It constantly feels like there are deep domain experts who need a technical cofounder, strong builders who haven't found the right climate problem yet, and people coming in from other industries ready to work but not sure where to start. And people's default instinct is to found with someone they already have shared backstory with, which closes off a huge number of potential cofounders to them. Every year SF Climate Week brings thousands of us to the same city for the same week, and there's nothing specifically designed to actually connect cofounders. I've felt this gap for several years now—I guess that means it's my job to fill it. So for SF Climate Week (April 18–26) I'm planning to host a cofounder matching event, with software I'm building that hopefully makes it work amidst the chaos of climate week. ~60 screened climate founders and aspiring cofounders, matched algorithmically across multiple structured 1:1 rounds over a morning. Not a mixer. Not a panel with networking tacked on. A system created to maximize the odds that you meet the person you should be building with. The matching engine uses profile enrichment and pairwise scoring to generate optimized pairings, then reoptimizes in real time as rounds progress, handling no-shows and early departures, and surfacing mutual-interest follow-up signals to improve each successive round. The goal is to compress months of searching into a morning. The claim is a bit over the top. We are definitely still learning this parenting gig. But we think we have one thing figured out. Phil Levin and I weren’t trying to “hack parenting.” We were trying to build a life where we could be happy. And the research is pretty consistent: happiness is built on high-quality relationships. So we asked a simple question: How do you make good relationships as easy as possible? Our answer became what we call the obvious truth: Live near people you love and admire. Eight years ago, Phil Levin and I started a small “compound” in Oakland called Radish. Today it’s 20 adults, 8 kids, 10 homes. Our friend Gillian Morris just published a beautiful NYT Op-Ed about our lives today. (Link in comments.) + We each have our own homes (and kitchens). + Most nights we come together for dinner at 7:30. + We watch each other's baby monitors so parents can still have a social life. + We hot tub. Phil put it best: “People talk about the first year of having a kid as extraordinarily challenging. I feel like a bit of a jerk for saying this, but it’s been much easier than advertised for us. Tommy Leep liked this👀 🫧 💰Tommy Leep liked this🌊 Goldman Sachs just told 19% of all listed companies they have a water problem. However, the bigger number is missing from their chart. Goldman Sachs Asset Management's April 2026 report on water stress is probably the cleanest piece of physical-risk analysis I've read from a major bank this year. The framing is calibrated, not catastrophist. And the numbers do the work. 📊 For example, one in every five dollars of revenue across the listed market depends on water. Closing the global infrastructure gap takes $13.2 trillion by 2040 (World Economic Forum). The world currently invests $380 billion a year. That number needs to more than double. 🚰 Meanwhile, 30% of the water we already produce never reaches the customer. It leaks out of the pipes on the way there, illustrating how broken the existing engineered base already is. Good thing Goldman wants us to double the spending on it. 🌾 The other pressure point is food. Agriculture accounts for 70% of freshwater withdrawals, and more than half of global food production occurs in regions where water storage is declining. Three-quarters of the world's population lives in countries classified as water-insecure. Goldman's conclusion that this isn't an emerging theme anymore: the question their clients ask is no longer whether to invest in water, but how. It looks like water has crossed into mainstream allocation territory, as climate did between 2018 and 2020. Scientists and economists flagged all of this 15 years ago. Most of corporate finance read the executive summary and quietly move on. This report closes that loop. 💡 Here's what Goldman defines, in their own words, as water dependency: The reliance of business operations on four services: regulating water flow, supplying it, purifying it, and controlling floods. But wait, those are pure ecosystem services. 🌍 Wetlands regulate flow. Watersheds and aquifers supply. Soils and forests purify. Coastal wetlands, mangroves, and floodplains control floods. 💚 Nature is infrastructure. By definition. It's the largest, oldest, and most widely distributed water system on the planet, and it has been delivering all services for free throughout the entire history of human commerce. However, across every balance sheet referenced in their report, those systems (still) sit at zero. And so the $13.2 trillion gap is the bill for an asset class that was always there but never made it on the books. 🌳 The world's largest water utility is a living system. Tommy Leep liked thisTommy Leep liked thisOver the last month, we visited AI-native companies across San Francisco to watch how they work. What we saw made us alarmed at how quickly organizational structure is being rewritten, and energized by how much power these tools are putting into the hands of people willing to build. Across five companies visited in a single day, we found exactly one full-time product manager. At one of them, there were 40 employees. Engineers are talking to customers daily and owning product decisions end-to-end. The PM isn’t being augmented here; the role is being absorbed into engineering and design. Whether that’s a feature or a bug of this new era is still being decided. With this role collapse, a natural question arises: when you can build anything a customer asks for in a day, what stops you from building everything? Multiple founders named this as their biggest strategic risk. We call it the feature factory problem: speed of execution becomes its own trap, and the product slowly becomes a Frankenstein assembled from customer requests rather than a coherent vision. Every company had a different answer. Some constrain the system itself: one company’s agents can only configure existing features through JSON and literally cannot write new application code. Others constrain decision-making: one funnels all product decisions through a single individual, while another uses squads of engineers, designers, and product leaders with north-star metrics to evaluate agent-generated product choices. When execution becomes cheap, taste becomes the moat. Slack, GitHub, and Linear appear to be emerging as the coordination layer for software agents. Everything else is in flux. Engineers are mostly living in Claude Code, sometimes using Codex for coordination. What’s notable is how little loyalty exists toward any particular tool. The most underestimated shift is what AI is doing for non-engineers. An enterprise account manager had asked product for months to automate account uploads. No one prioritized it. She asked an AI agent in Slack; it was done in an hour. A chief of staff is producing marketing materials in under 30 minutes. The person most bottlenecked by engineering access may now be the one moving fastest. This extends to experimentation itself. A designer generates competing iterations across separate tabs in under six minutes. Some companies simulate customers before real ones ever touch the product. Others are running hundreds of research interviews in a week instead of 50 in a quarter. These companies are iterating 3–5x faster, either by compressing a single experiment or by running many in parallel. In both cases, the surface area of unknowns gets covered faster. Knowledge compounds. The AI-native company is not a normal company with AI tools. The gap between companies that have internalized this way of working and those still debating “AI strategy” is widening every week. If you’re a founder building this way, we’d love to hear from you.

I am not putting down the pipette just yet, but while I continue to pipette with one hand, I’ll be trying my other hand at being a Woman In Business. My outward-facing job now is to help us connect and partner with companies trying to make their proteinaceous dreams come true at commercial scale. (If that’s you or anyone you know, let’s talk!) I feel very excited and grateful to be here. A year and a half ago, I arrived in SF somewhat burnt out, jaded by years of experimental struggle in my PhD. (The first time I set up a PCR from yeast genomic DNA, I ran an annealing temp gradient out of habit, bracing for the usual round of troubleshooting, which Ruby Yu saw and said: "ah yes, I see you have human genome trauma.”) But in 14 months we’ve generated the data of my entire 8-year PhD about 7 times over. We're cranking, and every cycle builds effectively on the last. We keep setting goals and actually hitting them. I’ve never felt so much momentum in research. What’s the difference? It’s not just an easier model organism. It’s how the whole team touches every experiment. It's working with people whose combined expertise and energy is equal to the challenge we’re taking on — who support and witness and uplift and value each other. It’s a working environment of kindness, empathy, and respect for people’s lives outside the lab. For any of this to deliver max potential, home energy devices need to talk to each other, and to the broader utility network. The alternative is a fragmented mess that's (1) a pain for homeowners and (2) leaving cost-effective distributed capacity on the table for the grid we all pay for. We're excited to continue collaboration with the PG&E team in advancing interoperability for grid-edge tech – from AMI 2.0 data sharing to V2H coordination. I’ve come to believe that early experiences carry disproportionate weight - far more than we often acknowledge. For designers and builders, “minimum viable” may suffice for validating core functionality, but it rarely earns trust or sparks genuine delight. While velocity matters, I’ve always struggled with the notion that early versions should be merely viable, especially in a world where attention is scarce and emotional resonance is everything. This extends beyond product. Do you show up as the minimum viable version of yourself in your work, your relationships, your craft? I would encourage you to challenge the conventional MVP framework. Replace it with the Minimum Awesome Product. This doesn’t mean it’s fully-featured or pixel perfect. But it should be worthy of attention. Memorable, even evocative in the way it triggered emotion. The kind of product that prompts someone to say, “I didn’t know I needed this, but now I can’t live without it.” You can refine mechanics over time, but the emotional experience of a first interaction is singular and unrecoverable. Don’t settle for viability. Build something worth remembering… and make it awesome! ❤️🔥

founders that have only ever worked within a large company tend to be empty vessels. the most valuable skill at a big company is identifying who has (or could soon have) power and then aligning with and advocating for their ideas as if they were your own. take a spin through the recent YC class and you see a pattern of big company mids all founding the same AI for xyz... its not really their idea, it just sounds good. the board meetings will be especially painful. founders acting like they work for the investors, seeking approval, lost in the woods. there are exceptions. but they tend to be founded before zirp. when founding a company was hard and low prestige and there wasn't capital at every turn. an empty vessel doesn't jump into the abyss without first raising a $5m round from the 9 figure 'seed firms'.

Don't Build a Better Wheat Farm" - Why Defensibility Stakes Are Higher in Deep Tech Just published a new piece on my "Ignore the Confusion" blog, building on thoughtful insights from Eric Ver Ploeg at Tunitas Ventures about startup defensibility. Eric's core thesis: Too many startups pitch like wheat farmers - "huge TAM, slow incumbents, growing market, domain expertise" - but fail to think through long-term defensibility until it's too late. From a deep tech perspective, the stakes are even higher: ** Unlike software, deep tech founders must commit to defensibility strategies from day one - their funding depends on it ** Patent vs. trade secret decisions are often difficult to reverse and shape your entire competitive strategy ** Even "picks and shovels" providers (the tools that make industries more efficient) become commodities without proper moats The key insight that resonates: Defensibility can't be retrofitted. Whether you're building software or deep tech, your moat must be architected into the business model from the start.
