It is becoming increasingly difficult to separate 𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗹 𝗼𝗽𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁𝘂𝗻𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗲𝘀 𝗳𝗿𝗼𝗺 𝘀𝗰𝗮𝗺𝗺𝗲𝗿𝘀 on 𝗟𝗶𝗻𝗸𝗲𝗱𝗜𝗻, especially around our job postings and outreach. Lately, I am seeing a surge of messages that all follow the same pattern: “𝘐’𝘮 𝘳𝘦𝘢𝘤𝘩𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘰𝘶𝘵 𝘰𝘯 𝘣𝘦𝘩𝘢𝘭𝘧 𝘰𝘧 𝘢 𝘧𝘢𝘴𝘵-𝘨𝘳𝘰𝘸𝘪𝘯𝘨, 𝘪𝘯𝘯𝘰𝘷𝘢𝘵𝘪𝘷𝘦 𝘜𝘚-𝘣𝘢𝘴𝘦𝘥 𝘤𝘰𝘮𝘱𝘢𝘯𝘺 𝘵𝘩𝘢𝘵’𝘴 𝘴𝘩𝘢𝘱𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘧𝘶𝘵𝘶𝘳𝘦 𝘰𝘧 𝘵𝘦𝘤𝘩𝘯𝘰𝘭𝘰𝘨𝘺. 𝘞𝘦’𝘳𝘦 𝘪𝘯𝘷𝘪𝘵𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘢 𝘴𝘦𝘭𝘦𝘤𝘵 𝘨𝘳𝘰𝘶𝘱 𝘰𝘧 𝘴𝘦𝘯𝘪𝘰𝘳 𝘱𝘳𝘰𝘧𝘦𝘴𝘴𝘪𝘰𝘯𝘢𝘭𝘴 𝘵𝘰 𝘫𝘰𝘪𝘯 𝘢𝘴 𝘴𝘵𝘳𝘢𝘵𝘦𝘨𝘪𝘤 𝘢𝘥𝘷𝘪𝘴𝘰𝘳𝘴 𝘰𝘳 𝘣𝘰𝘢𝘳𝘥 𝘮𝘦𝘮𝘣𝘦𝘳𝘴…” And shortly after, they ask for a phone number, WhatsApp, Signal, or some other 𝗼𝗳𝗳-𝗽𝗹𝗮𝘁𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗺 method of communication. We all know this is the new scam template - but they are getting better, and more convincing. As someone who uses LinkedIn legitimately to reach out to potential employees, this creates a 𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗹 𝗰𝗵𝗮𝗹𝗹𝗲𝗻𝗴𝗲. I now must be far more inventive with my outreach so candidates do not mistake me for one of these fraudulent messages. To make it 𝗲𝗮𝘀𝗶𝗲𝗿 for candidates to verify authenticity, I direct them to apply through our official job postings at 𝗬𝗮𝗯𝗹𝗼𝗻 & 𝗔𝘀𝘀𝗼𝗰𝗶𝗮𝘁𝗲𝘀 or on 𝗜𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗲𝗱 or 𝗟𝗶𝗻𝗸𝗲𝗱𝗜𝗻. But platforms are expensive to post on, and the volume of 𝗶𝗿𝗿𝗲𝗹𝗲𝘃𝗮𝗻𝘁 submissions makes it even more difficult. 𝗦𝗼𝗺𝗲𝘁𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗻𝗲𝗲𝗱𝘀 𝘁𝗼 𝗰𝗵𝗮𝗻𝗴𝗲. @𝗟𝗶𝗻𝗸𝗲𝗱𝗜𝗻 𝗦𝘂𝗽𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁, please take note: this is becoming a real business obstacle. Tools, controls, or 𝗯𝗲𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝘀𝗰𝗮𝗺 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘀𝗽𝗮𝗺 𝗱𝗲𝘁𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 would go a long way for companies who rely on LinkedIn to conduct legitimate hiring and business.
