Timothy Quinn posted this“Salesperson” – A job and a title to be proud of! A few weeks ago, I had lunch with an old friend. We worked together back in the eighties as sales representatives for a tech reseller. Most of our time was spent discussing our co-workers, where they are now, how the company got bought out, and sharing stories of both sales successes and failures. We then discussed why people nowadays hesitate to be called Salesperson or Sales Representative. Both of us proudly recalled our own experiences being labeled as Sales Representatives. Back in the day, people at our company understood what we did and what our purpose was. Customers knew our objective and why we were in front of them. There was no ambiguity, no miscommunication, and no confusion. As for compensation, it was straightforward: the more you sold, the more commission you earned. Period. Being a sales representative is not easy, and it’s not for everyone. However, in my view, there is nothing wrong with having “sales” in your job title. I wore that title with pride, regardless of whether I was called a Sales Representative, Sales Executive, Territory Sales Rep, Regional Sales Rep, Sales Manager, Director of Sales, or VP of Sales. No matter the title, my objective was clear. Within the company, I had a quota, whether it was individual, team-based, territorial, country-wide, or company-wide. Outside the company, customers understood that I was there to sell them a product or service. I was also their single point of contact, their go-to person, the face and voice of the company, and I was the one they could trust or blame and sometimes even the "one throat to choke." Respect, whether inside or outside the company, was never given; it was something that had to be earned. We continued discussing how many people acknowledge that their job is in sales but prefer a more neutral title. Job postings often reflect this trend by using titles such as Business Development Manager, Enterprise Account Executive, Client Executive, Commercial Development Account Executive, Field Representative, and so on. I’m not saying that every job posting is hiding sales in the title, but many do. The reality is that if your primary job function and compensation package are based on selling something, then you are a salesperson, no matter what your title is. Ultimately, everyone in a company is a sales representative, from the entry-level administrator to the CEO and everyone in between. You're selling the company, selling its value, and most importantly selling yourself. I admit I may be a bit biased, but I truly believe that a person with “sales” in their title is a skilled professional with a purpose, as well as someone who is driven, goal-oriented, loves a challenge, and savors the win!

Timothy Quinn posted thisSales Success Starts with Mastering the Basics Recently, I’ve been diving into different sales strategies and methodologies. But here’s what I’ve realized: no matter how many frameworks you study, nothing accelerates your learning curve faster than mastering the basics and getting real-life experience in the field. That’s true whether you’re just starting out or already a seasoned “heavy hitter.” If you’re like me, you appreciate things in threes — so here are my top three foundational concepts that every successful sales rep must learn and internalize: 1. Who buys it — and why? Understanding the buyer’s motivation is Sales 101, but don’t stop at the surface. What are the top five most valuable features of your product or service from the customer’s point of view? Who has bought it before, and why did they buy? Real customer stories reveal real value. Who are our biggest competitors, and where (and why) have they beaten us in the past? Be honest. Know your battleground. 2. Who actually makes the decision to buy (or not)? Time is money — don’t waste it pitching to the wrong people. Learn from past deals: Which roles or titles were key decision-makers in other successful sales cycles? Yes, we all know the importance of champions, influencers, and executive sponsors — but how have those roles played out in real deals? Decision-makers aren’t always obvious. Sometimes it's a committee, a consultant, or even a third-party contractor. Know the dynamics in your industry. 3. What is the business value being addressed? Nobody buys anything just for the sake of buying. Customers invest in your product or service because it solves a real business problem or drives measurable value. This is related to “who buys and why,” but it goes deeper: the business justification behind the purchase is what truly drives the deal forward. And here's the twist: once you understand that business value, you’ll often uncover who the real decision-maker is. Thanks for letting me share this with you. I hope it’s helpful — whether you’re new to sales or looking to get back to the fundamentals that drive consistent success.

Having worked my way up and across through the organisation that was Kemp Technologies back in the day - and an important part of Progress Software's portfolio. The thought of being added as employee number 2 in the UK all those years ago - little did I know of the great times and opportunities which would lie ahead of me. I am proud for the distances I have covered all over the globe in the roles I have had - the people I have met, worked with and for those that have become more than colleagues - my friends for life. Through tough times at the start during early doors - a leap of faith with those who believed 'We Could Do This!' - building the need, establishing a presence in the market, strengthened through acquisitions past and present, along with role and management changes as the years tick on. I am privileged to have taken these steps through my career. Continuing to use my knowledge and skills to influence opportunities to become a better entity in my field. A big "Thank You" to you all for the 14 years in this seat and for the belief that we are still able and capable of generating good results together - long may it continue. Here's to another successful year ahead - Have a great weekend all!

It’s been an incredible experience—full of excitement, growth, and most importantly, amazing people from all around the world. I’m truly proud of what we’ve achieved together as a team. Now it’s time for a new chapter. I’m excited about the challenges ahead and what comes next.

Timothy Quinn liked thisTimothy Quinn liked thisAfter four decades in the corporate world — starting all the way back in 1984 — I’ve decided it’s time to step back from the day‑to‑day intensity and move into a new, more balanced chapter. It’s been an incredible ride through technology leadership, engineering, operations, SaaS, MSPs, global teams, and more “urgent escalations” than any one person should reasonably experience. Holidays, late nights, early mornings, marathon war‑room sessions, last‑minute onsite scrambles — all in the name of delivering exceptional customer experiences. Through it all, I’ve had the privilege of working alongside amazing people at CA Technologies, Tangoe, Trackforce Valiant, TRUE, and most recently HOCS Consulting. The projects were exciting, but the people were what made it all worthwhile. I’m genuinely grateful to every colleague, mentor, partner, and customer who crossed my path. I’ve also been fortunate to witness many former colleagues and friends advance in remarkable ways, achieving impressive milestones and thriving in their careers. Their accomplishments are a source of genuine pride for me, and seeing their growth has been one of the most rewarding parts of this journey. Thank you for the trust, the collaboration, the challenges, and the laughs — especially during those moments when everything seemed to break at once and we somehow pulled it off anyway. This next phase is about creating a little more space — more time for family, more time for things I’ve postponed for years, and a pace that doesn’t involve back‑to‑back meetings or late‑night war rooms. I’ll still stay engaged in ways that energize me… and while I’m stepping back from the corporate pressure cooker, the door isn’t closed. Consulting, fractional leadership, or even the right opportunity may still find their way into this next chapter. To everyone who’s been part of this journey: thank you. Your support and friendship have shaped not just my career, but who I am. I’ll be cheering you on — with a much more flexible schedule. Here’s to new beginnings, new adventures, and whatever comes next.

Timothy Quinn liked thisTimothy Quinn liked this44 years ago this week, I started my first “on the books” job stocking the pet food aisle at King Kullen to pay for college. Four years later, I started as a summer intern at Computer Associates and navigated 24 years of chaos. After brief stops at Accenture and InsideEdge, I built a network at Johnson & Johnson, where I found my niche of executive and organizational communications for the past 12 years. Today, I close my professional chapter so I can bring more focus to my most important (and challenging) role of caregiver. What a journey it’s been. From first in my family to go to college, summer intern, tech writer, HR and comms executive, and finally, consultant. To the mentors, colleagues, and friends I met along the way—thank you for making the ride so memorable. On to the next chapter!
