One of the best panels I have attended and not just because Jenn Rendon was moderating. Takeaways: Many other women are carrying the mental load and feeling like we are always the go-to for our households. Capacity building is necessary to maintain sanity and self-care, something that I have been neglecting since I became a mom. Everyone has their own song to harmonize. Find yours. We are all striving to be the best employee, leader, and mom…and we can’t be everything to everyone all the time. (Another toxic mindset I need to fix) Once a month, have a pampering day. We need it. How you show up is where opportunity will find you. How are YOU portraying yourself in your mind? Be intentional with how you spend your time. Consider a career or personal coach to guide you if you’re feeling uncertainty with your job. Change your rhetoric. Do you really HAVE to do that? With all of the news of new colleges of computing these days, I find it all the more incredible to think that Georgia Institute of Technology has had a College of Computing at Georgia Tech for 35 years now. In 1990. Years before the commercial Internet, even. While I don't know the full history of the establishment of the College, I remember hearing stories about how the restructuring was quite controversial at the time. I can only imagine what those faculty meetings must have been like. Even I remember when I started there as an assistant professor in 2006 thinking that the structure was pretty unusual, and as a fresh Ph.D. graduate I really couldn't wrap my head around it. The thought of CS in a completely separate unit of the university from EE seemed utterly foreign to me at the time. But so many faculty there, including and especially Ellen Zegura, sold me on the College, saying how advantageous this structure was. I took a leap of faith at the time but over time it has become increasingly clear to me how right she was about this (and many other things). Organizational structure is critical for innovation, in scholarship as it is in anything. I think it is one of the reasons Georgia Tech has been able to remain so agile in thinking about CS over the years, from the Online MS in CS program, to the Threads curriculum, to more recently the School of Cybersecurity and Privacy at Georgia Tech. The more experience and perspective I accrue, the more impressed I am that Georgia Tech did this so early, and even moreso that they pulled it off in the face of what must have been incredible resistance at the time.
