I think lots of players get a bit stagnant at the collegiate level - slow growth - lack of development. Same player they were as a Freshman as they are as a Senior. There's a lot you can do with an athlete in 4 years. Especially when the coaching is here. It can be transformational when you get it right. Mike is on that level and will immediately bring value on Day 1- and develop our Tigers into better people and footy players. How good.

Marc Downes liked thisMarc Downes liked thisThe Yale Women's Rugby program gathered in the Trophy Room at Payne Whitney Gymnasium to celebrate the close of the 2025–26 season at the annual awards night. The following awards were presented to honor the players who excelled this past season. Player of the Year — Lauren Delwiche '26 Awarded to the player who excelled on the field. Rookie of the Year — Elita You '29 Awarded to the player who excelled on the field in their first year playing. Teammate of the Year — Samantha Mayol '26 Awarded to the player who consistently lives and displays Yale Rugby values. Coaches' Award — Vivian Wu '27 An outstanding player who, despite being sidelined through injury, never missed a week, showing up to support her team throughout. A true embodiment of what this program stands for. The awards night rounded off an excellent year for the club. The team celebrated the 150th anniversary, won the inaugural Founders Cup vs Columbia, made the League Championship Match, finished third at the Ivy Sevens, and enjoyed an International tour to Ireland. A great season all round!

Marc Downes liked thisMarc Downes liked thisYale Claims Koranda Cup for Sixth Consecutive Year The Yale Men's Rugby continued its dominance over Princeton Men's Rugby, securing the Koranda Cup for a sixth consecutive year with a composed 26–12 victory in New Jersey. A Battle Into the Wind: Yale entered the match knowing the importance of managing the opening half while playing into a heavy wind. The game plan was clear: control possession, stay disciplined, and keep the score tight heading into halftime. Despite spending long stretches deep in their own half, Yale’s defense stood firm. The side showed resilience under pressure, repeatedly repelling Princeton attacks and maintaining structure when it mattered most. While there were moments of frustration—particularly when offloads or ambitious passes broke down just as pressure was building—the defensive effort ensured Yale stayed level. At halftime, the score remained locked at 5–5, exactly where Yale needed it to be. Second-Half Control: With the wind now at their backs and greater clarity in their approach, Yale took control of the match in the second half. Improved territorial play and more disciplined execution quickly paid off, as Yale struck early to take the lead. From there, momentum firmly shifted. Yale built pressure through sustained phases and clinical finishing, adding two more converted tries to extend the lead to 26–5. Princeton managed a late converted try, but the outcome was never in doubt. Yale controlled the closing stages with composure, securing a deserved 26–12 victory and retaining the Koranda Cup once again. Blue Dogs Deliver Statement Performance: In the second match of the day, the Yale Blue Dogs delivered an outstanding performance, defeating Princeton’s B-side 58–0. Beyond the scoreline, it was the manner of the performance that stood out. The Blue Dogs combined relentless defensive intensity with dynamic attacking rugby, showcasing both discipline and creativity. Their dominance on both sides of the ball highlighted the depth within the Yale program and pointed to a bright future ahead. It was a fitting end to a successful day in New Jersey, as Yale demonstrated strength throughout the entire squad and continued to build momentum moving forward.

Marc Downes liked thisMarc Downes liked thisThe men’s team traveled to the Carolinas for their domestic tour, enjoying a welcome escape from the New Haven snow. Their first match saw them face top-10 D1AA side Clemson at an outstanding rugby facility. Despite falling 71–12 to a strong and well-prepared Clemson team, the group can take pride in their effort under tough, hot conditions against an opponent already deep into their preseason with multiple matches under their belt. The team also enjoyed a great post-match function with Clemson, rounding out a fantastic opening weekend. The tour then continued to UNC Wilmington, where the squad balanced training sessions with plenty of time on the beach. Their match against a big, physical Wilmington side proved to be a hard-fought contest. The game went back and forth throughout, with Wilmington edging a narrow 26–25 victory in the final moments. The tour was a huge success- strengthening team bonds while providing valuable opportunities for younger players to step into first-team rugby. It was a perfect mix of competition, development, and camaraderie, all enjoyed under the Carolina sun.

Marc Downes liked thisMarc Downes liked thisHaving spent so long at Harlequins, I’ll always take an interest in the decisions being made there, especially given where the team is from an on-pitch performance perspective. I try and take the emotion out of it by focusing on a couple of questions: - Does this improve performance? - Does it make the environment better day to day? There’s no doubt the club has brought in serious experience with Robbie Deans as Performance Director and Rob Hunter coming in as Forwards Coach. On paper, it can work. But it’s never just about the names, it’s about how it all connects. Where it could work: - There’s a clear intent to strengthen leadership. Bringing someone like Robbie in could add direction and experience at the top, if it’s implemented properly. - Gilmore stepping up brings continuity. He should know the group and the environment, which can count for a lot. - Bringing in Hunter is a direct response to a clear issue. The set-piece and forward play hasn’t been where it needs to be, so that’s being addressed head on. Where my concerns are: Clarity: There are a lot of roles now: Performance Director, GM, Head of Performance, Head Coach, specialist coaches, Head of Recruitment… The best environments I’ve been in are simple. Everyone knows who’s driving what, and there’s no confusion. Presence: Leadership is built every day, around the training ground, in conversations, in small moments. It can’t be something you dip in and out of. If your senior leader, in this case Deans, isn’t there consistently, questions will naturally follow. Pressure on Gilmore: It’s a big opportunity, but right now it doesn’t look like it’s working. His area, defence, is also where the team is struggling most. In that situation, you need clarity, authority, and backing from the players to reset things properly. I’d ask, does he have that? For me, this is less about the structure itself and more about what sits underneath it. I’ve been in environments where everything looks right on paper but doesn’t translate because there’s no alignment or consistency. I’ve also been in much simpler setups where everyone is clear, connected, and accountable. That’s where performance comes from. This is a huge moment for Quins! There’s clear intent to move things forward, but is this the right way to do it? I’m not sold but we’ll see. To be successful I think it comes down to three things: - Alignment - Consistency - Whether the players feel it every day That’s what drives performance. Not job titles or structures, but what actually happens on the ground. Let’s see how the players respond today in a huge game for the club against Bristol.
