Qasar Younis is the co-founder and CEO of Applied Intuition—which brings AI to vehicles, like tractors, planes, submarines, mining rigs, cars, and more. The company is valued at over $15B, with 18 of the top 20 global automakers (and the U.S. Department of Defense) as customers. As Qasar shared, "not many people run a $15B+ physical AI company with revenue and free cash flow. And by not many, I think literally zero other people." And Qasar's personal story is wild: Born on a farm in Pakistan. Emigrated to the U.S. and grew up in Detroit managing engine lines at GM. Harvard MBA. Became COO of Y Combinator (during the era that funded OpenAI, Cruise, DoorDash, and Coinbase). Then left to start Applied Intuition in 2017. Yaser Khalighi reacted on thisYaser Khalighi reacted on thisTomorrow, the City of Vancouver has a chance to back local businesses, make streets safer, and show that Canadian-led innovation starts and belongs here. The City Council will vote on a program to allow autonomous sidewalk delivery robots, including ours at Serve Robotics. For me, this is personal. Vancouver is home to me. It’s where I went to university, learned about robotics, got my undergraduate and graduate degrees, and founded my first startup. Vancouver is also home to incredible local businesses, from my favorite Taishoken Ramen in Downtown that introduced me to ramen, to the amazing Persian cuisine at Delara Restaurant in Kitsilano, and of course my weekly breakfast at Patisserie Lebeau… these businesses give neighborhoods their character, create local jobs, and keep dollars close to home. Roughly 90% of the merchants we work with are small, independent businesses. Our robots can help businesses like these make nearby delivery more affordable and accessible, keeping commerce local. They replace short car trips and get cars off the road, which aligns with Vancouver’s Vision Zero objective: eliminating traffic fatalities and serious injuries. Serve robots have less than 1 / 1000th of the kinetic energy of a car, and have operated since 2019 with a stellar safety record of never causing a serious injury. Reducing car trips also can help reduce traffic in Canada’s most congested city, electrify transportation and reduce emissions, while supporting the local economy. And Serve's robots also create local jobs in robotics, mapping, and field operations. This vote is a chance to put our elbows up, re-energize Vancouver’s business community, and make room for Canadian-led innovation that improves daily life. I’m calling on the Council to vote yes. You know what’s cool? A billion dollars.” The Social Network played a small but meaningful role in my decision to immigrate to the U.S and start building. Since then, it’s been a journey of creating multiple companies, learning the hard way, and staying in the game. How can we leverage GPU computing to solve MDO problems? Our group has been working on building a framework to address this problem. Our framework includes implicit MDO formulations that enable concurrency, algorithmic differentiation for first and second derivatives, Python-side code generation for serial, OpenMP and CUDA backend kernels, and integration with other established MDO frameworks. We've integrated these ideas into Amigo, a new tool for implicit MDO on HPC. We're releasing it open source with a paper that will be presented at #SciTech 2026. NTSB has a preliminary description of the Waymo robotaxi colliding with a student pedestrian in Santa Monica. The diagram provides useful insight into how it happened. The student seems to have crossed mid-block instead of using the available marked crosswalk at the end of the block. But then again, this was a 9-year-old student and it is an elementary school, so such activity should not be a complete surprise. We also do not know if that is a customary behavior for other students in this scenario, which would be something accounted for by human drivers participating in the cultural experience that is "drop-off line". The student was crossing from a vehicle in the opposite-direction travel lane as the robotaxi. It is worth paying particular attention to the boundaries of the school speed limit, as well as the proximity to the school. The collision occurred just after the transition from 15 mph to 25 mph, with the robotaxi going 17 mph. Based on this analysis that is below the legal speed limit, but speed appropriate for context is an additional determination that is still pending. One fact of interest is that the robotaxi was there because it had just "completed a passenger drop-off ... at the stop sign in front of an elementary school". (Wondering how old that passenger riding solo was arriving at an elementary school .... but that potential issue is unrelated to the collision.) Thanks as always to NTSB for their rigorous approach to investigations. Worth noting as well that Waymo, as a party to the investigation, would not be expected to comment in an ongoing investigation.
