In almost every initial call, I ask software engineers what drew them to Viam. A lot of them say some version of: “Robotics is interesting.” At the hackathon last week, it was pretty cool to watch those same engineers (many who had never worked with hardware before joining) build and operate robots. One request though...next time instead of salads, let's do nachos. I'll take mine just like I like my jokes: extra cheesy 🧀. Video below 👇

This month, we're highlighting Ray Liu, Sr Software Engineer II, for how he lives Affinity's company value of Practicing Respectful Candor. Ray shows that candor doesn't have to come at the cost of respect. From navigating high-stakes technical discussions to speaking up during incidents when the team may be overlooking key data, he consistently demonstrates that being direct and being respectful can go hand in hand. As he shares: "You can be direct and still be respectful. It comes down to how you communicate the message. Being respectful doesn't mean softening the message or avoiding disagreement. It can simply mean choosing the framing and language that keeps the conversation about the problem, not the person." Whether leading code reviews or encouraging teammates to share observations before they have complete certainty, Ray leads by example, showing that assuming positive intent is what turns candor into collaboration.

I CAN’T HIRE SR. DEVS!! If you keep publicly repeating that an intern with an AI tool is equivalent to a senior engineer, do not act surprised when your recruiting pipeline for senior talent collapses. Senior engineers are not applying for a coding job. They are applying for judgment, ownership, and the burden of making hard calls under ambiguity. Your public posture is a signal. It broadcasts how you price experience, how you assign accountability when things break, and how you will treat the people who carry the risk. And it hints at the decisions you will make during interviews, leveling, compensation calibration, and, later, incident reviews when the easy demos fail under real constraints. It is important to remember that hackathons are not real engineering, they are time-boxed improvisations that optimize for a demo, not correctness, maintainability, observability, or long-term operational risk. #AI #Engineering

We're hosting our second annual hackathon where engineers and data scientists build real solutions for Bay Area nonprofits over a single weekend. This year, six organizations brought us concrete technical problems they need help solving: Project Homeless Connect faces a 92% funding cut and needs a unified system to track impact and diversify revenue. The California Homeless Youth Project watches kids retell their trauma at every agency - they need intake automation. Point Blue Conservation has biodiversity datasets that could unlock millions in habitat funding, but researchers can't access them. The Innocence Center still processes wrongful conviction cases on paper. These are organizations with real data, real constraints, and real users waiting for solutions. How it works: Teams form on Saturday morning, build through the weekend, and present working prototypes by Sunday evening. Winners can choose cash prizes or project grants to continue working with the nonprofit to deploy their solution. Last year's winning team presented their solution at UN COP16 in Saudi Arabia. Another got into Y Combinator.
