Big data is collected on a daily basis from sources that include purchases, voluntary surveys, social media posts and Internet
search engines. The retail industry has been using collected data to develop analytics and insight to
support strategic initiatives for years. A recent instance in the insurance industry is auto insurers monitoring consumers’ driving habits in return for discounted insurance premiums.
Since the life insurance industry is in the early stages of using big data, there are some potential challenges and benefits for the two core parties involved: consumers and insurers. Insurance companies are using big data and analytics to streamline operating procedures and processes to deliver their products more efficiently. Consumers stand to gain from this efficiency both in the time to issue as well as the cost of the product. These potential benefits come with potential concerns for consumers’ privacy and permission to use sensitive data.
As explored through several examples in this article, we compare and contrast a traditional process for a life insurance company and an enhanced approach using big data and analytics. If implemented with care by a life insurance company, these enhancements may outweigh any potential disadvantages.Other authorsSee publication -
"Big Data” – What is it, how is it collected, and how might life insurers use it?

What regulates the use of consumer data? Does “big data” and applications of that data have a place within the life insurance industry
