Daniel Goldstein shared this72% of Americans don't feel confident they could manage a financial windfall. 83% don't think financial advisors have their personal goals in mind when giving advice. Put those two numbers together. People aren't prepared to inherit wealth. And they don't trust the professionals who are supposed to help them get there. We spend a lot of time talking about the mechanics of estate planning, documents, tax strategies, and trust structures. But the biggest failure point in the $124 trillion wealth transfer is far simpler. It’s relational failure… heirs who didn't know the plan. 80% of heirs leave their parents' advisor within a year of a wealth transfer because the relationship didn't extend to them. Some perspective for advisors: If you manage $200M and lose 80% of it over the next 10-15 years, that's $160M walking out the door. Treating estate planning as a product to sell is a mistake. It’s a trust-building conversation with your client. You either have that conversation or lose them to someone who will.

Daniel Goldstein shared thisWill ownership in America dropped 5 points in a single year. 31% → 26%. At the same time, trust ownership rose 3 points. In our own data at Trust & Will, trusts went from 22% to 41% of our direct-to-consumer orders. On the surface, it looks like fewer people are planning. But what’s actually happening is that the people who are planning are choosing more sophisticated instruments. A will is a one-time document. A trust needs funding, retitling, ongoing management, and updates as your life changes. The difference lies in an ongoing relationship. For advisors, you already know your clients are choosing instruments that require ongoing support—the question is how to provide it seamlessly and continuously. That means you have the opportunity to become essential not only to the current generation, but their kids and grandkids too. For platforms, it means that generating documents isn’t going far enough anymore. You have to guide everything that comes after. That's why we built and unified it all under EstateOS. We’re treating it as an estate management system that treats the plan as something that lives and evolves over time. Because that’s what trusts do.

Daniel Goldstein shared this62% of Gen X have no estate planning documents. That's higher than: Gen Z at 54%. Millennials at 58%. Boomers at 48%. The generation most likely to need a trust is the generation least likely to have one. Think about who Gen X is right now. They're the sandwich generation, caring for aging parents, raising kids, managing the most complex financial lives of any cohort. Many own homes, businesses, retirement accounts, and life insurance policies. Many are already named as executors or trustees in their own parents' estates. They’re overwhelmed. The complexity of their financial lives makes the planning feel harder, so they put it off. For advisors managing Gen X clients, if you haven't brought up estate planning, you're leaving them exposed. And you're leaving your practice exposed too. 82% of clients earning $500K said they'd switch advisors specifically for estate planning services. The generation that's about to inherit and pass on the largest share of the $124 trillion wealth transfer is the one with the least protection. That's a “right now” problem to address.

West was strategy, brand, design, comms, marketing, product, culture, business, fund and operations — all close to the work, close to the founders, close to the exponential expectations. Twitter, Square, Dropbox, Venmo, Impossible Foods, Anki, Prelude, Ro, Google, Jawbone, Rdio, and so, so many others. We pushed. We shaped. We launched. We accelerated. We stretched. We gave it everything. Anything was possible? sometimes. A few months ago, West closed. Some people thought I left years ago. Others have wondered why I stayed. A few of you know how my heart works. I loved doing every role for every kind of company. I loved the strange range of the work. I loved the unreasonable expectations. I loved the people. So much. I’m still the same non-traditional, hopeful, detail-obsessed, impact-oriented person — with an intimate understanding of the many paths companies take. And of course, I’m looking for the next ambitious thing, the next unreasonable expectation, and the next team worth caring a lot about. For my friends, coworkers, partners and co-conspirators: I’d love to reconnect — to talk work, talk what’s next, or just relive a few memories from the wild West.
