I had a blast on the panel with Kevin, Christelle Chau, and the legend Eddie Borrero. We spent our time tackling the messy reality of moving from "Data Sprawl" to "Data Control." The TL;DR from our session: Building AI is the easy part. Making it work reliably, securely, and at scale is where the real work begins. We’re moving past the hype and into the "practitioner" phase, where data governance is the star of the show. Thanks again to Cyera for the invite and for bringing together such a sharp group of leaders. Caroline Wong of Teradata (at 37:35) "Fundamentally, (LLMs and AI are) going to disrupt every aspect of our lives, at some point," from David Elston of Spacewalk AI (at 25:30) Companies and orgs that adapt to change will be able to take advantage of that, while orgs that don't will struggle to keep pace. "I do think that it's created a very good level playing field for startups." To the question of what is the risk of adopting AI too quickly, Stuart Evans of Carnegie Mellon University pointed out orgs should be thinking of the risk of *not* changing, esp. with the orders of magnitude of speed afforded by AI-assisted technology. Organizations have historically been organized as systems of record "and now it's systems of action we need to get to," said Evans (at 18:28). On the promise of AI to accelerate efficiencies, often "a lot of AI initiatives fail" at the point where the tech needs to meet the business processes because "there's some magical expectation for some unicorn AI company to drop in whatever they're doing and magically things are happening. And that's just not the case. If it's not very well-scoped and broken down," Iftach Ian Amit Gomboc AI (at 10:10) (Spoiler: None of the panelists would accept the lone position of believing that with AI advances, advantage goes to defenders - all agreed that advantage goes to the super-empowered attacker. Matthew Sharp reacted on thisMatthew Sharp reacted on thisThe AI Build-Buy Cycle Is Repeating Itself I'm seeing some patterns emerging around the AI Build-Buy Cycle. This of course is limited to my small view of the world of the cutting edge companies and their security teams but it's enough of a hint that I think it deserves a post. As Claude Code exploded on the scene we clearly saw an explosion of prosumers and enterprises enter the start of the build vs buy cycle. The pattern is the same as we went thru with cloud and is so consistent I can almost map it on a calendar (minus the time compression aspect): Month 1: "This is amazing. Look what AI can do" Month 3: "Why are we paying a vendor for this? We have engineers. Let's build it ourselves." (Spin up 100 parallel projects) Months 4-8: Massive internal sprawl. Every team builds its own RAG pipeline. Every workflow gets an LLM wrapper. You have 40 alpha-quality demos, three kind of work, none of them are trusted in production. Months 9-12: The honest reckoning. Outputs vary. Quality drifts every time a model gets updated. The eval framework someone promised never got built. Token costs are climbing. The team is now spending more time keeping the AI alive than shipping new things. Month 12+: "We can build it. We just don't want to manage it." Welcome to the buy phase. I am hearing this now from teams that are cutting-edge. Companies that have the talent to do everything themselves. They ran the experiment. Building a wrapper is easy. Operating a reliable, consistent, accountable AI product on top of a layer that changes every two months is a totally different problem. One most teams don't actually want to own. The right question used to be "can we build this ourselves?" The right question now is "do we want to be the team accountable for this every day for the next five years?" Those are different questions. Teams answering the second one honestly are writing checks they swore last year they never would. The moat is turning out to be not so surprising. It's consistent, reliable, scalable software that has accountability. What is "old" is now new again.

Your help desk is not. Attackers have moved on from breaking authentication. They are now targeting the workflows around it. Account recovery. Onboarding. Internal communications. These are the moments where a human makes an access decision without a policy to back them up. That is the new attack surface. Generative AI made this worse. Deepfake voice and AI-assisted scripting let attackers impersonate employees convincingly enough to persuade a help desk agent to reset an account or a recruiter to advance a synthetic candidate. The credential is fine. The process around it is not. We’re introducing the 𝗦𝗼𝗰𝗶𝗮𝗹 𝗘𝗻𝗴𝗶𝗻𝗲𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗜𝗱𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗗𝗲𝗳𝗲𝗻𝘀𝗲 (𝗦𝗘𝗜𝗗) 𝗳𝗿𝗮𝗺𝗲𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗸 designed to close that gap. It is built on four requirements: 1️⃣ Verification-in-Workflow: Route sensitive actions like password resets through a policy-controlled verification step before execution 2️⃣ Governed Human Interaction: Replace improvised judgment with bounded policy and evidence-backed approvals 3️⃣ Cross-Channel Identity Trust: Ensure risk signals from email and collaboration tools inform identity decisions made elsewhere 4️⃣ Measurable Auditability: Treat every sensitive identity action as a security event with a reconstruction trail We have analyzed two vendor approaches against this framework below: 🚨 imper.ai serves as a strong example of Verification-in-Workflow and Governed Human Interaction, focusing on contextual verification at the decision point itself (e.g., help desk recovery). 🚨 Abnormal AI is relevant to Cross-Channel Identity Trust, using behavioral modeling across email, collaboration, and SaaS applications to detect anomalous activity that can inform identity-centric decisions. 𝗔𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗣𝗿𝗮𝗰𝘁𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗲𝗿𝘀: Security leaders must inventory identity transactions that sit outside normal sign-in and apply the same rigor as primary authentication. The next phase of defense requires extending verification, governance, shared context, and auditability into recovery, onboarding, and other exception paths. Weaponize your data signals 📊 The companies winning in 2026 have automated omnichannel playbooks triggered by the right customer signals across sales, marketing, CS, and enablement. If you're still acting on gut feel, you're behind. 2. AI without alignment is just fast chaos 🤖 Every department needs a shared product value framework with the same message, the right pricing, and unified definition of value. Speed means nothing if your teams aren't rowing in the same direction. 3. Plant seeds while the soil is fertile 🌱 Competitive displacement happens long before a customer is frustrated. Use your data to show up in the quiet moments before there's even a fight to win. The best GTM orgs don't react. They anticipate. 💡

There is nothing bigger. Every cookbook published in the U.S. last year was eligible (thousands of them) and the Foundation just narrowed it down to three nominees per category. Kathy is one of them. House of Nanking: Family Recipes from San Francisco's Favorite Chinese Restaurant (co-authored with her dad, Peter Fang) is a finalist in the Professional and Restaurant category. It's the story of the restaurant her father built from nothing in 1988, the recipes that made it a SF institution, and the family that has kept it running for nearly 40 years. I've watched her work on this book for years. The late nights testing recipes. The conversations with her dad pulling out memories he hadn't shared in decades. The pressure of trying to do justice to a story that belongs to her whole family and to a city that adopted them. Watching the people you love chase something this hard, and then watching the world recognize it. There's nothing like it 🔥 Winners are announced June 13 at the Art Institute of Chicago. Whatever happens that night, she's already done the thing. So proud of you, Kathy Fang 🥇
