Doug Rich liked thisDoug Rich liked thisA few weeks ago at SKO in Boston, I was named Seismic’s North America Sales Engineer of the Year. Still a bit surreal — which is probably why it took me a few weeks to post this. This role is hard to measure. Most of the impact happens in the middle of deals. The back-and-forth, the problem solving, the moments where things can (and do) go completely sideways and you have to figure it out fast. This year had plenty of those. I’m genuinely lucky to work with AEs who treat me like a true partner in the deal, not just someone to jump in for a demo. And I’ve had a manager who pushed me to be better and had my back the whole way (thank you, Ankit Bhutada!). And to the customers — new and old — who let me get close to how their business works, that trust means everything. One thing this year reinforced for me: You don’t win as an SE by knowing the most. You win by staying close to the deal, understanding what actually matters to the business, and making complex things make sense in real conversations. Grateful for the recognition. Proud of the team around me Nowhere near done.

And if I’m being honest… I wasn’t where I wanted to be, physically or mentally. I could feel the drift. So on the 28th of March, 2022, I made a decision. Not a big public one, just a personal line in the sand. I changed 𝐌𝐲 𝐒𝐭𝐚𝐧𝐝𝐚𝐫𝐝. I decided I wanted to become a durable & functional person well into my 80s. And I simplified it down to one rule: “𝐎𝐧𝐞 𝐡𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐭𝐨𝐝𝐚𝐲 𝐟𝐨𝐜𝐮𝐬𝐞𝐝 𝐨𝐧 𝐦𝐲 𝐡𝐞𝐚𝐥𝐭𝐡… 𝐠𝐢𝐯𝐞𝐬 𝐦𝐞 24 𝐦𝐨𝐫𝐞 𝐥𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐫.” From that point on, every decision got filtered through one question: → 𝐃𝐨𝐞𝐬 𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐬 𝐦𝐨𝐯𝐞 𝐦𝐞 𝐜𝐥𝐨𝐬𝐞𝐫… 𝐨𝐫 𝐟𝐮𝐫𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐫 𝐚𝐰𝐚𝐲? Four years later, a lot has changed, personally and professionally. But more importantly, I’m far more aligned with the direction I want to go. Life moves fast. And it’s easy to drift without realizing it. Sometimes all it takes is a pause… and a decision to reset your standard. Every team has a handful of reps who just “get it.” They run better discovery, control deals more effectively, and consistently outperform. And for years, we’ve tried to scale that by hiring more like them or hoping others pick it up along the way. But tribal knowledge doesn’t scale. So we turned to data. We built dashboards, tracked conversion rates, and instrumented the funnel. And while that gave us visibility, it didn’t solve the core problem. It told us what happened, not how to replicate what worked. The real gap has always been in the moments that matter inside the deal. What’s different now is that we can finally see and shape those moments. With AI roleplay, reps can step into realistic deal scenarios and practice how they respond under pressure. But just as important, the system is capturing something we’ve never had before: pattern-level analytics on execution. Not just win rates or stage progression, but where reps get stuck. Where they lose control. Where top performers consistently do something different. It surfaces coaching moments at scale—across every rep, every scenario, every interaction. That’s the breakthrough. Because now you’re not guessing where to coach. You’re not relying on anecdotal deal reviews. You can see, with precision, the exact moments that separate your best reps from the rest and systematically close that gap. That’s shifting sales as tribal art to to sales as something observable, measurable, and coachable in real time. And once you can do that, performance stops being random and starts becoming engineered.

Doug Rich liked thisDoug Rich liked thisFortra Search, Avnir, and Zions Bancorporation, Rob Swanson brought together a standout group of leaders in Menlo Park (Park James) for an intimate evening of candid conversation, real connection, and a lot of insight with Thomas Bostick, PhD, NAE, PE and David Nour. A few ideas from General Bostick that stayed with me: Resilience is not endurance. It’s a system. Built to plan for disruption, absorb shock, recover quickly, and adapt to a higher level. Features may drive growth, but systems sustain companies. The best leaders and organizations don’t react to pressure — they’re designed for it. And in moments of uncertainty, decision velocity matters. You rarely have perfect information, but you still have to move. Adjust the objective, stay anchored to purpose, and communicate constantly to keep teams aligned. We’re all operating in environments where plans change quickly. The advantage goes to those who have built the structure, discipline, and leadership to adapt in real time. Personally, I’m grateful for leaders like General Bostick. Getting time in a small, intimate setting to learn, challenge ideas, and share a few laughs is something I don’t take for granted. Yesterday, at Rep. Monique Priestley's invitation, I testified before a Vermont legislative committee on the identity verification provisions of a draft data broker bill. One question from the committee cut to something bigger than the legislation: why do identity methods keep following the same arc? Certified. Adopted at scale. Then compromised, deprecated, or prohibited — while organizations are still running them. Knowledge-based verification is the current example. KBV — “What street did you live on in 2010?" "What's your mother's maiden name?" — relies on answers pulled from data broker databases. The problem: fraudsters can buy the same data. NIST explicitly prohibited KBV in its 2025 identity guidelines. SMS one-time passcodes were deprecated the same way a few years earlier. The underlying issue: most organizations have no one whose job is to notice when the field moves. Treating identity as a product — with real ownership, defined outcomes, and accountability for staying current — puts someone in charge of watching the field. When standards move, they know. I wrote about the SMS OTP deprecation arc in my book Mastering Digital Identity. KBV could be the next chapter of the same story.
