MIDiA is excited to announce our first ever mid-year recorded music figures. Clients can access the full report and data. Here are some key takeaways: 🌍 Global recorded music revenues, inclusive of expanded rights, grew to $18.3 billion in the first half of 2025 📈 Streaming continued to increase its share of revenue 🛑 Market growth is slowing, with H1 2025’s 5.9% growth slower than in the first halves of both 2023 and 2024 💵 Growth not only slowed in percentage terms, the absolute amount of revenue added was also smaller 💨 DSPs were the fastest-growing part of the music industry in H1 2025, adding more than twice the revenue added by the rights companies tracked by MIDiA 🎧 This is a major swing since the first half of 2022 when DSPs added only a third as much as the rightsholders did Although there are various caveats and specific company-level factors at play, the overall direction of travel is of a value shift across the streaming value chain towards DSPs. FRANKLY, THIS IS JUST A LOAD OF BOLLOCKS. I genuinely LOVE what Roblox COULD be. Love it. The 10-year-old me, sitting with my Atari VCS and then my Commodore Corporation 64, imagined this was the experience I was having, despite the computing power at my disposal being able to deliver just a single very short line of text in today's terms. Can you imagine how what children have today would have felt if we (read: Gen Xers) had experienced it then? Is it any wonder they love it? I'd have absolutely bloody loved it. BUT HERE'S THE THING... The me of today, the me that has worked with children for 35 years, as a teacher, a marketer, a builder of digital and physical experiences that put children in the middle of self-directed action, is deeply, deeply concerned. I just don't think Roblox actually cares. Yes, they care about their quarterly reporting, and they appear to care about their reputation, but they do not care about the children. I know individual experiences on the platform do - and it is important to make this distinction. But this kind of nonsensical announcement: establishing an inaugural parent council, where a handpicked group of individuals checks in for 2 hours a quarter? Really? Really? Read the release - it is utterly laughable. Especially as we're now in this period of parent-pushback. This is, in technical terms, fluff. At best, it is a scintilla of deference to parents for inclusion in the evidence folder David Baszucki will place meaningfully on the table in front of his microphone during the forthcoming congressional hearing (not scheduled yet, but it will come). So I am going to call it what it is: a load of bollocks. If they wanted to actually listen to parents, they could. If they wanted to prevent harm from happening through the platform, they could. Dave's worth $5Big ones, apparently. The interest alone could shore up the system. But no. The capitalist urge is just too strong. Nearly 60% of users are under 16. That ain't gonna change. Roblox knows it, the brands know it, I know it, you know it, the kids know it. So, if that is where we are, then take the responsibility you have seriously and do this properly. Roblox, you have the most significant responsibility that any children's media provider has ever had.
