Steve Robinson liked thisSteve Robinson liked thisWe have a lot of great #engineers enrolled in the Duke University Pratt School of Engineering #MastersofEngineeringProgram, and we like to tell those engineers that a great new product and a great new company "is more than a great technical idea". Great engineering has to be paired with conceiving of, defining, building and launching a business around the idea. These business fundamentals and more are the focus of the #BusinessFundamentalsforEngineers Course; which is a required course for most of the program's students. I am fortunate to be able to introduce students to some outstanding industry executives who have had great success building good technical ideas into successful products. One such executive is Beth Smith (retired IBM General Manager) who joined our class again on Thursday to talk about #investorfunding. (Beth is a board member of #RTPAngelFundLLC.). I want to thank Beth for frequently joining my class, giving great presentations and especially for mentoring students outside of class! Beth came to class in full North Carolina State University (her alma mater) regalia. Our MEng students put out a great welcome in their own regalia!!

Today I completed 28 years at IBM that honestly feels like I joined yesterday. What a journey it's been! Thought I will take a breather and look back and thank everybody and think about the journey, before I continue the journey. Starting as a Software Engineer in 1997, I've had the privilege of growing through every technical milestone - from developer to architect, Distinguished Engineer, and finally IBM Fellow. Along the way, I've been fortunate to witness the incredible transformations: from mainframes to mobile-first, from monoliths to microservices, from traditional IT to AI-driven everything. Some highlights that still give me goosebumps: > Leading the Apple+IBM partnership and building the iOS Garage > Pioneering connected car and IoT solutions in automotive > Driving hybrid cloud transformation across enterprise > Now shaping the future as CTO IBM Consulting Delivery With 75 patents and the honor of being both a Master Inventor and IBM Fellow, the technical challenges never stopped fascinating me. But what truly made this journey special were the brilliant minds I collaborated with, the complex problems we solved together, and the privilege of being coached by some of the best leaders/managers in the industry (Initially I started off tagging each one of them, but then the list was so big, I had to skip that). It's been a continuous, exponential learning through out the roller-coaster ride (though I am seriously scared of rides :-D ) To my IBM family—thank you for 28 years of learning, growing, and pushing the boundaries of what's possible. The friendships, late-night debugging sessions, and breakthrough moments will always be treasured. Sometimes it feels like yesterday that I started working at the Poughkeepsie office full time, other days it feels like a lifetime ago. As a former collegiate athlete, I'd like to think I trained for this - one sprint, one broken bone, one celebration at a time, and while I have certainly leveraged my training, teamship and leadership skills, I have also had to learn, build and re-build so many new skills. Along the way I've been fortunate to have amazing mentors and coaches guiding me, opening doors, and showing me how to navigate the ups, downs and everything in between. Thank you to a few in particular - Kieran McGrath, Nicole Anasenes, Marie Wieck, Bill Shriver, Beth Smith, Mary O'Brien, Barry Baker, Jerry Cuomo. I've also had the pleasure of working with colleagues, clients and partners throughout the world. There are far too many to name but I've equally learned from them, learned with them and worked through many tough business problems together (my favorite kind). 20 years has had its highs, its lows, its celebratory moments, and its difficult moments but I am grateful for each and every opportunity. As the daughter of an accountant that learned cash is king from an early age, I've also learned opportunity is worth its weight in gold. Open the door, see what's on the other side, you never know what it can turn into or who you may meet.

From IBM India, to assignments in USA, followed by roles across Middle East & Africa and now Asia Pacific, I’ve had the privilege of working with some of the finest professionals in the world: diverse, talented, and committed. Over these two decades, I have witnessed IBM’s incredible transformation, from our PC Business divestiture to becoming a global icon in Hybrid Cloud, AI, and Quantum, leading the world with cutting-edge innovations. What has made my journey truly special is our culture of integrity, trust, inclusion and innovation that defines IBM. The opportunity to collaborate with brilliant minds, embrace breakthrough technologies, and work in an environment where values matter as much as results, has been deeply rewarding. I am grateful for the learning, growth, and lasting relationships built along the way. Truly excited for the best days that is ahead of us. Great insights in here - especially at the end of the article where the rubber meets the road. I very much agree that proper visibility is critical. They are tying costs back to the individual applications. Key for visibility in their area. Right sizing so you are only buying things you need is critical. Understanding your costs so well you can predict your costs is a great standard. Also understand your costs on a per unit basis. It’s not just I spent $1,000,000 but I spent $1 a user where before I spent $10. Once you understand then grind those down. Find ways to stop paying for things you don’t need, and stop overpaying for what you do need. Please reach out if you want to learn about new ways to pay less to your IT vendors that don’t involve having to switch vendors or wait for contract negotiation or take on another projects. Many customers in the Federal space have complex disparate data across focus areas. Decisions are driven based on combining data sources, and making those decisions at the data level can help drive faster and more accurate answers for downstream applications and LLMs. In this blog post, Seth M. explores how "data gravity"—the increasing difficulty and cost of moving large datasets—exacerbates challenges, where applying complex business rules often leads to latency and infrastructure strain. To counter this, the Seth highlights an integrated approach using Corticon.js for decision authoring and MarkLogic as a data hub. Corticon.js empowers business analysts to build decision logic via intuitive tools like Corticon.js Studio: defining vocabularies from schemas, crafting rulesheets for conditional logic, sequencing via ruleflows, and validating with ruletests. This compiles into portable JavaScript for seamless deployment. MarkLogic complements this by ingesting data through Flux and triggering inline evaluations on document arrival, enriching records with decisions, audit messages, and traces—without any data movement. This preserves lineage, boosts throughput, and ensures a single source of truth. Key benefits include transparent, auditable decisions for compliance; reduced costs from eliminating data transfers; and enhanced efficiency for sectors like public programs (e.g., automating eligibility and claims). For LLMs and apps, an explainability dashboard visualizes policies and traces, while an AI-in-the-loop chatbot leverages Retrieval-Augmented Generation from MarkLogic to deliver grounded, context-rich responses.
