The Michigan Community Service Commission is offering grants for Global Youth Service Day volunteer projects ranging from $150-$1,500. The #volunteer projects should be created and implemented by youth in response to #community needs. Young people up to age 25 must be involved in elements of organizing the volunteer project including planning, recruiting and gaining support for the project among partners. Projects can be held anytime between April 1 and May 12. Eligible entities include #nonprofit and #faith organizations, #municipalities, #schools and #universities. #Application Deadlines: Priority #deadline for first‑round funding is Feb. 27, 2026, and applicants meeting this date will be considered for the highest funding amounts. As Detroit welcomes new mayor Mary Sheffield, there is growing opportunity to elevate how we think about early childhood education across the city. Community-aligned education support and coordinated systems matter but so does clarity around one essential question: What does kindergarten readiness really look like? Across Michigan, we see models taking different approaches. In MidMichigan, a Pre-K Academy serving children ages 3–5 emphasizes evidence-based curriculum and intentional learning environments built around meaningful; student-centered interactions, all with the explicit goal of preparing children for kindergarten success. This raises an important conversation for Detroit. If kindergarten readiness is the outcome, we must ask: Who benefits most from a balanced literacy approach that intentionally builds language, vocabulary, and early reading skills before children enter K–12 systems? Detroit’s children deserve early learning environments that are not only nurturing, but strategic, evidence-aligned, and outcome-focused. Programs like Read by 4 Detroit invite us to strengthen early literacy foundations so readiness is not assumed it is built. This is not about replacing existing approaches.
