The Spring 2026 Design Division Lecture Series is in full swing! Our next event is an industry panel on Design for Physical AI on Wednesday, 18 March, 6-8 pm at California College of the Arts' main campus in San Francisco. AI is not just confined to screens; it is shaping the intelligence of the spaces we inhabit. This panel explores Design and Physical AI through sensitive environments and robotics, examining how AI can be thoughtfully embedded into physical spaces and everyday systems. Our panel of experts will discuss designing the next generation of intelligent environments and the expanding role of robotics across domains, from care and mobility to work, learning, and urban life. Speakers Include: David Webster (GOOGLE Labs), Leonardo Giusti (Archetype AI), and Chris Stoffel / ZOOX. The panel will be moderated by Elena Pacenti, Director of the MDes in Interaction Design Program at CCA. The event was curated by Shujan Bertrand (Chair, BFA Industrial Design), Elena Pacenti (Director, MDes Interaction Design),Erin Malone (Chair, BFA Interaction Design), and Justin Lokitz (Chair, Design Strategy MBA). So ready to lead my Summer studio at ArtCenter College of Design next week! OPEN TO ALL MAJORS STUDIO BRIEF: Design students will collaborate to create innovative solutions to support communities facing the risks and impacts of natural disasters in Southern California. With wildfires increasingly devastating areas like the Pacific Palisades and Altadena, combined with the persistent threat of earthquakes, this studio will focus on developing sustainable and resilient designs for the future. The studio will develop off-the-grid, self-sustaining spaces that integrate fire and earthquake resistance and well-being by using innovative materials and modular design principles. DESIGN CHALLENGE: The Los Angeles area faces real and present environmental risks, from the recent wildfires to the threat of earthquakes. This studio challenges student teams to explore regenerative design solutions for fire-resilient spaces, experiences and built environments. Beyond just providing environments and systems, your designs will incorporate elements that foster well-being. The designs will explore new technologies, sustainable materials, and systems that integrate fire-resistant construction. The aim is to develop designs that serve as models of resilience, while also enhancing the quality of life for those rebuilding their lives in the wake of disaster. The goal is to create outcomes that could be developed and implemented in the effort to rebuild in these types of disasters.

At CDFAM we aim to spotlight voices that challenge how we think about computational design and its intersection with AI. Few do this as effectively as Chris McComb, Carnegie Mellon University. When Chris first presented at CDFAM in 2023, he asked whether collaboration between humans and AI in design was even possible. Since then, his research has shifted toward building systems and workflows that must operate reliably in real-world contexts—raising questions of robustness, provenance, and the human experience. 🎨 Creativity + AI. My first Honolulu Tech Week 2025 event started with a powerful conversation between photographer Kwaku Alston and creative technologist La Mer Walker. They spoke about the shifts in art, creativity, and technology—how AI is changing workflows, how open-source models are empowering creators, and how artists can reclaim ownership and value through smart contracts and community. A few takeaways that stuck with me: 🫟 AI isn’t here to replace creativity, it’s here to expand it—if we choose to use it as a tool, not a threat. 🫟 The importance of artists maintaining ownership and building sustainable models around their work. 🫟 The reminder that innovation always brings disruption, but those who embrace it can find new ways to thrive. 🫟 Creativity is still, at its core, about passion, persistence, and community.
