21.1 KM. 13.1 Miles. 2:41:09.
Lessons from my First Half Marathon.
This Sunday, I ran my first ever Half Marathon (21K / 13.1 miles) in the beautiful wine country of Livermore, CA.
Until now, I had only trained up to 10K. I genuinely wasn’t sure if I would even complete it.
I finished in 2 hours and 41 minutes — and more importantly, I walked away with lessons that apply far beyond running.
Here’s what it taught me:
1️⃣ The right people expand your limits.
Jitesh and I trained together for many weekends. When I was in two minds about registering, he pushed me to do it. We even ran the first 7 miles side by side.
In business and in life, sometimes belief is borrowed before it becomes your own.
2️⃣ Mind over body.
It felt easy until mile 7. Manageable until mile 10.
The last 3 miles? My legs were ready to quit.
But the mind kept saying: “Just 3… just 2… just 1.”
Endurance is less about capability and more about conversation — the one you have with yourself when it gets uncomfortable.
3️⃣ Nature creates clarity.
Running through wineries, farms, and rolling hills reminded me how powerful environment is.
The right surroundings calm you, steady you, and keep you moving — just like the right culture in an organization.
4️⃣ Don’t look too far ahead.
While climbing a steep stretch, another runner gave simple advice:
“Just look a few feet ahead. Don’t look at the whole hill.”
That’s strategy in action. Big goals are overwhelming. Next step execution wins.
5️⃣ Community multiplies energy.
Thousands running together. Strangers cheering. Local residents encouraging every runner.
Momentum is contagious. Progress accelerates in community.
6️⃣ You don’t have to feel fully ready.
I had never run beyond 10K in practice. Preparation wasn’t perfect. Timing wasn’t elite.
But waiting for perfect readiness is often the biggest delay tactic we create for ourselves.
Progress > Perfection.
This race wasn’t about pace. It was about proof.
Proof that:
- You can stretch beyond your current benchmark.
- You can push through discomfort.
- You can finish what once felt impossible.
Whether it’s a new role, a bold business decision, or a personal challenge — you may never feel 100% ready.
Start anyway.
What’s a goal you’ve been postponing because you don’t feel “fully ready”?
