Brad Doll shared thisMomofuku Ando was 47 years old. A credit union he was directing went bankrupt. Lost everything overnight except a rented house in Osaka. Everyone said he was done. “You're too old to start over." "Just accept your losses and retire." He didn't listen. Here's what Ando knew that everyone else missed: Losing everything was just losing property. The experience of failure had made him stronger. So he went to work in a shed behind his house. For an entire year. Alone. Sleeping four hours a night. Trying to solve a problem everyone said was impossible. How do you make noodles that taste good, last forever, cook in minutes, cost almost nothing, and stay safe to eat? Day after day, he mixed ingredients. Tested recipes. Threw away countless failed attempts. People thought he was crazy. A businessman playing with noodles in his backyard. Then one day, watching his wife make tempura, he saw it. Hot oil didn't just cook the batter. It removed all the moisture. Preserved it. That was the breakthrough. Flash-fry the noodles. Remove the water. They'll last for months. Add hot water back, and they're fresh again. On August 25, 1958, at age 48, Ando launched Chicken Ramen. The world's first instant noodles. People called it "magic ramen." They'd never seen anything like it. At first, it was expensive. Six times the cost of fresh noodles. A luxury item. But Ando kept improving. Kept lowering costs. Kept making it better. In 1971, at age 61, he did something even more remarkable. Invented Cup Noodles. Put the noodles in a waterproof container. Made it portable. Global. That's when instant ramen exploded worldwide. But Ando wasn't done. At age 91, he announced his next project. Space food. Spent four years developing ramen that could be eaten in zero gravity. In 2005, at age 95, his Space Ram flew on the Space Shuttle Discovery. The first instant noodles in space. Today, 100 billion servings of instant noodles are consumed every year. In over 100 countries. All because a 47-year-old bankrupt businessman refused to stay down. He turned losing everything into the foundation for building something global. He proved that your worst failure might be the setup for your greatest success. What failure are you treating like the end of your story instead of the beginning of your next chapter? What problem are you avoiding because everyone says it's impossible? Ando understood something most people don't. Failure isn't falling down. Failure is staying down. Your biggest loss might be your biggest opportunity. Your empty bank account might be your clean slate. Stop listening to people who think failure means you're finished. Find your shed. Solve your problem. Work your four hours a night. And never let anyone tell you it's too late to change the world. Sometimes the greatest inventions come from the greatest failures. Brad Doll shared thisIn 1982, he opened a gas station in the middle of nowhere Texas…. Today, people drive 2 hours out of their way just to use his bathroom. And he prints $1 billion a year doing it... Arch "Beaver" Aplin III had no idea what he was doing in 1982. He'd just graduated from Texas A&M with a Construction Science degree. No job lined up. No clear path forward. So he did what any reasonable person would do... Opened a convenience store in Lake Jackson, Texas. And named it after his childhood nickname ("Beaver") and his dog ("Buck"). Buc-ee's. People thought it was cute. Kinda dumb. But cute. Nobody expected much from it. Because let's be honest... Gas stations are commodities. You stop. You pump. You grab a Snickers and some nasty coffee. Maybe you use the bathroom if you're desperate enough to risk hepatitis. Then you leave and forget it ever happened. That's the business. Aplin saw it differently. He grew up watching his grandparents run a small general store in Louisiana. And he noticed something most people missed. The stores people REMEMBERED... weren't selling better gas. They were giving people a reason to WANT to stop. So while other gas stations were trying to get you IN and OUT as fast as possible... Aplin did the opposite. He WANTED you to stay. Fresh food instead of reheated garbage. Merch. Clean bathrooms. Even live music at some locations. He wasn't building a pit stop. He was building a destination. Then in 2003, he made the move that changed everything. He opened the first "travel-center" sized Buc-ee's in Luling, Texas. Walk into a Buc-ee's today and it's sensory overload. 120 fuel pumps outside. A 75,000-square-foot store inside. Aisles of beef jerky. Fresh BBQ. Branded everything. And bathrooms so spotless you'd think they were maintained by germaphobes with OCD. People take SELFIES in the bathroom stalls. That's not a gas station. That's a brand. And people noticed. In 2012, Buc-ee's won "Best Restroom in America" from Cintas. Yes, that's a real award. And yes, it mattered. Because it reinforced what Aplin had been saying all along. Clean, friendly, and in stock. Every time. No exceptions. By 2015, Buc-ee's expanded into Dallas-Fort Worth. By 2018, they opened their first store outside Texas. Today, Buc-ee's does over $1 billion in annual revenue. They've broken their own record for "world's largest convenience store" multiple times. And Aplin was inducted into the Texas Business Hall of Fame in 2023. All because he refused to treat gas stations like gas stations. Most people think gas stations are a commodity business. Aplin proved them wrong. Because when you obsess over the things nobody else cares about... You stop competing on price. You compete on experience. And experience always wins. Well, more than 10 million people have taken my emotional intelligence tests and 500 thousand have attended my trainings, so I have some pretty good data to work from. This list captures the little things that emotionally intelligent people do. And most people are surprised by the degree to which emotional intelligence comes down to the little things you do and say each day. Here's why these little things matter... 1) Emotional intelligence is about emotional pattern recognition, not just emotional awareness. It’s not enough to feel deeply—you must spot recurring emotional themes in your life (e.g., always feeling defensive with authority) and decode what they signal. Growth happens when you connect the dots over time. 2) These behaviors signal internal stability, not just kindness. Apologizing, empathizing, or forgiving may seem outward-facing, but they actually stem from a grounded inner world. You can only give others grace when you’re not ruled by your own emotional chaos. 3) Real emotional intelligence is boring in real time. There’s no drama. It’s the person who pauses, listens more than they speak, and quietly shifts behavior over time. Emotional intelligence often won’t get applause, but it builds trust like nothing else. Give the list another read. How many of the 7 things below do you do CONSISTENTLY? 7 SIGNS THAT YOU ARE EMOTIONALLY INTELLIGENT 1. You dissect your feelings You reflect on what you’re feeling and seek to understand why. You do the same for others—curiosity builds deeper connections. 2. You stay authentic Being real does not mean oversharing. You speak from your values, you mean what you say and say what you mean. 3. You practice empathy Before judging, you try to understand another person’s perspective. 4. You apologize when you are wrong Saying “I am sorry” isn’t about ego, it is about connection. You own your mistakes because relationships matter. 5. You forgive and let go Holding grudges weighs you down. You let things go, sometimes even before the other person apologizes. 6. You pause before responding You reflect on what you are feeling and seek to understand why. You do the same for others—curiosity builds deeper connections. 7. The data was brutal: - 31% of their time in meetings that could've been emails - 24% responding to "urgent" requests that weren't - 18% context-switching between tasks - 14% redoing work because they rushed it when tired Only 13% doing work that actually moved the needle. Here's what separates the 13% from the 87%: They don't manage time. They engineer it. While everyone else accepts their calendar as fate, these CEOs treat time like code ✅ Debuggable ✅ Optimizable ✅ Scalable They've learned what took me 15 years to understand: Time management is energy management in disguise. Your 4pm decision-making is garbage compared to your 8am clarity. Your post-lunch strategy session is 60% less effective than pre-lunch. Your "quick check" of email costs 23 minutes of deep focus. They protect their mornings like Fort Knox. No email. No Slack. No "got a minute?" Just them and their highest-leverage work. They've discovered saying no to good protects time for great. That every yes has an invisible price tag. But here's what really sets them apart: They end every day ready for tomorrow. - Setting tomorrow's top 3 - Clearing mental loops - Preparing their workspace So tomorrow starts with momentum, not chaos. Brad Doll shared this1 SECOND In January of 1989, my beloved stepmother Susan's life was taken in a car accident involving a drunk driver doing 90 mph in a 45 mph zone. Yesterday, my beloved daughter Tara’s life was saved in a car accident involving a safe driver doing 70 mph in a 70 mph zone. The difference between the two? 1 SECOND. You see, in the first accident, my stepmother's life was lost, my life was shattered, and my heart was broken, but my faith in Jesus was born. In the second accident, my daughter's window was shattered, but her life was saved, so my heart was strengthened, and my faith was renewed. If my daughter had left home 1 SECOND earlier, the heavy steel object that shot out from under the long-haul truck in front of her would have gone through her window and taken her life. But instead, it hit her steel windshield wiper with pinpoint-timing precision and her life was saved. What a difference 1 SECOND can make! Brad Doll reacted on thisBrad Doll reacted on thisI am thrilled to announce that I have been offered and have accepted the role of President for the Davenport University American Marketing Association (AMA) chapter for next year! I was introduced to the DU AMA chapter this past semester by one of my professors, Dr. Ward, and had the wonderful opportunity to attend two events with the group. On February 10th I was able to attend a networking event with the AMA of West Michigan. Through this event I was able to connect with and gain advice from a lot of brilliant marketing professionals, including Brian Scharp, MBA and Kenneth VandenBout III. Then on March 25th I attended a Grand Rapids Rise volleyball game with Davenport (and other) AMA members. We were able to get a behind the scenes tour at the Van Andel Arena as well as sit down with a panel of members of their social media team from both the Grand Rapids Rise and the Griffins. We had the opportunity to ask them questions about their marketing and branding strategy as well as hear a bit about how they got started with both teams. I also was able to represent the DU AMA at the Admitted Students Day in March. This was an event for incoming freshmen to come and check out some of the different clubs that Davenport has to offer. I was able to share some about my experiences so far with the AMA, which was a super fun opportunity. So far I have thoroughly enjoyed my time as a member of the AMA chapter at Davenport, and I am honored to step into this leadership role. I can’t wait to learn more about marketing and have more opportunities to network with other marketing (and aspiring) professionals!

Getting to be part of an organization that’s been building a stronger, healthier community here for almost 160 years is pretty special. The little girl who grew up as a gym rat alongside her basketball coach dad would be thrilled to know she ended up somehow making a gymnasium her workplace. And my 3-year-old is already practicing her Y pose!

Of the many insights from the recent 34th edition of The CMO Survey, perhaps the most interesting is the expected growth rate change in overall and digital marketing spend over the next 12 months, which is forecast to increase by percentages not seen since September 2022 despite growth rates slowing over the last 12 months. Overall marketing spend slowed from 5.8% YoY last fall to 3.3% YoY in this spring’s survey, but the marketers surveyed expect that growth rate to rise back to 8.9% over the next year. Similarly, digital marketing spend slowed from 11.1% YoY last fall to 7.3% YoY in the spring, with a bounce back to 11.9% expected over the next year. Despite the predictions of stronger overall budget growth, marketers expect slower growth for “spending on customer relationship management, brand building, customer experience, and new products and services,” with pessimism about economic factors overall. “Almost half of marketers are ‘less optimistic’ about the U.S. economy compared to last quarter,” the report says. “This is a 64% increase over the 29.4% that were ‘less optimistic’ in Fall-2024. The number of marketers who are ‘more optimistic’ has decreased from 37% in Fall-2024 to 31.2% in 2025. Inflation, new policies, and the potential for additional tariffs may be driving these more pessimistic views.” Another area of projected growth was in AI use, with the report finding that respondents use artificial intelligence or machine learning to optimize and automate marketing efforts 17.2% of the time this year, up from 13.1% in the fall and expected to increase to 44.2% of the time in three years (for a projected growth of 157%). “Organizations have made significant progress in addressing these implementation challenges: minimizing bias and ensuring fairness, investing in necessary hardware infrastructure, and reducing vulnerability to malicious attacks,” the report’s analysis says. “Smaller improvements were made in ensuring that the marketing strategy created by generative AI … is a good fit for the brand and target markets. What CMOs Are Thinking Last week, 1000s of CMOs met in Florida for ANA's Masters of Marketing (https://lnkd.in/g7NxY6je), one of the marketing industry’s biggest events to learn, connect, & wrestle w/one big question: what does marketing leadership look like in a world where brands & consumers are being redefined. If any CMOs from real estate were there, I’d love to hear your take. Here are some of mine: 1. CMOs are being pushed to innovate with AI not just to stay relevant, but to redefine leadership in a world where creativity and technology now share the same desk. If you run a brokerage or a team, that message is for you too. You need an active AI strategy, evolving & unmistakably your own. The time to build it isn’t later. It’s now. 2. The CMO role is expanding from managing marketing to leading transformation. Marketing isn’t a department anymore; it’s the connective tissue between creativity & business strategy. CMOs are being asked to orchestrate that evolution on the client side & leaning heavily into agency support to facilitate it. In real estate, your marketing leaders need more freedom & authority to shape how tech, brand, and the agent experience work together across recruiting, training, and client service & they need more outside support to do it. 3. Creativity & consistency still matter. The brands that win will be the ones that stay emotionally resonant & unmistakably human, not the ones who rely on AI to create everything. In real estate, marketing must be more of something we automate, delegate, or template. The strongest brands must treat AI as a tool to inform thinking, not replace it. Great marketing must still come from the brand & lean heavily into genuine storytelling that captures what people are really chasing: belonging and trust. I often sense that marketers in real estate still roll their eyes at “storytelling,” dismissing it as fluff & not realizing how powerful of a marketing device it is. I believe this because of what I see in real estate, identical marketing built around getting people to buy something rather than believe in or belong to something. The big takeaway of all is that AI won’t replace creatives; the creatives (and brands) who master AI will replace those who don’t. I can’t imagine that it would not hugely apply to real estate. ABM: ideal world v.s. messy reality. We like sharing big picture ABM frameworks, but reality is always messier than our diagrams may make it seem. 1. Integrated brand, demand gen & ABM programs In ideal world, you would have brand awareness and demand gen programs that are: - Aligned with the same ICP used by sales and ABM - Attracting attention and creating awarness of buyers in high value target accounts (before they start the buying process) - Challenging the status quo with a strong POV coming from real experts - Align content and messaging with the use-cases and challenges of those accounts - Provide multiple meaningful touchpoints over time on channels these buyers use In ideal world, your brand & demand gen programs would generate a pool of engaged ICP accounts, and ABM would source those accounts, accelerate demand capture, and increase win rates. But that's not the reality for many B2B companies. In reality, we need to: - Take the time to figure out the ICP - Map their use-cases and challenges with AEs and internal experts/SMEs - Create or repurpose content that will actually be relevant and attract the attention - Start from cold ICP accounts and drive targeted awareness - Develop multiple meaningful touch points from scratch But given the other real-world constraints (see below) - the only way you can make this work is by starting with a scoped down ABM pilot program: - 1 cluster mapped to one use-case - (Couple of) dozen accounts - Small dedicated team 2. Cross-functional teams In ideal world, you have a cross-functional team with dedicated sales resources. But the reality is often siloed teams where different units focus on their own KPIs and metrics: - Content - traffic - Demand gen - MQLs - Field marketing - MQLs - Client success - NPS - SDRs - # of lead gen touches & meetings booked - AEs - pipeline won 3. Lean, iterative workflows Ideal: - Focus on throughput: cold → engaged → convos → discovery → deals → won - To do that, we need lean, cross-functional, iterative execution Reality: - Deprioritizing activities without immediate payoff - Internal approvals, indecision, analysis paralysis and too many meetings slow things down - Teams focus on avoiding blame and polishing internally, instead of testing and learning from market feedback --- It's easy to claim what "real ABM" is and what isn't. It's also pretty meaningless. Reality is always messier. Quick fix for better visibility: • Add contextual internal links from related pages (not just nav/footer) • Use descriptive anchor text (match intent, not “click here”) • Confirm schema labels support the page’s purpose (Product/Service/FAQ/Article) • Make sure it’s included in sitemaps + not blocked by noindex/canonicals Want a fast audit? Loved Laura Cushing's take on a frictionless user experience. A solid customer service experience creates brand loyalty, which creates more engagement and increased LTV: “Whether it’s a push notification that you get on your phone or whether it’s the print magazine, it’s that ecosystem that customers care about and it can take one bad experience, one paper cut, one friction point for them to not come back to that content.” And the Hearst and The New York Times teams chimed in on the popular topic of engagement. And, in this case, engagement > scale. How can brands take their current subscribers/members and build off of their existing engagement? What products/services/new formats can add additional value and entice your existing members to pay more? If your team isn't actively thinking about engagement and the customer experience (and joining acquisition and retention teams at the hip), it should be!
