My 5-year-old jumped up to see the bunny, but he didn’t see it before it hopped by. He got upset that he missed it, and I found myself learning real-time from my own advice. I told him, “We don’t always catch the rabbit, but we can be ready next time.” Rewind to this morning. I ran into someone I’ve followed for years. But we were both with our families so I settled for a handshake and simple hello. Throughout the day I found myself upset I didn’t engage further. I replayed the interaction numerous times, rethinking what I should have done differently. Then it clicked at dinner. I just missed the rabbit. I’ll try to be ready for the next one that hops by. 📢 Next Generation MyCare: Phase 2 Rollout & Provider Webinars The Ohio Department of Medicaid is expanding the rollout of Next Generation MyCare beginning April 1, with Phase 2 including the following counties: Sandusky, Erie, Henry, Williams, Defiance, Paulding, Fayette, Fairfield, Licking, and Ashtabula. To help providers prepare, ODM is hosting a series of informational webinars to share details about the program, what it means for providers, and steps you may need to take ahead of the rollout. 🗓 Webinars will be held the third Wednesday of each month from March through August 🕘 9:00–10:00 AM Sessions will alternate between webinars specifically for Ohio Department of Aging providers and those for all other provider types. I've been lucky to meet a few healthcare heroes in my career - and one of those is Dr. Stephen Muething. Dr. Muething is the former Chief Quality Officer at Cincinnati Children's Hospital, and now leads special projects as a senior advisor. Dr. Muething and I connected a couple of years ago when I was a new product manager researching the patient safety space. He graciously spent time sharing his experience, and I learned about his career leading the cultural & clinical transformation at Cincinnati Children's Hospital for over 2 decades, turning it into one of the leading pediatric hospitals in the world. Spending time with him taught me what true healthcare leadership can look like. What it means to be deeply mission-driven, patient-oriented, and putting the health and safety of children above all else. I hope after listening you come away with the same feeling I had of wanting to be better and dream bigger in helping our communities get healthier and safer. In this interview, we talk about Dr. Muething's journey from being the first pediatrician in rural Batesville, Indiana (population 5,000) to helping transform how children's hospitals worldwide approach patient safety. One of my favorite parts was hearing about his leadership creating the Solutions for Patient Safety (SPS) network, which was based on this powerful idea: stop competing on safety. SPS now consists of 150+ hospitals and has prevented an estimated 30,000 children from being harmed in hospitals. His journey reveals some counterintuitive truths about healthcare transformation: 🔹 Sharing beats benchmarking: The SPS network's "all teach, all learn" philosophy created faster improvement than individual hospital competition ever could 🔹 Small-town wisdom scales: Understanding that "healthcare is really about people" became the foundation for systems serving millions 🔹 Beyond Psychological Safety: Moving from "safe to speak up" to "uncomfortable NOT speaking up" requires thousands of small, repeated actions—not just campaigns 🔹 AI's real opportunity: Not better billing codes, but creating "cockpit-like" EMRs that prevent normal human error from causing harm He also shared how they moved beyond minimum government metrics to create robust learning engines with hundreds of metrics - because when your goal is zero harm, you need the right data to drive continuous improvement. Cincinnati Children's is just getting started: Dr. Muething is leading a new initiative creating an expert network, so that hospitals across the world can learn from the leading pediatric operators and physicians on bringing top-notch quality and safety to their patients.
