Hazel Seabrook’s Post

It has been 2 months since the passing of the love of my life to complications from treatment of stage 4 prostate cancer. He was in every way way the epitome of healthy living. He never smoked, he never touched alcohol, ate a healthy diet and exercised regularly, but it was not enough. The combo of radiation and chemo that were successful in putting him in remission caused severe pneumonitis that within the space of two harrowing weeks killed him. The hole in my heart may never heal but I have learned a lot during this journey. As a clinical performance specialist and a life long nurse, I know what great is. I can honestly say that the medical and nursing staff at Mountain View Rrgional in Las Cruces gave him great care and were some of the most compassionate people I have come across. They tried everything , but eventually we had to let him go. For everyone in healthcare, never think for a moment that what you do doesn’t matter. From a touch, a kind word, forcing that person at the bedside to try and sleep, to eat , it makes a difference. I will be forever grateful for how they helped me in a time of great personal suffering. This is what great doctors and nurses do. It’s not just the science but also learning that compassion, support and honesty is critical. Thank you to all the health care professionals out there doing what you do every day!

Oh Hazel, I’m so sorry to hear this. My heart goes out to you. I can only imagine the pain of losing someone so dear. Even in the midst of your grief, your gratitude and compassion shine through. I hope the love you shared and the memories you hold close offer you some comfort in the hard moments. Take care of yourself.
