System Design Thursdays — Episode 1 Design Instagram (SDE-1 Interview Edition) Imagine you walk into a system design interview. The interviewer smiles and says: "Let’s design Instagram." Your brain immediately jumps to: CDNs Distributed storage Microservices Sharding strategies Pause. For an SDE-1 interview, that’s not what they’re testing first. They want to see how you think. So let’s walk through this the right way 👇 Step 1: Clarify the scope Instagram has hundreds of features. But in an interview, you should narrow it down. You could say something like: Let’s focus on the core features: • Users can upload photos • Users follow other users • Users can see a feed of posts from people they follow Simple. Clear. Focused. This shows you understand scope control. Step 2: Identify the main components Now break the system into basic building blocks: • User service (profiles, authentication) • Post service (uploading images) • Feed service (generating user feed) • Storage (images + metadata) At this level, you're showing structured thinking. Not overengineering. Step 3: The upload flow User uploads a photo. Typical flow: User → API server → Image storage → Database entry Images usually go to object storage (like S3). Metadata goes to a database: User ID Post ID Caption Timestamp Image URL Step 4: Feed generation This is the most interesting part. Two common approaches: Fan-out on write When someone posts → push the post to followers' feeds. Fast reads, heavier writes. Fan-out on read Generate feed when user opens the app. Simpler writes, heavier reads. In interviews, mentioning both approaches is a strong signal. Step 5: Basic scaling ideas At SDE-1 level, just mention fundamentals: • Use CDN for image delivery • Use caching for popular feeds • Use load balancers for API servers You don't need deep distributed system theory. Just show awareness of scaling challenges. What NOT to do in an SDE-1 system design interview ❌ Jump straight to microservices ❌ Overcomplicate with Kafka, Redis clusters, etc. ❌ Forget to clarify requirements ❌ Ignore trade-offs Interviewers care more about clear thinking than fancy architecture. Quick summary Designing Instagram (SDE-1 level): Clarify scope → Identify services → Explain upload → Discuss feed → Mention scaling. Simple. Structured. Thoughtful.
