If a team of 15 can suddenly perform like 150… What happens to the org chart? Traditional companies stack layers: ICs → Managers → Senior Managers → Directors → VPs → C-Level. Each layer exists to: → Coordinate → Aggregate information → Translate context upward → Align execution downward But when AI handles coordination automatically? When data flows in real-time without someone summarizing it? When decision briefs write themselves? Those middle layers lose their structural purpose. I'm not saying leadership disappears. I'm saying organizations get radically flatter. The comparison: A 150-person company looks like: → 130 highly ICs → 20 strategic leaders A 15-person company looks like: → 13 highly ICs → 2 strategic leaders → AI filling every coordination gap in between The real threat isn't AI replacing you. On Saturday I posted about the $100k H1B fee prompting companies to expand their offices in India and Canada. Now let me tell you why the fee, in its revised form, may actually benefit America. TL;DR: price signals are better than lotteries for allocating scarce resources, like visas, to those who will make best use of them. Last year, 339k people applied for H1Bs and 120k were accepted (35%). The accepted 35% was selected *at random*, not based on merit (beyond the min bar). It would be hard for the government to stack rank 339k people. But they can rank themselves based on their willingness to pay! Those with the very best job offers can best afford the fee. And those who plan to stay permanently will undoubtedly be more willing to pay, which is good for the country. Coming here temporarily as cheap labor will become uneconomical. The $17b it's claimed to raise is also a meaningful amount of money, though it's probably an overestimate. It should also end American workers' concerns about cheap labor on H1Bs driving down salaries, though I think those concerns are already misplaced. There are downsides: - Rich heirs get an undeserved benefit (as usual). - Promising young talent won't be able to afford the fee and we may lose them forever, although a borrowing economy may develop, with other downsides. Indentured servitude is a real risk. - We'll see fewer foreign college students too, because we've broken the path from American college to American jobs. It really sucks for people who are in college on student visas right now, expecting to pursue an H1B at graduation. And because many colleges depend on foreign students paying full tuition to balance their budgets, there may be tuition increases for American students. - If the price is set too high, we may give out fewer visas than planned, depriving American companies of great workers (which may be the real intention, but if so, I think they set the price too low). We're talking about highly educated people with high salaries here, not refugees, so equity is a lesser concern. The originally announced plan, with annual fees, would have been as disastrous and chaotic as its rollout, and the fact that the law changed so abruptly will dissuade all immigrants, including the brightest, to our detriment. But the revised plan is actually pretty similar to what economists would recommend. So overall, I expect to see more experienced, higher paid workers snagging future H1Bs, with the intent to move here permanently, while younger immigrants will find themselves unable to get in the door (literally). In the long run that will hurt America and help other countries, but it will be somewhat balanced by the increased ability of the very best workers to come here.

Suggestions for H1B friends who are already their in US and not immediately affected by this 100K H1B fee: You are not safe just because you don't immediately need a renewal or travel outside of US. Companies will eventually make policies that impact all H1Bs. . You are lucky as you have some time to execute the below suggestions to come out ahead, while you still can: - Dispose all your assets in the US while there is still time. Do NOT delay this. - Start with hard assets like houses. Dont wait to maximise the profit. US housing market can collapse any time and H1B sell off can trigger it. The first movers will get out fine. Accept the first good offer you get and move to a small rental. Sell off useless furniture. - If your family members are dependents, send them back to India asap. Schooling can be worked out. - Buy an apartment or plot of land in India if you don't have one already. - Sell off expensive cars and get a used cheap car. - Move money from US stock market and invest in Gold ETFs in India. Unlike US ETFs, Indian ETFs have equivalent physical gold. This will protect your investment from US-INR conversion volatility. - Get out of crypto. Holding crypto while in India is going to be a regulatory hassle. - Avoid paying for expensive tuition in the US if your kids are not US citizens or expected to be GC holders by the time they graduate. There are good private colleges in India they can go to. - Apply for a role in GCC in India if your company has an Indian GCC or apply for roles in Dubai or Singapore or other GCCs in India. Being stuck in the US with no path to GC and unable to change jobs or visit your family is mental torture. Don't prolong the suffering. Wisdom is knowing when to cut the losses. .
