued that “[a]bandoning that approach now—at a time of massive change and opportunity—would be a mistake. And it would ignore the clear reality that government, on its own, simply can’t drive—much less constrain—the kind of innovation that is critical to maintaining American and allied leadership in AI and other emerging technologies.” Instead we argued that “[t]rust, safety, and security must be the watchwords that guide us—whether in investment, innovation, or legislation—as we sprint to take advantage of the vast opportunities being created by AI and other emerging technologies.” And we suggested the government should “develop frameworks, based on rapidly evolving private sector best practices, to inculcate trust, safety, and security into the core of the AI development and deployment process” and also “incentivize the American and allied investors and innovators who are putting money and shoe leather into backing the companies and developing technologies that promote trust, safety, and security.” As you read The White House EO, if you want want to know more about what we hoped to see, check out our Barron's oped at the link below. Mourad Yesayan liked thisMourad Yesayan liked thisA couple years ago I lost out on a job offer as a result of my social media. The company's executives were concerned that I'd be a brand risk due to my unprofessional posting style. I remember sitting down and spending a lot of time thinking about that. Re-evaluating where I'd be in my career if I sanitized my public persona and just did the whole corporate drone thing. The idea of changing my entire image just to appease corporations didn't really sit right with me. I was also pretty sure no amount of money would be worth having to keep up a fake personality 24/7. At the time, I was making enough from social media to pay my bills. So I ended up deciding to just take a break from employment and focus on growing my brand. It seems that compared to climbing the corporate ladder, it had way more financial upside. Ironically, as things began to take off, I started getting job offers from companies as a result of my social media profile. When I asked them about it, they basically just said the potential brand risk is negligible, but the brand exposure is not. It's somewhat of a bitter-sweet situation. Because I know I'd be making way more money doing content creation full time. But I absolutely love being a cybersecurity researcher and making a real difference, which I can't do if I'm just making videos 24/7. But either way, it's great that I can just be myself. I think ultimately, that matters more than anything.

Mourad Yesayan liked thisMourad Yesayan liked thisMost "flyaway kits" aren't really flyaway kits. Half of them are laptops in padded cases. The other half are so large that they require freight shipping to get on site, which defeats the purpose. A laptop works fine for a two-hour packet capture. It falls apart the moment you need to: - Run multi-day collection without dropping packets - Parse real ICS protocols (Modbus, DNP3, OPC UA, IEC 104) - Operate in an air-gapped environment with zero outbound traffic - Produce something an auditor will actually accept The freight-shipped boxes handle the technical side, but if your "portable" kit needs a pallet jack, you've lost the plot. This is exactly why we built Cygnet the way we did. It's the smallest flyaway kit on the market today with the most compute behind it. Carry-on sized, fully offline, running the full Valkyrie analytics stack locally with no cloud dependency. We wrote up a full guide on OT flyaway kits, when to use them, what to look for, and how they fit into permanent monitoring programs and NERC CIP-015. If you've ever shown up to a site with a laptop, a SPAN port that doesn't work, and three days to figure it out, this one will probably feel familiar. Mourad Yesayan liked thisMourad Yesayan liked thisMy wife Kathy just got nominated for a James Beard Award ‼️ For anyone outside the food world: the Beards are the Oscars of food. There is nothing bigger. Every cookbook published in the U.S. last year was eligible (thousands of them) and the Foundation just narrowed it down to three nominees per category. Kathy is one of them. House of Nanking: Family Recipes from San Francisco's Favorite Chinese Restaurant (co-authored with her dad, Peter Fang) is a finalist in the Professional and Restaurant category. It's the story of the restaurant her father built from nothing in 1988, the recipes that made it a SF institution, and the family that has kept it running for nearly 40 years. I've watched her work on this book for years. The late nights testing recipes. The conversations with her dad pulling out memories he hadn't shared in decades. The pressure of trying to do justice to a story that belongs to her whole family and to a city that adopted them. Watching the people you love chase something this hard, and then watching the world recognize it. There's nothing like it 🔥 Winners are announced June 13 at the Art Institute of Chicago. Whatever happens that night, she's already done the thing. So proud of you, Kathy Fang 🥇

CMMC isn’t theoretical anymore. We’re seeing it show up in contract modifications, renewals, and supplier requirements across the defense supply chain. Recently, we worked with a mid-size defense manufacturer supporting multiple DoD programs who suddenly found themselves navigating different contract clauses and CMMC expectations at the same time. The challenge wasn’t just compliance. It was making sure their operational environment stayed stable and secure while preparing for CMMC Level 2. The Valor Cybersecurity team helped them navigate it using our 5-Step Readiness Process: 1. Scoping The company initially believed CUI touched nearly every system in their environment. Through scoping workshops and data flow mapping, we identified where CUI actually lived, reducing the compliance boundary significantly. 2. Gap Assessment We evaluated their environment against NIST 800-171 controls and identified the real gaps. They had strong technical security in place, but documentation, evidence collection, and several access control processes needed work. 3. Implementation Plan Rather than disrupting operations, we built a phased roadmap that prioritized the highest-risk controls first while aligning implementation with their production schedules. 4. Documentation & Evidence We developed the policies, procedures, and evidence artifacts needed to support a future CMMC assessment. Because if it isn’t documented, it didn’t happen. 5. Continuous Compliance Finally, we helped them establish processes for ongoing monitoring, logging, and internal reviews so they could maintain compliance across multiple contracts. The result: A clear CMMC boundary, a structured remediation roadmap, and leadership confidence that the environment will support upcoming contract requirements. CMMC readiness isn’t just about passing an audit. It’s about ensuring your business can continue to win and execute defense contracts without operational disruption. If you’re in the #DefenseSupplyChain, the time to prepare is now.

As a cybersecurity company serving SMBs in the defense industry, Dave’s conversation with Lt. Gen. Nahom (USAF, ret), resonated deeply with our mission at RADICL. His insights on the "valley of death" for innovative defense technologies hit especially close to home — companies develop remarkable solutions but struggle to secure the funding pathway from AFWERX/SBIR to program of record. Another great insight was Lt. Gen. Nahom's emphasis on domain awareness gaps. The Chinese balloon incident showed that our security architecture is still designed for traditional threats rather than emerging ones that move at the speed of wind or much faster like hypersonic vehicles. This challenge parallels what we see in cybersecurity, where the threat landscape constantly evolves beyond conventional defense designs. Lt. Gen. Nahom's perspective on data integration as the game-changer by 2030 aligns perfectly with our approach. When he described airmen manually connecting information from disparate systems through chat rooms and keyboards, I couldn't help but think about similar inefficiencies in security operations. His example of aircraft being routed to bases without the right spare parts because systems couldn't communicate effectively mirrors the challenges our clients face daily. The most valuable takeaway? Lt. Gen. Nahom's advice for small companies to partner directly with combatant commands and OSD rather than working exclusively through individual services. This creates alternative funding paths that bypass the severely constrained service budgets. Hard to believe it has already been a month since the #CMMC Rule in CFR 48 went live! In that short time, we’ve seen new solicitations include CMMC requirements and several primes have issued memos to their supply chain urging them to get ready now. The shift from discussion to action is becoming very clear. We’re also seeing real momentum in assessments. Including the early voluntary assessments, more than 500 organizations have now received their final #C3PAO Level 2 certification, and more than 1,700 have self-assessed at Level 2 as of November. On a personal note, I’m grateful to have supported three organizations in obtaining their Final C3PAO Level 2 Certification with a perfect score. Currently, the ecosystem appears capable of sustaining roughly 100 C3PAO assessments per month, with capacity continuing to grow. While additional capacity will still be needed, the ecosystem growth is outpacing how quickly organizations are preparing for their formal assessments. I’m looking forward to seeing how the landscape evolves in 2026. CMMC is prompting important conversations about cost, but it is also pushing more companies to take security seriously. It has been encouraging to see so many executives recognizing why protecting data matters. I hope that trend continues, and I hope to keep helping organizations implement strong security practices that protect #CUI and proprietary data, with compliance becoming the natural byproduct. If you’d like additional context on any of these developments or want to discuss what preparation should look like, feel free to reach out.
