Fergal Madigan shared thisStripe Sessions was our biggest year yet, and it was a particularly notable year for the financial services industry. My personal highlight was hosting the breakout session “The Best of Both Rails” on how fintechs, banks and insurers can use fiat and stablecoin infrastructure to build more profitable businesses and better tools for customers. Joining me to share their insights as builders were Manuel J Godoy, CEO of Félix and Nader Souri Head of Coprorate Banking at BNY We had a further 7 breakouts and two networking events for the financial services community. In addition, in our keynote we highlighted how fintechs can build ther dev stack usng Stripe Projects and scale their back office globally with Stripe Treasury. Insurers discovered how to enhance collections and claims fraud monitoring with AI by using Stripe Radar. We also showed how banks are increasingly using lower cost stabelcoin infrasrtucutre to diversify revenue opportunities. Fergal Madigan shared thisStripe's annual letter dropped last week - getting twice as much press coverage as in recent years. One trend observed across 2025 that instantly jumped out is the rise in "Global by default" businesses. Suffice to say this is not the mood music we have seen in much of the international press recently - but nonetheless while Coca-Cola (20 years), McDonalds (27 years) and Starbucks (16 years) took a long time to extend beyond their home market AI platforms (OpenAI, Cursoe, Vercel, Anthropic etc). have launched globally scaled businesses from day 1. Instant expansion at this scale requires a new form of financial infrastructure, and stablecoin and on-chain finance are crucial piece parts in the story. While this is true at scale, arguably the more exciting development is at the level of individual founders. While we are an increasingly global culture, sub-divided into consolidating linguistic blocs, globalization for the most part is a story of large companies and the super rich. At a smaller scale, the single largest impediment to starting a business across lets say a Senegal-France corridor is an 5-8 day settlement window. Without the ability to get paid you can't have a business - even if you have all the other technological building blocks and the best ideas. This is the true potential of new financial infrastructure - not just "global by default" but "at any and all sizes of business." Fergal Madigan shared thisI spent much of the last few months on the road, and had the great fortune to be at the world's largest fintech events - Money20/20 and Singapore Fintech Festival. There were some clear and consistent themes across both: Stablecoins are past the proof-of-concept stage. Remittances grabbed early headlines, but there is also real momentum is in treasury and stablecoin acceptance. Neobanks, insurers, and corporates are exploring whitelabel issuance programs that deliver both speed and yield to treasury functions. We are also seeing stablecoin f2f/online payments soaring - raising the possibly of entirely stablecoin save/spend/store lifecycle. The question isn't if stablecoins work - it's where they unlock the most value. Agentic AI is moving from back office novelty to front office necessity. Banks are deploying models to optimize idle customer cash balances. Insurers are building LLMs with MGA licensing to automate quote/bind and premium collections. And across every sector, AI is redefining the fraud prevention vs. payment acceptance tradeoff - getting smarter at saying yes to good customers and no to bad actors. Banks remain divergent on tokenized finance strategy - and that's a good thing. Some are issuing deposit tokens. Others are launching whitelabel stablecoins. Many are focused on specific use cases: remittances, treasury management, or card issuing rails. This diversity will accelerate adoption by allowing banks to choose the business they want to be in, rather than launching a dozen table-stakes plays just to keep up. The key is to make your move fast. Regulators showed up with clear points of view. What struck me most was the presence and conviction of regulatory voices across both events. In this agentic AI and stablecoin wave, regulators are clearly keen to be part of the change - not just observers of it. This, it goes without saying, is extremely welcome. The through-line? The technology works. The regulation is clarifying. The question now is execution. Nicox has reset its financial footing at a critical inflection point—fully repaying secured venture debt and extending its cash runway beyond 2027 just months ahead of pivotal regulatory milestones for NCX 470. By retiring Kreos Capital’s secured facilities and replacing them with unsecured, non-interest-bearing convertible and ordinary bonds, Nicox removes asset encumbrances, eliminates board observer rights, and materially reduces covenant risk. The message is deliberate: preserve operational flexibility and strategic leverage as the company approaches a pre-NDA meeting in Q1 2026 and a U.S. NDA submission targeted for summer 2026. Why this matters: • A clean balance sheet strengthens partnering and licensing optionality • Zero-coupon convertibles trade near-term cash burn for future dilution, buying time to data • Runway now spans a full FDA review cycle and potential ex-US filings • Reduced debt overhang improves negotiating posture with current and future partners For NCX 470—a nitric oxide–donating bimatoprost entering a highly genericized glaucoma market—success will depend on more than regulatory approval. Differentiation must show up in incremental IOP reduction, tolerability, and adherence, or payer access will default to later-line positioning. With China and Japan partnered (Ocumension, Kowa), Nicox’s value creation path is increasingly tied to milestones, royalties, and regulatory execution, rather than standalone commercialization risk. Zooming out, this financing reflects a broader European biotech pattern: replacing restrictive venture debt and equity lines with flexible, insider-backed converts to bridge companies to high-value catalysts in a cautious capital environment. The open question is whether NCX 470’s data can support premium access in a cost-sensitive category fast enough to justify that time. FIS, Global Payments have announced a transformative transaction that reshapes the competitive landscape: FIS is acquiring Global Payments’ issuer business for $13.5 billion, a strategic play to expand its core banking services and deepen its capabilities in debit and card processing.
