It came from a book that immediately caugt my attention: “If It Ain’t Broke…Break It!” by Robert Kriegel and Louis Patler. The idea: the biggest risk is not failure. It is succeeding long enough with what works that you stop questioning it. That idea was radical at the time. In 2026, with AI restructuring every industry, every role, and every assumption we built our careers on, it is not radical anymore. It is survival. Guillermo Garcia shared thisWe spend a lot of time asking what AI can do. Nobody is asking the harder question: what are we — humans — actually here for? Most people never have to ask it directly. Work answers it. Family answers it. Faith answers it. Something gives the day structure and makes it feel like it matters. The question gets answered without being asked. What AI is threatening is not those sources of meaning. It is the conditions that made them feel stable. The social structures built around work are shifting. The pace of change is unsettling things people did not even know they were relying on. And for those whose identity was tied primarily to what they do — the disruption is already personal. We have seen a version of this in retirement. The freedom people dreamed about for decades arrives — and for many it feels hollow. Not because they had nothing else. But because one pillar was removed faster than the others could carry the weight. AI is bringing that reckoning forward, for entire generations, all at once. Four thinkers frame this better than anyone: Viktor Frankl — the last human freedom is the freedom to choose what something means. You can take away the job, the role, the plan. You cannot take away that. Gabor Mate — when people lose connection to others, to purpose, to their own inner life, the body and mind pay the price. A world of maximum convenience and minimum genuine connection is not progress. It is quietly devastating. Yuval Harari — the risk is not that AI makes us poor. It is that it makes us unnecessary without us noticing, because the replacement will be pleasant. Nick Bostrom — a world without problems to solve may be a world without meaning. Abundance without purpose is not flourishing. I do not think AI threatens human meaning. I think it makes it unavoidable. We could ignore the question before because we were too busy. AI is removing that excuse. Meaning is not something that happens to you. It is something you choose. That capacity cannot be automated. It has to be chosen. And in a world where AI handles more of the execution, the choosing becomes the whole thing. What are we for, in an AI world? The same thing we have always been for. To love. To contribute. There is a word for this skill: Metacognition. Thinking about your own thinking. Knowing how you learn, catching yourself when you are overconfident, adjusting when something is not working. Studies show it is the single strongest predictor of learning performance — stronger than intelligence, stronger than prior knowledge. And almost nobody teaches it. When you use AI without this awareness, two things happen. You hand off the hard part — which is exactly where learning occurs. And you lose the ability to judge whether AI is right or wrong. The real money in the gold rush was not made by the miners. It was made by the people selling picks, shovels, and blue jeans. AI is no different. Two places where value is actually being created: the infrastructure everyone needs regardless of who wins — chips, data centers, power, networking — and strong businesses in every industry that AI is making significantly better. Not AI companies. Just good businesses getting stronger. Three things that cost investors money: chasing the model race, confusing spending with returns, and ignoring what AI is disrupting in what you already own. Own the infrastructure. Own quality businesses AI makes more competitive. Act on earnings — not announcements. And for everything you already own, ask what AI is doing to that business. Not in theory. And yet — you cannot point to a clear, measurable, enterprise-level impact from any of it. You are not alone. The data says this is the norm. 74% of all AI economic value is captured by just 20% of companies. 29% of organizations see real ROI from AI — despite billions invested. This is not a technology problem. It is a leadership problem. Three things keep going wrong: companies add AI on top of how they already work instead of reimagining it. Governance arrives after the breach, not before. And leadership teams don’t agree on what they’re actually doing — 58% of executives admit their peers lack the knowledge to make sound AI decisions. The companies pulling ahead aren’t doing more with AI. They’re doing different things entirely. What does that mean for you? If you’re in the C-suite — stop sponsoring AI and start owning it. If you lead a function — build the governance before the deployment catches up to you. If you manage a team — your AI super-users are forming right now, with or without your involvement.
